BEREA, Ohio - Andrew Hawkins is one of the smallest players on the Browns roster, but hes made one of the biggest impressions so far this season.Through Clevelands first three games, the 5-foot-7, 180-pound Hawkins leads the team in receiving with 21 catches for 244 yards. Its early still, we still have a lot of work to do, but Im very blessed, Hawkins said Thursday as he and his teammates were packing up to enjoy their bye week. The Browns signed the 28-year-old Hawkins to an offer sheet in March, and when the Bengals chose not to exercise first-refusal rights on the restricted free agent, Cleveland landed the receiver, who actually began his career with the Browns as a tryout player at the teams 2008 rookie minicamp.Hawkins also spent two years (2009-10) in the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes and current Bears coach Marc Trestman, along with appearing on Michael Irvins reality TV show, 4th and Long, in 2009.Coming from where I came from, being on the couch praying just for an opportunity to be on the practice squad, and that taking years to get accomplished, Hawkins said. Im always in awe, just being in this situation, I always have to pinch myself because theres times I didnt think this would be possible. So far, hes certainly taking advantage of the situation. Hawkins has developed chemistry on the field with quarterback Brian Hoyer, as he is averaging seven catches a game. And while he has naturally played a lot of the slot position in his four years in the NFL, the Browns have him lining up all over the place, including the outside. His ability to beat man-to-man coverage, thats all it takes to play on the outside, wide receivers coach Mike McDaniel said. He has the speed to do that. I wouldnt say its surprised me. Hes lived up to my expectations since hes been in-house.Hawkins does display a surprising amount of physicality for a player of his size.Hell give you everything he has, McDaniel said. Im sure if you asked DBs that hes played against, you go through warmups and you see a smaller stature. Youre just not expecting that feistiness. He is a football player.Hes not just a slot, skill, finesse player. Hes played defence. Hes played offence. Hes not afraid of the physicality and will do whatever it takes to make both him and his team successful.Hawkins surprising start has been exactly what the Browns were hoping for, as they have had to contend with the suspension of Josh Gordon. Though he has enjoyed a featured role in Gordons absence, Hawkins is looking forward to having the leagues leading receiver from last season back on the field with him.Josh is an incredible receiver, one of the best receivers in this league, Hawkins said. If I had my choice, hed be here with me right now. Hes that much of a difference-maker. Honestly, I cant wait to have Josh back, thats all I know.Three games is a small sample size for anyone, Hawkins knows that. But hell be doing everything he can to try and sustain his success as the season continues. All I kind of focus on is myself, and what I can control, Hawkins said. I feel like its my duty to give everything I have. I think its just a matter of kind of my journey to get here. It was a very tough road and I dont take anything for granted.NOTES: Coach Mike Pettine had a message for his players before the team went into the bye week. They represent not just themselves, but their families and the Cleveland Browns when theyre out of the building. I just keep stressing it to them. Surround yourself with good people. Make good choices. Its a good group, and I think that the time off will be well spent. . Matt Moulsons goal at 2:15 of overtime gave the Wild a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night. The Wild trailed 2-0 after the first period despite outplaying the Red Wings and outshooting them 12-6. "I was really impressed at the way they were able to stick with it," Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said. "Obviously, theres a tendency to get frustrated and go away from our game. But they stuck with it. Moulson tipped in a pass from defenceman Jonas Brodin — who was along the right wing boards — for Moulsons 21st goal and the game winner. "He (Brodin) showed great patience. He kind of looked over and made eye contact with me," Moulson said. "I went to the net. He couldnt have put it in a better place." The Wild lost to the Red Wings 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in St. Paul. Both teams are in the seventh playoff spot in tight races their respective conferences. Charlie Coyle had a goal and an assist and Jason Pominville and Zach Parise also scored for Minnesota. Mikko Koivu had two assists and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 13 shots. "It was frustrating being down 2-0 and how good we were playing," Parise said. "But we thought we were doing some really good things." Gustav Nyquist scored twice to extend his goal-scoring streak to five games, and Tomas Tatar also scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 21 saves. "I dont think we were skating toward the middle and putting pressure on their D," Nyquist said. "They could break out pretty fast I thought. So that was an issue, which is whhy we didnt get enough zone time in their zone.dddddddddddd We werent skating good enough, I thought." Tatar tied it 3-3 with 8:17 remaining in the third with a shot from the right circle off the rush. It was his 16th goal. Coyles goal 4:33 into the third period tied the game at 2. He pushed the puck into an empty net off a goal-mouth scramble. It was Coyles ninth goal of the season and second in two games. Parise gave the Wild the lead just 1:45 later when he poked one past Howard for his 24th goal. Pominvilles power-play goal with 8:03 left in the second period put Minnesota on the scoreboard and made it 2-1. His 27th goal of the season came on a one-time slap shot from the high slot area. The goal was scored only 10 seconds after Red Wings defenceman Kyle Quincey went off for interference. Detroits Daniel Alfredsson hit the post with 8:30 left in the second period. Nyquist scored twice in the first period to give Detroit its 2-0 lead. His first goal came on the power play with 6:15 left in the opening period. He put in a rebound from the left circle. His second, and 23rd of the season, was the result of a breakaway. He made a move and slid a backhand shot past Bryzgalov. It was Nyquists seventh goal in five games. He has a NHL-leading 18 goal since Jan. 20. NOTE: Detroit C Joakim Andersson returned after missing six games with a broken foot. ... TORONTO -- Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko calls it a revolution and the MLS team is rolling out the big guns. Former league MVP Dwayne De Rosario came back on board Thursday and England striker Jermain Defoe is to be unveiled Monday. It looks like the Spurs star will be joined by U.S. international midfielder Michael Bradley. While Toronto FC officials twisted their tongue into knots Thursday trying not to say anything about Bradley when asked, AS Roma issued a release later in the day saying the American had been sold to Major League Soccer for US$10 million. A source with knowledge of the league subsequently confirmed that the Bradley move to the MLS had passed another significant hurdle. The source also said Toronto FC was the MLS club pursuing him. It represents a remarkable shopping spree, one that should jolt life into both Toronto FC while further adding lustre to Major League Soccer itself. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment is shelling out millions to turn what has been the MLS doormat for seven years into a world force. A club official rejected reports that the combined bill for Defoe and Bradley is C$100 million including wages and transfer fees, but the real number probably isnt that far south. Like any other sport, the big boys of soccer come with big price tags. And MLS teams may have to overpay to overcome European snobbery. For a team yet to make the MLS playoffs, Toronto ownership is thinking big -- well beyond mere post-season play, according to Bezbatchenko. "We want to be internationally recognized as a top club," he said after welcoming De Rosario back at a packed news conference at BMO Field "We want to be competing internationally ... Theres a certain type of player you need to achieve those (goals)." Defoe, 31, and Bradley, 26, will do nicely. The 35-year-old De Rosario, a Toronto native who left the club in 2011 after a contract dispute, adds experience, class and local appeal. Up until now, the only thing world-class about Toronto FC has been its training centre -- a C$20-million-plus complex that probably rivals all but the top clubs in Europe. Poor results have led to management and player turnover which have led to poor results which have led to management and player turnover. MLSE president and CEO Tim Leiweke, who helped bring David Beckham to MLS, is not one for half-measures and, with the backing of the MLSE board, has opened up the vault for Bezbatchenko and manager Ryan Nelsen. The team has a vision -- and buckets of cash to back it up. "In all honesty it wasnt a really hard sell when you just tell them where were going to go," Nelsen said in describing his sales job to De Rosario. Unfortunately for De Rosario, under the MLS salary cap rules, only a few get to cash in. De Rosario, who ranks sixth on the all-time MLS scoring list with 103 goals, made US$654,300 in 2013. He will undoubtedly earn less in Toronto, but said his return to Toronto is about more than money. "For me right now its about winning ... You cant put a price on that," he said. Its a comment that speaks volumes about todays De Rosario, who once was all about the numbers on his paycheque. Remember the 2010 goal celebration that saw him pretend to sign a cheque, by way of showcasing his financial discontent in Toronto. Once seemingly more concerned about the De Rosario brand than anything else, the veteran midfielder has changed his stripes in recent years. With the national team, he has worn the captains armband and, at a Canada training camp in Arizona in early 2013, went out of his way to connect with younger players. The new galaxy of TFC stars will probably have to build bridges with their lesser-paid teammates. Fullback Ryan Richter, for example, made US$34,125 last season while several others made US$46,500. MLS is a league of have- and have-nots. Most Toronto players will be more acquainted with a Metropass than a Porsche. Jordan Hamilton isnt complaining, however. Toronto FC also announced the signing of the 17-year-old academy product Thursday. "A dream, come true," said the young forward. A dream that may include training next to Defoe. "To be practising alongside Defoe, what more could a 17-year-old ask for," Hamilton said with amazement. While MLSE is spending big, Nelsen says the teams salary cap is actually in better shape that the bottom line bloated with bad contracts that he inherited last season. As he noted, designated players may cost millions but their salary cap hit is US$390,000 The arrival of Defoe and Bradley as designated players, along with Gilberto and incumbent midfielder Matias Laba means that Toronto has four DPs -- one over the limit. Laba is the odd man out, with Nelsen only saying at this stage that there are contingency plans. As Nelsen points out, the MLSE board has dug deep into its pockets because it believes this is smart spending. In the short term, improvements are needed to retain and build on the 14,600 season-ticket base. With an average attendance of 18,131, the franchise ranked 10th in the league. MLSE will have looked longingly at Seattles league-leading average of 44,038. But MLSE also wants to overhaul and expand BMO Field, likely pouring in C$100 million-plus to add a roof and refit the bare-bones stadium to allow for football and other events. The 22,00-seat capacity BMO was built on a $62-million shoestring, probably less than what Defoe and Bradley will cost. Leiweke mused recently about Toronto hosting an NHL Winter Classic, likely timed with the Maple Leafs 100th anniversary season in 2016-17. A revamped BMO could also host outdoor music festivals, which were another string to the MLSE bosss bow when he ran the Anschutz Entertainment Group. AEG is the second-largest music promoter in the world (behind Live Nation), staging tours by Justin Bieber, Bon Jovi, Prince and Taylor Swift and running events like the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and Stagecoach Festival. Leiweke, a music fan who has attended Coachella, already has a big-name local music buddy in Drake, MLSEs global ambassador who helped sell Toronto to Defoe. De Rosario, Defoe and Bradley will sell tickets -- and more than a few jerseys. Defoe is a charismatic striker with an eye for goal, although one club official mused that recently signed Brazilian striker Gilberto may score more goals this season. In return for a huge investment, the compact East Londoner offers Toronto FC respectability (55 caps for England) as well as scoring chops (more than 200 goals in all competitions). He will also serve as a club ambassador, charming and entertaining off the pitch. Bradley will run the midfield. Add Brazilian midfielder Jackson and U.S. international fullback Justin Morrow to the young roster that remains from a six-win 2013 season and Toronto FC promises to be interesting watching when the season opens March 15 in Seattle. For the league, its compelling evidence that the North American league is a legitimate soccer destination. "We want to be leading the way," Bezbatchenko said. "The transformation this club has undergone the past three months is indicative of where were headed and what we want to do with player signings," he continued. "We want to be top-class in the league, in every way." While some fans -- following Leiwekes Leaf dreams -- may be planning the TFC parade route, his braintrust knows there is more work to be done in turning around a squad that went 6-17-11 last season. Exhibit 1 is the Toronto Blue Jays, whose shopping spree produced little more than disappointment last year. Nelsen knows an expensive bill does not necessarily make for a fine meal. "Look, were improved as a team. Everybody can see that. Were better. Were going get better. Are we the finished product? No, not at all ... Weve got a lot of work to do." He welcomed the pressure to win. "Love it, everybody loves it," he said. "Players want that, everybody want that, the coaches want that." Improvement will be an ever-present mantra, he added. Bezbatchenko, meanwhile, was not about to puncture the fans balloon. "Let them have their fun. Lets let our fans enjoy the moment because we are making trades, we are signing Dwayne, Gilberto. Were signing some really exciting players. "So let them have their moment because its going to be a fun ride." De Rosario clearly adds some class to the journey. He took time out during his moment at the microphone to note that Canadian national team coach Benito Floro was in attendance. As with the national team, he will also help mentor a young roster. Twenty of the 26 players on TFCs current roster are 25 or younger. Toronto selected De Rosario in Stage 2 of the MLS re-entry draft last month after D.C. United opted not to pick up his option at the end of the season. Nelsen called him a "legend" of Canadian soccer but said De Rosario would have to adapt his game to the demands of the team and his body. "All the great players redefine their roles on the field, in their training schedules, everything on and off the field. When you get to a certain age," said the 36-year-old Nelsen, speaking from experience De Rosario, who turns 36 in May, isnt taking any steps back, however. "Im a goal-scorer, Im a winner ... Im here to win, Im not just here to be the local kid coming back." When a reporter suggested he was in the "latter stages" of his career, De Rosario politely disagreed and said the competitive juices are still flowing. But the 13-year MLS veteran did say Toronto would be the last stop on his playing career. All it took was "a simple phone call," albeit not one De Rosario ever expected after his earlier disagreements with the franchise. He admitted it helped that the previous regime had all left. NOTES -- Nelsen confirmed that English fullback Richard Eckersley will not be coming back due to his hefty contract. Striker Robert Earnshaw has yet to respond to a contract offer, but Nelsen believes that the Welsh international will move on in a bid to get playing time. The manager also said other clubs are interested in U.S. forward Bright Dike and, while he would like to keep him, he will have to listen to any good offers. Dave Casper Jersey . ROTTERDAM, Netherlands -- Top-seeded Juan Martin del Potro and number two Andy Murray both crashed out at the ABN Amro Friday, leaving Tomas Berdych as the only seeded player to reach the semifinals. Ernests Gulbis of Latvia upset defending champion Del Potro 6-3, 6-4. . The Argentine is recovering from a wrist injury and it wasnt clear whether it may have been bothering him. He took a medical time-out after the first set, but decided to continue. However, his service appeared to suffer: in the first set, he served five aces to Gulbis six. In the second, Gulbis had six more while Del Potro had none. "Its nice to have beaten the defending champion, but actually it doesnt matter to me who won last year or 10 years ago," Gulbis said. "Im through to the semifinals, and thats the most important." Cilic beat Murray 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 11 minutes, making it look easy in what was his second win over the Scottish Wimbledon champion in their 11 meetings. After Murray failed to hold serve in the fifth game of the second set, he had four chances to break back in the sixth -- but failed to capitalize. Third-seeded Czech Berdych survived a difficult first set, including a tiebreak in which he had five set points. He regrouped and went on to win 6-7 (9), 6-2, 6-4 against Jerzy Janowicz of Poland. Berdych and Gulbis will meet in one semifinal. Using a suspicious substance for a better hold of the baseball on cool days is not such a sticky situation. Whether its the Yankees Michael Pineda with a mysterious brown goo on his hand, Bostons Jon Lester with a green smudge in his glove or Houstons Josh Zeid spraying something on his forearm before entering a recent game, most major leaguers dont care whether pitchers get a little help -- even though its against the Official Baseball Rules. To some, its preferable. "Its an unwritten rule in the game. Im sure a lot of pitchers do it," Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino said Friday before Boston played the Yankees. "As a hitter, do what you got to do from letting that ball go astray and hitting me in the head. Im fine with that." Ever since pitchers started throwing to batters in the 1800s, theyve looked for an edge -- and it has continued long after doctoring the baseball was banned in 1920. Television cameras caught Pineda with what looked like sticky pine tar on his hand early in the Yankees 4-1 victory over Boston on a cool Thursday night, when the ball could be slick. Red Sox manager John Farrell didnt see a photograph of Pinedas hand until the fourth inning. By the time Pineda came out to warm up for the fifth, his hand was clean and Farrell didnt complain to umpires. "In conditions like last night, its not uncommon for pitchers to try and get a grip in some way," Farrell said. "Were more focused on what we need to do offensively to kind of get going rather than taking anything away from his abilities." Joe Torre, Major League Baseballs executive vice-president of baseball operations, said in a statement Friday that Pineda would not be suspended. "The umpires did not observe an application of a foreign substance during the game and the issue was not raised by the Red Sox," Torre said. "Given those circumstances, there are no plans to issue a suspension, but we intend to talk to the Yankees regarding what occurred." Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman spoke with Torre and said the issue was resolved. Pineda said hadnt spoken with any Yankees management as of early afternoon. Perhaps Farrell didnt say anything because his pitcheers have been accused of using something extra.ddddddddddddToronto Blue Jays broadcasters last season thought they caught Clay Buchholz -- who faced Pineda Thursday -- using an illegal substance. During the 2013 World Series opener, Lester was seen on TV with something in his glove. Yankees manager Joe Girardi has never questioned his own pitchers, but he knows what goes on. "I dont talk to pitchers about that: Do you use or dont you use? This is not a recreational drug. I dont talk to people about that," Girardi said. "Im aware. Ive been on teams where Ive seen it. Im 99 per cent sure that I know of other guys on other teams that use it." Rule 8.02 says a pitcher may not apply a "foreign substance" to the ball, and section B of the rule says a pitcher may not have any "foreign substance" in his possession on the mound. The penalty if caught is automatic ejection and suspension. The rule has been applied, perhaps most famously when Twins pitcher Joe Niekro was caught with an emery board and sandpaper in the back pocket of his uniform pants in 1987. He was banned for 10 days. But Victorino agreed, doctoring the ball this way is different than improving ones grip. Dodgers reliever Jay Howell was suspended three days (later reduced to two) for pine tar on his glove in Game 3 of the 1988 NL championship series. For a player to be ejected, he has to be caught. Umpires are obligated to take action if they see a violation or if one is reported to them. Not so easily done. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Victorino each said they have never gone up to the plate and noticed whether a pitcher had something on his hand or uniform. But as camera resolution increases, spotlight has increased on all players. Unlike golf, which has a self-policing policy that allows fans watching at home to point out rules violations, theres no such mechanism in baseball. Challenging the use of an illegal substance is not among the reviewable plays under MLBs new replay system. Baseball executives plan to examine the rules and make changes for 2015, perhaps a path that would allow for a change. For most, though, the problem for Pineda was he was too blatant. Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - John Wall and the Washington Wizards added to the Miami Heats early season misery at home. Wall had 20 points and 10 assists as the Wizards defeated the Heat 105-103 on Friday night. Dwyane Wade knocked down a straightaway 3-pointer off an inbounds pass with 16.7 seconds left to claw Miami within 101-100. Bradley Beal sunk a pair of free throws at the other end and then came up with the game-clinching steal. The Wizards double-teamed Wade right as he crossed the halfcourt line and Beal came up with the swipe before hitting two more free throws to seal the outcome with 3.8 ticks left. Just shows our resilience not to quit, said Wall. In the fourth quarter, we got stops and worked out way back in the game. The Heat lost their fifth straight at home for the first time since March of 2008 and have dropped eight of their last nine in South Beach overall. Its tough to lose, Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. It really came down to them making plays. Nene posted 20 points and six rebounds, while Beal added 16 points and seven boards for the Wizards, who have won six in a row. Wade finished with 28 points and eight assists for Miami, which fell to 4-9 at home on the year. The Heat had lost just 13 games over the last two years at American Airlines Arena coming into the season. Miami was without Chris Bosh for a fourth straight game due to a calf injury. Wall netted half of his point total in the fourth quarter. His up-and-under reverse spun out, but Paul Pierce was there to tip it home and stake the Wizards to a 97-95 advantage with 1:32 to play. Wall then hit a pull-up jumper from the top of the key on Washingtons next trip up the floor to put it up four. Wade got his floater to drop at the other end before Wall split a pair of foul shots to make it 100-97 with 33.8 ticks on the clock. Wade was unable to get his ensuing shot to go, however, and Wall again made 1-of-2 from the stripe to extend the visitors lead to four. Earlier, Wall nailed a step-back jumper at the first-quarter buzzer to give Washington a 29-25 lead going into the second. Mario Chalmers put in the final five points of a 9-2 Heat run during the middle stages of the second, including a triple to cap it and tie the game at 47-47 with 4:53 to go in the period. Miami, which shot a season-best 64.7 percent (22-of-34) in the first half, took a 55-54 edge into the locker room. The Heat were up 79-76 after three. Game Notes Washington had lost 43 of its past 52 games in Miami, including the postseason, coming into Friday ... There were 18 lead changes and six ties in the game ... The Wizards tallied 18 points off 16 Heat turnovers ... Washington is 13 games over .500 (19-6) for the first time since the 1978-79 season. Mark Borowiecki Senators Jersey . It had been a while since he started a game for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and his return came against Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the potent Pittsburgh Penguins. "Maybe there was some circumstances surrounding the game, but honestly I didnt really pay much attention to them or think about them much," Reimer said. "It was just the Toronto Maple Leafs playing the Pittsburgh Penguins, and I was trying to get in the way of pucks." Reimer got in the way of a lot of pucks Saturday night as he was the backbone of the Leafs 4-1 victory over the Penguins at Air Canada Centre. The 26-year-old made 37 saves to give Nazem Kadri the chance to score the game winner, and many of his stops came when the majority of the action was in the Leafs zone. "You dont win in this league without goaltending that gives you a chance, and Reims gives us a chance," coach Randy Carlyle said. Reimer hadnt started since Oct. 17 when he left 32 seconds into Torontos game against the Carolina Hurricanes after a collision with winger Josh Leivo. The long layoff didnt bother him. "I felt normal right from the get-go," Reimer said. "I didnt feel any uneasiness or uncertainty, really. The puck dropped, and I was ready to stop it." Reimer gave up a power-play goal to Kris Letang, the Penguins defencemans first of the season, 6:52 in but shut the door from there. One of his more memorable saves came on Malkin a few minutes later, and Dave Bolland went right down the ice and tied it up for the Leafs shorthanded. But Reimer was really tested in the second period when the Penguins turned up the heat on him and outshot the Leafs 16-4. He made a couple of stops on two-on-one rushes, denied Crosby of a one-timer goal at the side of the net and flashed his glove against Matt DAgostini to the delight of many of the 19,539 fans in attendance. "I thought he was outstanding," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "There was flurries and pucks around his net he was strong on. ... He certainly was the difference in the second period." Had Reimer cracked even once, the Penguins mightve been able to ride some momentum and cruise past the Leafs. Instead, Toronto still had hope at the second intermission. "I think thats been the story of our season, for the most part," said James van Riemsdyk, who assisted on Kadris goal and Phil Kessels later in the third. "Theres been stretches where we get outshot, but our goaltending is making big saves for us. Theyve gave us a chance allmost every night.dddddddddddd Thats all you can ask for out of your goalies." All Reimer and Jonathan Bernier seemingly need is a little goal support. Reimer got it Saturday night in the form of a strong third period led by the new-look first line. Kadri replaced Tyler Bozak between van Riemsdyk and Kessel, and Carlyle said after the victory that Bozak would miss at least 7-10 days with a lower-body injury. Kadri beat Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury 1:26 into the third after smart passes from van Riemsdyk and Kessel but took more pride in stopping Malkins line. "Were all on the same page offensively. It was great," Kadri said. "Its not just the offensive side of things, we took care of the D-zone. We were able to shut down a few of their key players." Bolland, David Clarkson and Mason Raymond also did a good job against Crosby, Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz. Malkin finished the night with a minus-3 rating, while Crosby was a minus-2. As much credit as captain Dion Phaneuf and those forwards got for their defensive play, it eventually came down to Reimer, who didnt fold under a lot of pressure. "James played great. Both tenders all season have been unbelievable," Clarkson said. "Its always good when you can have that confidence in your goaltending. No matter who goes in net there we have confidence that if were getting outshot or outplayed, then we know what we can do." Reimer frustrated the Penguins all night and improved to 4-0-2 in his career against Pittsburgh. But he wasnt crowing about that success. "They have arguably the best players in the world, and they bring it every time they come and play," Reimer said. "Im just lucky enough to have teammates step up and play big games. I dont know if it has much to do with me more than the guys in front of me working their butts off. Again tonight I thought they worked as hard as they could, and they really earned it." Follow Stephen Whyno on Twitter at (at)SWhyno NOTES -- A CT scan revealed Leafs winger Joffrey Lupul did not have a fracture in his right foot and he will travel with the team on their Western Canadian road trip, according to Carlyle. The team hopes Lupul, who has missed two games after taking a shot off the foot in practice Thursday, will be able to play Tuesday at the Edmonton Oilers. ... Penguins defenceman Rob Scuderi left the game with a lower-body injury late in the first period after taking a hit from Clarkson along the boards. Bylsma did not have an update, saying only that Scuderi would be re-evaluated Sunday. ' ' '

BALTIMORE -- Orioles slugger Chris Davis will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique, a development that came as a disappointing surprise to the first baseman after he expressed confidence he would soon return from the injury. Davis left Friday nights game against Kansas City after four innings. He received an MRI on Saturday, and the results indicated that rest would be the best course of action. "A little bit worse than what we thought it was going to be," Davis said Saturday night. "Its kind of crazy because I dont feel terrible. Ive never had anything like this before. I figured it would just be a few days and then wed forget about it." Davis led the majors last season with 53 home runs and 138 RBIs. He has only two homers this season, and it will be a while before he gets to add to that total. "I guess the DL is the best choice right now," he said. "Hopefully things will go well and Ill be able to bounce back quickly." Earlier in the day, Davis expressed confidence that he wouldnt miss more than a few games. "Its definitely disappointing, frustrating," he said. "I do a lot to try and take care of my body and prevent injuries. You play this game long enough eventually youre going to run into something like this. But Im going to stay positive." It is uncertain when the injury occurred, although Davis suspected the muscles in his left side might have been weakened when he dived for groundballs in Boston and Toronto before the Orioles returned home to face the Royals. On Friday night, Davis winced after hitting a flyball in the third inning. He played another inning before manager Buck Showalter removed him from the game. Now, it appears as if Showalter will have to adjust to being without Davis for at least the next two weeks. "Its something we think will take the DL period at a minimum, so well start with that (Sunday)," the manager said. Right fielder Nick Markakis was in the starting lineup at first base Saturday night. Before batting practice, three Baltimore coaches worked with Markakis at the position, going over throws and positioning. The Orioles recalled infielder Jemile Weeks from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday to provide an extra bat after optioning reliever T.J. McFarland to Norfolk late Friday night. Utility infielder Ryan Flaherty also is expected to get time at first base. Flaherty has been playing third base while the Orioles wait for Manny Machado to come off the disabled list following off-season knee surgery. Asked if subbing for Davis, an All-Star last season, will be imposing, Flaherty replied, "I got stuck trying to do that for Manny the first couple weeks." Machado could play in Class A Frederick or Norfolk on Monday. It appears the Minnesota series on May 2-4 could be the most likely time for him to return to the Orioles, Showalter confirmed. A knee to the thigh might have stung him the most, but his sixth straight double-double made up for the brief burst of pain. Love had 33 points and 15 rebounds, Nikola Pekovic added 19 points and 11 boards, and the Minnesota Timberwolves climbed back to .500 by routing the Milwaukee Bucks 117-95 on Saturday night. "Ill be good to go. Once they called a timeout and worked on it, it was fine," Love said. Good thing for Minnesota (15-15), which won its second straight game behind another stellar outing from Love. "He wakes up getting double-doubles," said teammate Kevin Martin, who had 20 points. Love hit four of Minnesotas 11 3-pointers and the Timberwolves pulled away with a 14-0 run to start the second half. Perimeter defence was once again a huge problem for the Bucks, who have allowed opponents to hit at least 10 3s in seven consecutive games. Khris Middleton scored 23 points on 10-of-20 shooting for the Bucks, who fell to an NBA-worst 6-24. Larry Sanders had nine points and 10 rebounds in 33 minutes, his first start since missing seven weeks following right thumb surgery. "We were just kind of deflated. We didnt get our momentum back," Sanders said. "We got a little in the first half, lost it for a second, and just never got it back. Thats the story of the game." Minnesota had an easy time snapping a three-game losing streak away from home. Martin smiled after his shot from the wing bounced on the rim a couple of times before falling through the net for a 24-point lead with 4:32 left in the third quarter. The Timberwolves led by as many as 31 before the Bucks mounted a late charge. It was nerve-racking enough that coach Rick Adelman put Love back on the floor late to ensure the Bucks didnt complete an improbable comeback. If there was anything for Adelman to worry about from this blowout heading into a three-game stretch at home, it was the pllay of his bench late.dddddddddddd "When they go in, no matter what the score is, they have to play like the game is on the line," he said. If only Milwaukee could have contained Minnesota from the perimeter. The Timberwolves, the leagues third-highest scoring team (106.1 points per game) shot 45 per cent from 3-point territory after hitting at a 33 per cent clip for the season. A nine-point halftime lead climbed to double digits following a 14-0 run to start the third quarter. Corey Brewer (12 points) got the fun started by freezing rookie Giannis Antetokounmpo on the perimeter and hitting an 18-footer. Martin hit a 3 from the wing to make it 73-55 with 9:33 left after getting a pass from Brewer. Martin was so open that Brewer raised both arms in the air in celebration as he backpedaled on defence before the ball floated through the net. Halfcourt defence and ball movement sparked the Timberwolves, while Bucks coach Larry Drew said his team got broken down off the dribble and beaten on back cuts. "We got caught a couple of times staring at the ball and they just back-cut us," Drew said. "Nothing we werent ready for, we just didnt get the job done." O.J. Mayos 3 with 7:26 left finally ended the slide, but the offensively challenged Bucks were still saddled with a 20-point deficit. Leone was pulled after he gave up a leadoff homer to David Freese. Charlie Furbush got three outs for his first save in four major league seasons. Howie Kendrick legged out a leadoff double in the Angels ninth after his line drive ticked off the glove of shortstop Brad Miller and into short left field. But Brandon Maurer struck out Freese and retired Efren Navarro on a popup before Chris Iannetta struck out for the fourth straight time. Five-time All-Star Felix Hernandez yielded an unearned run and just two hits in seven innings with nine strikeouts and four walks. This was the 12th consecutive start in which the 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner threw at least seven innings and allowed two runs or fewer. The Angels only hit against Hernandez through the first six innings was a leadoff double to left-centre in the fourth by All-Star MVP Mike Trout. The right-hander, who started for the AL in the All-Star game, took a 1-0 lead into the seventh and walked Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton with none out before giving up the tying run. Miller made a diving stop of Kendricks single behind second base and threw wildly past first base, allowing Pujols to score. Hernandez minimized the damage by fanning Iannetta with runners at second and third. Iannetta is 2 for 20 lifetime against Hernandez. Garrett Richards, who came in with the same 11-2 record as Hernandez, allowed a run and three hits in eight innings and struck out seven. LOS ANGELES - To say Dwane Caseys future was up in the air a year ago at this time would be an understatement. In his third season at the helm of the Raptors, and the final on his contract, Caseys Raptors would fall to 6-10 on the first night of December, their third loss in a series of five straight defeats. They werent good enough to justify Masai Ujiris patience but they werent quite bad enough to be considered a serious contender in the Andrew Wiggins sweepstakes. Ujiri insisted he would give the players and coach he had inherited the chance to sink or swim, but something had to give, and it was about to. Rudy Gay was a week away from being traded. Kyle Lowry was on the block. And the coach? Its reasonable to assume he was on the hot seat. But one thing weve learned about Casey since he took over ahead of the lockout shortened 2011-12 campaign: hes unflappable. He wasnt coaching for his job any more or any less than he was the year prior, or than he is now that he is locked up for another three seasons. Hes also one of the more humble and personable men youll come across in this business of professional sport. He possesses the innate ability to relate and get through to just about anyone, an essential cog in last years remarkable turnaround followed by an even more impressive first month to the new season. On the heels of a franchise-best 13-4 start, good for the best record in the conference, Casey has been named the Easts Coach of the Month, a well-deserved honour for the leader of a club that has managed their expectations, avoided complacency and continued to thrive for more despite their accomplishments a year ago. Casey last won the award following an 8-6 December last season, becoming the first Raptors bench boss to win Coach of the Month twice. If youre looking forward to his acceptance speech, a heads up, it will be brief and unassuming. I dont give a crap, he had said after winning the award last year. I mean, its not about me. Its about that team in there, in that locker room. Im going to be in coaching for a long time so its not about me, its about those guys. The 57-year-old Casey has always taken individual acknowledgement - either for himself or one of his players - as an indication that collectively everyone is doing their job the way theyre supposed to. DeMar DeRozan has blossomed into an All-Star. Lowry is on his way to doing the same this season. The locker room, as weve been reminded over the last 12 months, is one of the most harmonious around. Theyve put their egos aside in accepting roles, which for many of them require the occasional swallowing of pride. Then theres Casey, the conductor, driving the train, ensuring it doesnt stray and go off the rails. It could have, it still may, but it hasnt. Now, the Raptors head coach and his team face a new challenge with DeRozan sidelined indefinitely. Once again, Casey will be tasked with rearranging the pieces, placing his players in new and in some cases unfamiliar roles and maintaining a high level of performance in the process. Everybody is happy during good times, he said after Sundays loss to the Lakers, the first game without DeRozan. But weve lost a couple of games and now we will see what we are made of. We have to make a muscle, stay together and stay positive. Two games dont make a season. Weve had it pretty good here for a while but now we have to bounce back, regroup and reload. With a record of 118-129 since taking over in Toronto, Caseys winning percentage (.478) is the highest of any coach in team history. He recently passed Lenny Wilkens for second on the Raptors win list, approaching Sam Mitchell for top spot. He has brought stability and consistency, an air of calm since Bryan Colangelo poached him off Rick Carlisles staff in Dallas, just days after he helped lead the Mavericks to a championship. Carlisle, in town with the Mavs last week, remains one Caseys most loyal advocates. First of all I give [Colangelo] a lot of credit for hiring Dwane, Carlisle said in Toronto on Friday. There were a lot more established coaches that he passed on. He really targetted Dwane as a guy that he knew could take a group of younger guys, mould them and instill a defensive philosophy and a defensive disposition in how they played. The very first year the record wasnt great but the defensive numbers did a 180. From there they have built it up each year. Dwane has earned the right to have a team this good and he has done a great job of building it up to this point. FIFA had issued a warning to the NFF last week after the federation was served with court proceedings from the government that prevented the NFFs president from running the NFFs day-to-day affairs.NEW YORK – The Blue Jays entered Thursdays series finale at Yankee Stadium losers of eight of their last 11 games. Theyd dropped 15 in a row in the Bronx dating back to 2012 and had seen their lead over their pinstriped rivals in the American League East dwindle to two and a half games. This is a slump. Its lasted for about two weeks. The downturn comes on the heels of a terrific May, when Toronto won 21 of 30 games and Edwin Encarnacion captured the imagination of fans with his 16-home run month. This is not is the end of the world, nor does this slump suggest a long-term trend. This is on the offence and thats a good thing because theres too much talent in the Blue Jays lineup for the widespread malaise to continue. To wit: The starting pitching has been fine. You could say its been good and you wouldnt be wrong. In the last 11 games, Jays starters have allowed four or more earned runs only twice and have pitched to a staff ERA of 3.71. The starting pitching was supposed to be the weakness. So far it has held up. The Jays have hit only four home runs in their last 11 games. Not surprisingly, three of the home runs came in two of the three victories. Toronto continues to lead baseball with 93 team home runs, which is crucial to the clubs attack. Of the 338 runs the Jays have scored this season, 147 (43.4 per cent) have come via the long ball. Jose Bautista hasnt hit a home run in 11 games, his longest power drought of the season. Hes still hitting for a respectable average, .275 with five of his 11 hits going for doubles, but the Jays miss his power bat as the club struggles, having scored three or fewer runs eight times in the span. This is a phase, both for the individual and for the ballclub, Bautista said, that was bound to happen. "If you can execute every single day for 162, youd probably win 140 games," said Bautista. "We dont expect to execute every single day. But we do have to pick it up. Its one thing, were running into some St. Louis good pitching, soome other pitching staffs.dddddddddddd I dont want to speak badly or worse about the Yankees or the Orioles but its not the same. We faced much better pitching at home during the last homestand than we have on this road trip, except for Tanaka, who did a tremendous job. So we shouldve won some of these games that we lost." It hasnt helped, either, that Edwin Encarnacion has hit only one home run in the last 11 games. "Weve lacked some timely hitting," said Bautista. "Our pitching has been there enough, I think, that we shouldve won some of these games that weve lost. We just need to keep going on offence. We got really hot at one point and kind of hitting a little cold spurt now. Weve just got to overcome it and not get 10 hits a day but get them when you get the baserunners on." Bautista has repeatedly acknowledged hes bought in to hitting coach Kevin Seitzers philosophy of using all fields. The slugger has become a better all round hitter. His 1,000th career big league hit, achieved in the eighth inning of Wednesday nights loss, was a double to right field. That alone would have been a story last season. This year its commonplace. "I think Im more aware of some situations where people are going to keep challenging me inside, especially when Im behind in the count or theres the right situation when theres a defensive shift," said Bautista. "Why not try to go over there and it ended up working out again? But the previous at bat I tried going that way and I hit into a force out, when Melky got forced out at second. So it works sometimes, sometimes it doesnt." Its difficult to watch a team go into a funk, especially when it had become customary for fans to watch Toronto out-slug and, often, out-pitch opponents. Despite the recent struggles, the Jays offence remains top 10 in important statistical categories: Home runs – 93 (1st)On-base percentage - .329 (5th)On-base plus slugging percentage - .760 (2nd)Walks – 243 (9th) ' ' '

LONDON - English third-tier club Oldham is prepared to face a growing backlash by going ahead with plans to sign convicted rapist Ched Evans. While Oldham said it was conducting due diligence into hiring Evans, a sponsor severed ties with the northern club citing the imminent signing.Evans, a former Sheffield United and Manchester City striker, was released from jail in October after serving time for raping a 19-year-old woman in his hotel room in 2011. A plan to train with United fell through recently after protests from sponsors and celebrity fans. There are ongoing negotiations with regard to signing Ched Evans, Oldham director Barry Owen said Wednesday at the clubs Boundary Park stadium. Unfortunately, quite a lot of due diligence still needs to be completed. We are still in talks with the PFA (Professional Footballers Association) and other agencies ... and I dont anticipate that it is going to be done over the next few days.Oldham owner Simon Corney was quoted as saying that there was an 80 per cent chance of Evans joining. There might be a cost implication, but you have to stick to your principles, Corney told the website of the Jewish Chronicle newspaper. We werent surprised by the backlash. When Oldhams interest in the 26-year-old Evans emerged earlier this week, the club became the target of opposition from politicians and fans but has resisted external pressure to continue talks.Sponsor Verlin Rainwater Solutions, which makes gutters, announced that it did not want to be associated with a team featuring Evans in the squad. After receiving the news regarding the imminent signing of Ched Evans it is with great regret that Verlin Rainwater Solutions will no longer be associated with Oldham Athletic, company director Craig Verling said.We feel that Mr. Evans should be able to lead a life without further punishment after serving his sentence, although our feelings remain the same that this should not be within the public domain where his previous behaviour may influence the next generation.Another Oldham sponsor, stationery supplies firm ZenOffice, warned it would end its deal if Evans joined.___Rob Harris can be followed at www.twitter.com/RobHarris LeVeon Bell Youth Jersey . -- Kevin Stadler might be playing in the Masters for the first time, but hes already showing his old man a thing or two. HOUSTON -- Oakland rookie Matt McGloin was so good in a victory over the Houston Texans that it raised questions about whether Terrelle Pryor will get his job back when hes healthy. The undrafted free agent threw three touchdown passes in his first NFL start and the Raiders extended Houstons franchise-record skid to eight games with a 28-23 victory on Sunday in coach Gary Kubiaks return from a mini-stroke. Oakland coach Dennis Allen evaded the question when asked if McGloin would remain the starter when Pryor has recovered from a knee injury. "Listen, heres what Im going to do -- Im going to enjoy this win, all right," Allen said. "Were going to go back and well evaluate. But he definitely did a very good job today." McGloin was 18 of 32 for 197 yards. Houstons Case Keenum, also an undrafted free agent, was benched after Houstons offence stalled in the third quarter. McGloin threw touchdown passes of 5, 16 and 26 yards to help the Raiders score their most points of the season. "There is always more to prove and more to do," McGloin said. "I think I got off to a good start, but we will see." Kubiak wasnt on the sidelines, instead coaching upstairs from the booth on doctors orders two weeks after collapsing at halftime of Houstons game against Indianapolis. He benched Keenum for Matt Schaub with Houston trailing by 11 points. Houston cut the lead with two field goals in the fourth quarter and had a chance to take the lead late. But Schaubs pass to Andre Johnson on fourth down from the 8 was broken up in the end zone. Johnson and Schaub were yelling at each other on the field after the play and the screaming match continued on the sidelines, a clear indication of the frustration on a disappointing team that was supposed to contend for a Super Bowl. Johnson said the argument came because the receiver "messed up" and didnt finish the play. "We just exchanged some words," he said. "Its just heat of the moment. Once we came in the locker room, we talked about it, left it alone so Im not worried about that. Me and Matt have played a lot of football together." Schaub also brushed off their disagreement. "Its just emotions, emotions of the game, a culmination of a lot of things, but stuff well keep between us," Schaub said. Kubiak replaced Keenum with Schaub after Houstons first three drives of the second half all ended in puntss.dddddddddddd Schaub was terrible early this season and hadnt played since Oct. 13, after he was benched following an injury. Keenum threw for 170 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Schaub had 155 yards passing. Kubiak wouldnt say who would start next week. Houston punted on Schaubs first drive before settling for a 26-yard field goal on the second when the offence stalled after getting a first down at the 10. A 30-yard field goal cut the lead to 28-23 with about eight minutes remaining. Rashad Jennings, who was filling in for the injured Darren McFadden, extended Oaklands lead to 28-17 when he plowed over D.J. Swearinger and rumbled 80 yards for a touchdown with 2:26 left in the third quarter. It was the longest run of his career and he finished with 150 yards rushing. The Raiders regained the lead when Mychal Rivera grabbed a 26-yard touchdown reception to make it 21-17 in the third quarter. Keenum scrambled to escape the grasp of Lamarr Houston and launched a 42-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Graham to cut the lead to 14-7 early in the second quarter. Houston tied it at 14 when Keshawn Martin let a punt bounce off the grass and his chest before scooping it up and dashing 87 yards for a touchdown about three minutes before halftime. It was the longest punt return for a score in franchise history. Randy Bullock made his first field goal of 50 or more yards with a 51-yarder to give Houston a 17-14 lead just before halftime. Graham had the ball stripped by Charles Woodson and fumbled after a catch on Houstons first drive. Phillip Adams recovered it and 26 yards. McGloins first career touchdown came when he hit Denarius Moore on a 5-yard slant to put Oakland up 7-0. Houstons second miscue came when Keenum threw his first career interception as he was being hit by Stacy McGee. It broke a streak of 105 pass attempts without an interception for Keenum. The Raiders immediately took advantage of the error when McGloin connected with Rod Streater for a 16-yard touchdown on the next play to make it 14-0. NOTES: Former Presidents George W. METAIRIE, La. -- The NFL Players Association confirmed Wednesday that it filed a grievance on behalf of Jimmy Graham concerning the Saints tight ends franchise tag designation. At issue is whether the NFL was correct to apply the tight end tag to Graham or whether Graham should have received the more lucrative wide receiver tag, a difference of $5 million. The NFLs current collective bargaining agreement states that a player should be tagged according to the position at which he lined up most often. Graham and his agent, Jimmy Sexton, are contending that the frequency with which Graham lined up split out from the line merits the $12.3 million receivers franchise tag, not the $7 million tight end tag. No date for a grievance hearing has been set, but the filing alone could provide Graham with a measure of additional leverage as he seeks to have his franchise tag designation removed in favour of a long-term extension. July 15 is the final day a team can sign 2014 franchise players to long-term extensions. Grahams agent, Jimmy Sexton, did not return a message seeking comment on the matter. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Wednesday there had been no progress to report on negotiations with Graham. The Saints have asserted that lining up split from the line is a significant part of every tight ends job description. When asked in January whether the Saints viewed Graham as a tight end under the leagues CBA, Loomis responded: "Isnt that what we drafted him as? Isnt that what he made the Pro Bowl as? Thats what we see him as -- a tight end. "The tight end has always been part of the passing game," Loomis continued. "Hes part of the running game. So hes part of both. So are receivers. So are running backs." According to an analysis by ESPN Stats and Information, Graham lined up split out from the line on 67 per cent of his snaps -- 45 per cent of the time in the slot and 22 per cent out wide. Unless the Saints and Graham pre-emptively agree on a long-term deal, an arbitrator may have to decide whether those numbers alone, under the language of the CBA, would require the league to apply the receiver designation to Graham. If so, it likely would set a precedent for negotiations involving other tight ends who figure prominently in their teams passing games, and could substantially lower the franchise tag number for tight ends who more often line up next to offensive tackles. It could also affect other positions in which players have varying roles, most notably some outside linebackers in a 3-4 defensive scheme, who could argue their right to receive the higher defensive end tag. For me, that time is now, Bailey said in a statement released by the Broncos, for whom he played from 2004-13.I have been truly blessed. I have been able to play this NFL game I love for 15 seasons and yet, it seems like only yesterday that my dreams came true when I received the call from Charley Casserly letting me know the Redskins had made me their first pick in the 1999 draft, Bailey said. The seventh overall pick that year, the University of Georgia star spent five seasons in Washington before the Broncos traded star running back Clinton Portis to the Redskins for the games premier shutdown cornerback.Bailey was the most decorated defender in franchise history with eight Pro Bowl berths while with the Broncos. When GM John Elway returned to his beloved franchise, his first order of business was signing Bailey to an extension.Champ was the pillar in this organization for a long, long time, Elway said. He brought great stability to the Broncos not only as a player but as a person through his ability and leadership. When I came here in 2011, he was the guy that we were going to build around and we were fortunate to have him for three more years to get this team back on track. He was a big part of that turnaround.Peyton Manning paid him the ultimate compliment, saying Bailey had unbelievable cover skills and unbelievable ball skills. He caught the ball like a wide receiver did. Going all the way back to my days playing against him in college, he was truly a great competitor with talent and work ethiic.dddddddddddd Thats what made Champ such an incredible player.Bailey took many a young cornerback under his wing, among them Chris Harris Jr, who tweeted, Blessed to be able to learn and play opposite Champ for 3 years, and added the hashtags HOF and TBE for the surefire Hall of Famer.Although quarterbacks usually avoided throwing in his direction, Bailey still found a way to get involved and make an impact. He had 52 interceptions, more than any active cornerback. He prided himself on his technique and tackling abilities. In 215 regular season games, Bailey had 983 tackles, three sacks, nine forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. The thing about Champ was he had great ability as a shutdown corner while also not being afraid to stick his nose in there and be a part of the run game, Elway said. He was a complete corner with tremendous toughness and ability to cover.About the only thing that eluded Bailey in his stellar career was a Super Bowl ring. The closest he came was the Broncos trip to the Meadowlands in February when they were blown out by Seattle. With a $10 million salary looming for this season, the Broncos released him in March after Bailey decided he wanted to give a 16th season a try. He later signed with the Saints, but the left foot injury that sidelined him for 11 games last season continued to bother him during training camp and for the first time in his life he didnt make the cut.His last NFL season was a bittersweet one, missing 11 games with the foot injury before returning to action down the stretch and finally getting to play in a Super Bowl, which proved both the apex and nadir of his career. He had a significant part to do with them getting there based on his play in the AFC championship, where he gave up one pass for 4 yards on one foot, said his agent, Jack Reale. He has a tremendous amount to be proud of and really tried to get it done last year when lesser players wouldnt have even tried. Its a safe bet Bailey will end up talking football now that hes done playing it.Media makes a lot of sense for a guy like him, Reale said.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Melendrez Stapleton on Twitter: http://twitter.com/arniestapleton ' ' '

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey can pitch the Toronto Blue Jays to a three-game series sweep over the Houston Astros Thursday in the finale of the midweek set at Rogers Centre. Its the eighth start of Dickeys career against the Astros, who touched him for five runs on seven hits in six innings of their last matchup in Toronto last season. Dickey did not get a decision in the game, which the Blue Jays won, 12-6. Hes split a pair of decisions in two starts against other opposition thus far in 2014, allowing six runs in a 9-2 loss at Tampa Bay and going 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a 4-0 defeat of the New York Yankees. Dickey won the National Leagues Cy Young Award with the New York Mets in 2012, then was acquired by the Blue Jays in the offseason and began 2013 with consecutive losses before ultimately turning things around and winning 14 of 27 decisions across 34 starts. Houston counters with lefty Dallas Keuchel, who took a 5-1 loss in his first appearance of the season on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings of the outing. Keuchel was very effective against Toronto in two meetings in 2013, getting a win and no-decision while allowing six runs and 14 hits in 14 1/3 innings. On Wednesday, Brett Lawrie stroked a two-run homer to help the Blue Jays to a 7-3 victory over the Astros. Melky Cabrera, Maicer Izturis, and Dioner Navarro each supplied two hits for the Blue Jays, who have won three of their last four. Brandon Morrow (1-1) allowed three runs on five hits with nine strikeouts in six innings to earn the win. Alex Presley hit a two-run homer and Jose Altuve tripled in Houstons third straight loss. Jets are now 4-1 in overtime. It was the first game since Paul Maurice took over behind the bench that the Jets allowed more than two goals. It was the 14th time the Jets have gone to extra time. The Jets have now won five of their last six. The Jets got the start they were looking for with a good forecheck by Blake Wheeler forcing a turnover that resulted in a goal by Mark Scheifele, his 10th of the year, the eighth Jet to get to double digits this season, the pass to Scheifele coming from Evander Kane. Kane has 14 points in his last 15 games. It was only the second time in the six games under Maurice that the Jets opened the scoring. The Jets then went on the power play and a pass from Jacob Trouba to Blake Wheeler who was in full flight down the left wing led to a goal, as Wheeler went five hole on James Reimer for his team-leading 19th of the year. At the other end of the ice Ondrej Pavelec made at least two outstanding saves, his best a glove save off Phil Kessel. Shots in the first were 12-11 in favour of Toronto. The power play goal by Wheeler was the Jets first in four games, after a 0-for-10 stretch over three games. The second period was a wild one. The Leafs got on the score sheet with a power play goal from Dion Phaneuf, but a power play goal by Bryan Little put the Jets back in front by two, his 17th of the year and fifth on the power play. Little redirected a slap pass from Toby Enstrom, with an assist to Dustin Byfuglien as well. It was the Jets second power play goal of the game, the sixth time this season the Jets scored two power play goals in a game. A screened shot from the blue line from Zach Bogosian made it 4-1 and chased Reimer in favour of Jonathan Bernier. For Bogosian, it was his second of the year from Little and Ladd as the Jets get two in 37 seconds. Troy Bodie got the Leafs to within two at 9:14 making it four goals in 3:01. The Jets then ran into penalty trouble and were two men short for just under a minute, but were successful on the penalty kill and are 7-for-7 on the season when down two men.dddddddddddd Tim Gleason with his first of the year at 16:44 made it a one-goal game, 4-3, after forty minutes. Shots in the second were 12-8 Jets. The third period settled down a bit and was not as wide open, although both Pavelec and Bernier still had to make some good saves. Phil Kessel tied the game with 1:33 left scoring his 27th of the year, sending the game to overtime and setting the stage for Dustin Byfuglien to beat Bernier glove side off the rush to end the game with his 12th goal of the year. Andrew Ladd and Michael Frolik drew assists, as Byfuglien was moved back to defence for overtime. Final shots were 32-28 Jets. Enstrom led the Jets in ice time at 26:03, followed by Trouba at 25:39 and Bogosian at 24:15. Devin Setoguchi had five shots on goal, he also led the team in hits with six. Little was the top face-off man at 57 per cent winning 12 of 21. After having his point streak stopped at five Thursday, Little had a goal and an assist in this game. Wheeler and Byfuglien also had two-point nights. It was Pavelecs eighth straight start – he has won five of his last six starts. “At times every functioning part of our game was good,” said Maurice in his post-game news conference. “There were some stretches where we werent great but theyve got a good team and theyre explosive. But an overtime win on a Saturday night against the Leafs, well take it and enjoy every inch of it. Emotions can get away on you in a game like this but I didnt see that from our group.” Coach Maurice felt this win is another confidence builder for the team. On Byfuglien going back to defence in overtime: “Its an unbelievable luxury for us. I always wanted to go three forwards and one D in overtime and just go, open it up, trade chances four on four. Having Byfuglien move back is a big benefit for us.” The Jets are in Chicago Sunday night for the final game of the season against the Hawks (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). The ‘Hawks have won all three prior meetings this season. Its the seventh back-to-back of the season (0-6), and ends a stretch of three games in four nights. ' ' '

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Brewers are ready for a difficult weekend against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Especially after a successful performance in the opener of the series between division leaders. Rickie Weeks hit a three-run homer and Gerardo Parra had two hits and two RBIs to lead Milwaukee to a 9-3 victory over Los Angeles on Friday night. "We know the pitching that we are going to face the next couple of nights," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "So, it was important to win this game." The Dodgers major league-best road record slipped to 36-24, but they will send Zack Greinke to the mound Saturday night and Clayton Kershaw on Sunday. Roenicke said that Brewers simply didnt quit, especially after falling behind and not having much success against Roberto Hernandez in his Dodgers debut. "Not only do we come back and tie it, and then get the lead, and then all of a sudden we get the big homer from Rickie," Roenicke said. "That opens it up." NL West-leading Los Angeles scored two runs in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead, but Milwaukee capitalized on two errors by reserve shortstop Justin Turner and scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning. "Actually, it was a pretty good game there until the seventh," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Then, we just defensively let our pitching down really. Really, it was our defence in general that let it down." Martin Maldonado tied it at 3 with a squeeze bunt that scored Weeks. He bunted the ball toward Brandon League (2-3), who tried to flip it with his glove to catcher Drew Butera, but was late. Pinch-hitter Khris Davis reached on Turners first error to load the bases. Carlos Gomez then reached on Turners throwing error that allowed Mark Reynolds to score. Parra followed with a two-run single that gave Milwaukee a 6-3 lead. "Unfortunate," Mattingly said of the fielding miscues. "Brandon comes in, really gets ground balls is what hes trying to do, what we asked him to do, and we just dont get what we want." Adrian Gonzalez homered in the sixth for the Dodgers, and then had a tying RBI single in the seventh. Andre Ethiers RBI single later that inning gave the Dodgers a 3-2 lead. Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez left the game in the first inning with tightness in his right side and was replaced by Miguel Rojas. Ramirez said he hurt himself in the batting cage before the game. During his at-bat in the first, Mattingly didnt like how Ramirez reacted and took him out. "One swing, it just tightened up on me," Ramirez said. "What he (Mattingly) did is smart. He dont want to make it worse." Turner pinch-hit in the seventh and then took over at shortstop in the bottom of the inning. Hernandez was traded by Philadelphia to the Dodgers on Thursday for two players to be named or cash considerations. He allowed two runs and three hits in six innings, throwing just 65 pitches. Jeremy Jeffress (1-1) picked up the win in relief. NL Central-leading Milwaukee went ahead 2-0 in the first inning on Aramis Ramirezs run-scoring single and Scooter Gennetts sacrifice fly. TRAINERS ROOM Dodgers: Ramirez walked on a 3-2 pitch from Kyle Lohse, and then didnt come out for the Brewers half of the inning. He is listed as day to day. ... Every night of the Stanley Cup playoffs, TSN hockey analyst and former NHL goaltender Jamie McLennan breaks down each goalies performance. Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins (5) – He was locked in all night, made huge stops on Benoit Pouliot, Raphael Diaz, Ryan Mcdonagh, Carl Hagelin, Rick Nash (twice) but none better than the three saves on Mats Zuccarello. Battled some rebounds around the net, but made up for it with great positioning and efficiency in the net. Got a little help with three posts but like any streak, you get the bounces that go your way. He looked very calm and not overactive in his movements. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (3) - No run support or help most of the night. The Sidney Crosby goal was a great hesitation - roll of wrist move that got him to open up and he slid it through the five- hole, - not Henriks best work. Has faced five breakaways in the last two games, the Rangers are giving up too many high quality chances to the Pens. Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings (5) - Unbelievable early on, big saves on the PK on Saku Koivu, Devante Smith-Pelly, Ryan Getzlaf and Patrick Maroon. Showed his agility again by his explosive movement in the second period on Perry, held it up in the 3rd, with good down low work again on Perry. Looks unbeatable some nights, and Anaheim tried to get to him with traffic, he fought through it all night. Jonas Hiller, Anaheim Ducks (3) - Beat glove side on the first two goals, one early on Marian Gaborik, and the Alec Martinez goal hits Jakob Silfverberg, but he moves out of the way of it. Good saves on Anze Kopitar, Gaborik,Mike Richards and Tanner Pearson. Not tested much in the third. Not the problem but has not been the solution for the Ducks as well. (SportsNetwork.com) - It will be an exercise in futility when the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans go at it Sunday at LP Field. The Giants have lost seven in a row to fall to 3-9 and the Titans are riding a six-game slide that has dropped them to 2-10. New York suffered through an eight-game slide from Nov. 7 - Dec. 26, 2004. It was head coach Tom Coughlins first season in the Big Apple and the Giants went 6-10 that year. This could be Coughlins last season in New York. Coughlin was obviously disappointed in last weekends 25-24 loss in Jacksonville, as the Jaguars rallied from a 21-0 deficit to stun the visiting Giants, who had only three points in the second half. Very disappointing, discouraging, Coughlin said. We came down here feeling like we could win ... and nothing happened on game day. The Giants lost all three fumbles and quarterback Eli Manning passed for 247 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. Manning fumbled late in the game when he was sacked by Jaguars defensive end Chris Clemons. Jacksonville scored twice on fumble returns. Manning didnt throw an interception for the first time since Nov. 3 versus Indianapolis and had been picked off seven times in the previous three games. Hes focused on Tennessee and getting the Giants back on track for the first time since Oct. 5 versus Atlanta. Coughlin got his message across to Manning and the team. He wants us to worry about Tennessee, getting a win, be able to enjoy, be happy about we are doing, and be able to celebrate as a team together, and celebrate a victory, Manning said. That is what we are going to do, we are going to focus on this week and take it one week at a time, and compete our tails off, and work hard, and that is all we can do, that is all we can control. The Giants have lost four in a row on the road and are 1-5 as the visitor. They need to clean up their act in the second half, having scored just 13 points over the last two quarters in the previous four games. The Jaguars had a 22-3 scoring advantage in the second half on Sunday. I dont have a reason, I dont have an explanation, Manning said. We have to be better, we have to be better in the second half of all these games. That is where games are won. It is usually going to come down to that third and fourth quarter, who plays football. That is where the situations of the game come. We are not making the plays; we are making mistakes, we are not making enough plays in that situation to win the games. New York has lost the last three games in which it led at the half. The 3-9 record is the worst after 12 games since 1995, when the G-men had an identical mark. The Titans havent won since Oct. 12 versus Jacksonville and will play two straight and three of their last four games in the Music City. They are only 1-4 at LP Field this season. Tennessee has given up 40 or more points (88 total) in each of the last two games and 20-plus points in the last five. In Sundays 45-21 demolition at the hands of the Houston Texans, the Titans allowed 457 total yards and Texans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick passed for 358 yards and six touchdowns. Houston had a 24-0 lead in the first half. Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins scorched Tennessee for 238 yards receiving and two scores on nine catches. Tennessees defense has been abysmal all season and is 18th in passing yards allowed (243.8), 30th in total yards (385.2) and last in rushing yards allowed (141.5) and points (28.2). Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt discussed what the players could do to improve over the last few weeks of the season, especially the younger players. Its an important part of the process, Whisenhunt said. Getting a chance to see them in games, if you just look at the quarterback, for example, weve got to see him before this game against three pretty good defenses in the league, three pretty good, established defenses. You get a good assessment of him on where he is and how hes going to handle that. Were getting to look at a lot of different guys in situations. Some of it because you want to look at young players, some of it because its an injury situation. It does give them an opportunity to show what they can do. Titans rookie QB Zach Mettenberger left Sundays game in the third quarter with a shoulder injury and suffered a Grade 1 AC sprain. Mettenberger, who passed for 184 yards with a touchdown and an interception, said he thinks he will be able to come back versus the Giants, while Whisenhunt will make the decision later in the week. According to Mettenberger, hes definitely playing this week and is experiencing some soreness. It?s only been three days since I injured it, so obviously theres soreness still, he said. I cant go out there and 100 percent rip a ball right now, but Im sure by the end of the week Ill be fine. Jake Locker, who was replaced by Mettenberger as the starter last month, completed 6-of-12 passes for 91 yards with a TD and two interceptions. The Titans and Giants have split the first 10 meetings between the teams, and Tennessee has prevailed in each of the past five, including a 29-10 victory on Sept. 26, 2010. Manning threw for 386 yards on 34-of-48 passing with no touchdowns and two interceptions. New York took the first five games in this series from 1973-1994. Mettenberger and Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. were teammates at LSU. Beckham was just named Offensive Rookie of the Month. Without a doubt, he is the best athlete I have ever been around personally, Mettenberger said of Beckham. Not just football, but basketball, baseball, soccer, he can do it all... I have seen him do it all. I am very proud of him and the work he has put in, and the success he is having on the field. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Manning has thrown for five touchdowns and no interceptions in his last three games against AFC opponents. Protection has been an issue for Manning, who was sacked four times against the Jaguars. The Giants have allowed 21 sacks during the seven-game slide after giving up only seven in the first five games. Perhaps that will change with the pending return of right tackle Justin Pugh. He has missed the last two games with a quadriceps injury. The Giants made some moves this week and placed offensive linemen Geoff Schwartz and Adam Snyder, defensive linemen Mathias Kiwanuka and Robert Ayers, and linebacker Terrell Manning on injured reserve. Coughlin commented on New Yorks laundry list of injuries. The message is keep fighting; thats what the message has been all along...The other message is opportunity. Giants running back Rashad Jennings posted 91 yards and two TDs on 26 rushes last week, while rookie Andre Williams leads all first-year NFC players with five rushing touchdowns. Jennings and Williams should see enough action against Tennessees shoddy run defense, the worst in the NFL. Jennings is bothered by an ankle issue that is not deemed serious. The Giants have struggled against the rush this season, allowing 140.6 yards per game. Titans rookie Bishop Sankey leads the team with only 474 yards and posted 42 on 10 carries last week. Sankey has yet to hit the 100-yard mark in a game this season. New York will have to watch for Kendall Wright, who had 132 yards and a touchdown on seven catches against Houston. Titans tight end Delanie Walker ranks second among AFC tight ends in receiving yards (673) and has 44 catches for four touchdowns. Walker has good speed for his big frame. Tennessee is rated near the bottom in most offensive categories, but should be able to move the football on a Giants stop unit ranked 19th against the pass, 25th in points allowed and 29th in total yards allowed. Titans tackles Taylor Lewan (ankle) and Michael Oher (toe) have been limited this week and neither played against the Texans. Theyre day-to-day. OVERALL ANALYSIS Defense will be at a minimum between the Giants and Titans, while a sense of urgency is expected to be through the roof. New York hasnt been able to find success in the second half of games recently and no lead is safe. The Giants, though, are a much better team than the Titans and will fight their way to a road win Sunday. It doesnt matter whos at quarterback for the Titans because they have more problems than making calls at the line of scrimmage. He would help lead Toronto FC to a strong start, with a 6-1-4 (19 points) record in the clubs first 11 contests. ASHBURN, Va. - Robert Griffin III returned to practice Wednesday for the Washington Redskins, and coach Jay Gruden confirmed that the third-year quarterback will regain the starters job this season.Griffin threw passes in individual and one-on-one drills in his first such work since he dislocated his left ankle in Week 2.Once they say hes healthy and he practices with us, and we feel like hes ready to go mentally and we have a good game plan for him, then hell be the starter, Gruden said. But I dont know when that will be yet. Its hard for me to project. It could be one week, two weeks. It could be five weeks.Griffin wore cleats with high ankle support and looked a bit rusty. His first pass hit fullback Darrel Young on the back of the shin, but he also had some good throws during the one-on-ones when defensive backs were covering receivers.Griffin took the first snap in each of the drills early in the practice, ahead of current starter Kirk CousinsHe looked fine. He got a little bounce in his step, Gruden said. Everything else is going to be up to the trainers and the doctor. Theres nothing I can do as far as rushing him back. The Redskins did not allow Griffin to be interviewed about his participation in practice.Griffin isnt expected to play until Nov. 2 against Minnesota at the earliest. A more likely scenario has him back Nov. 16 against Tampa Bay following the bye.Obviously wed like to have him back, but he still does need some work as far as getting back under centre, getting the reps, getting the footwork back down, just the whole process of being a quarterback again, Gruden said. Its not just about going out there and running half-gassers and throwing to wide receivers and routes vs. air. Its about handling the protections, the running game, the audibles, all that good stuff.Griffin was hurt early in a 41-10 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 14. The Redskins (1-5) have since lost four straight with Cousins, and Gruden suggested for the first time that he might turn to third-stringer Colt McCoy if Cousins continues to struggle.Obviously if things continue in this downward spiral, then theres always a chance to see Colt, Gruden said. But I think Kirk will play himself out of it.___AP NFL websites: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Joseph White on Twitter: http://twitter.com/JGWhiteAP Shaquem Griffin Seahawks Jersey . Hutchison discusses his season, his approach to the grind of a long year and shares the one start which has given him his fondest memories. Hint: its not what you may think. Listen to the interview here. Below is the transcript of the conversation: TSN.ca: Drew, one more start left before you put the wraps on your first full big league season. How would you describe how your season has gone? HUTCHISON: I think there are a couple of different ways to look at it. Obviously, your first goal every year is to stay healthy and make every start so I think that was my first goal and going into this last one, so far, Ive been able to do that so I think thats a very big positive. I think Ive had a pretty interesting season, a lot of real highs and real lows, unfortunately. But I think overall its been good and I think its a good starting point is probably the best way to sum it up. TSN.ca: Youre not going to get to 200 innings but youre effectively knocking on that door the first year off of Tommy John. How has your arm held up over the course of the year? Youve had some time now to look back. Were there periods when youve felt better at times than others? HUTCHISON: Yeah, I think that goes for every year though even if youre not really coming off injuries. Every pitcher goes through that every year. I felt good all year and I felt healthy and strong all year. I think I had to get over little a bit of a hump in the middle of the year and then after I did that I felt Ive gotten stronger as weve gotten to the end here and I feel good and I think thats just a byproduct of pitching and going 100 and however many innings Im going to end up with. I think thats just the normal ebbs and flows of the year. TSN.ca: Its funny, talked to Mark Buehrle yesterday and he said the same thing and hes so much further along in his career than you. Can you describe what thats like? I mean, its not so much pain or anything but when you have so-called "dead arm" or youre going through a tired phase, what does that feel like or what does that result in? HUTCHISON: I mean, you talk to any pitcher when they take the mound theyre not always going to feel great, 100-percent, every part of their body. Its just how it is. This season is a long grind and you do everything you can to take care of your body and put yourself in the best position that you can. Thats just part of the long season. Thats just the way it goes. Whatever you have that night you have and you go out there and give it all you have with what youve got. Thats not pain; thats not being hurt; thats none of that. Thats just pitching. TSN.ca: Youre striking out about 23-percent of the hitters you face. I think youre Top-20, averaging a little more than 8.8 hitters struck out per nine innings. Are you more of a strikeout pitcher than maybe you thought you would have been when you broke into the big leagues? HUTCHISON: No. I mean Ive always been able to strike out hitters because I feel like I have good fastball command and if you get ahead of hitters then youve earned the right to put them away and thats the way Ive always approached it. Ive always been able to strike out guys through the minor leagues. I had really good command in the minor leagues so I guess sometimes when you have good command youre not really associated with overpowering stuff or striking guys out just because of that. But I think thats just a byproduct of commanding the baseball and when you get ahead of guys youre able to put them away. TSN.ca: The slider too is a huge pitch for you. I mean, you were getting, I think, some pretty nice comparisons from outside observers with that pitch. HUTCHISON: Yeah, I think its come a long way, especially since I got called up in 2012. It was probably the pitch I was working on the most at the time. Where its come, even throughout the season, Im real happy with what Ive able to do with it with Pete, you know the work weve put in with it to get it consistent and throwing it to both sides of the plate, which Ive been able to do here recently I think has been part of the reason Ive had so many strikeouts. I think thats big a pitch for me to continue to develop that and continue to get better with all my pitches. My fastball command this year, its been good but it hasnt really been to my standards of it. There have been times where Ive had some bad games when Ive struggled because of the command of my fastball. My command, I take a lot of pride in that so thats been a little bit frustrating to not have that to my standards as much but its something Im looking forward to improving. TSN.ca: On a positive note, which start and there have been a few but which start stands out to you as maybe your favourite looking back on the season? HUTCHISON: Chicago. No doubt. TSN.ca: Thats interesting because in my head Im thinking Arlington, where you stare down Yu Darvish and you outpitch him. I think it was a two-hit shutout. But Chicago, if you remember that, the tough first inning and then you hung in. HUTCHISON: Yeah, I threw 50-something pitches in the first inning and still went seven. I think thats what pitchings all about to me because as a starting pitcher your job is to go deep and give your team a chance to win. So to be able to go back out there and continue to pitch and get through seven innings given the way I came out and the way I started, wwe did have a chance to win the game.dddddddddddd In spite of all that our offence came back and battled. We didnt win the game but at the same time to still have the faith from your manager and your teammates out there to stay out there and keep it right there for them, I take pride in those type of starts because I think thats when you show what youre really made of. TSN.ca: Are you any sort of a believer in momentum because I think that Chicago start, the first inning of that Chicago start, was really the last time you struggled quite badly? Youve had a really nice run since that time. HUTCHISON: Yeah, I mean, I was throwing the ball well I felt like going into that and I made a couple of bad pitches. I walked a couple of guys and then gave up a grand slam and then gave up another home run in that inning. Thats whats frustrating about that start, when you look back on it, after the grand slam, you get out of it and we win that game. Instead of being able to bear down I gave up another one in that inning. It was very similar to my start against the Orioles, you know a couple of bad pitches. I guess that can kind of some up my season at some points is dominatingly brutal at times where, you know, you have a good run but you make a couple of bad pitches and you pay for it and thats what happens at this level. TSN.ca: Theres a lot of talk about how hard it is and I think that there is proof, given that this team hasnt signed a high profile pitching free agent since A.J. Burnett, about how hard it is to lure free agent pitchers to Toronto because of the homerdome. How difficult is it to pitch in this park compared to some of the other places you go to? HUTCHISON: I mean, it is what it is. I like pitching here. I know a lot was made of my home-road splits early in the year and if you look at them now it kind of tells the story. People get caught up in that and sometimes they shouldnt. It is what it is. We play in the AL East, a lot of big hitters and a lot of small ballparks. Its just what it is. Its a challenge and thats whats fun about it is to face some of the best hitters and not have a lot of margin for error. TSN.ca: When you look ahead, yourself, Marcus (Stroman), Aaron Sanchez, Daniel Norris is knocking on the door, there may be a surprise or two coming along down the pipe as well, I mean is this an exciting time in your mind for this franchise with the number of good, quality young arms that you would hope are going to be able to carry this franchise for years to come? HUTCHISON: Yeah I hope so. Obviously to be mentioned as part of that, its exciting. At the same time, this year, its disappointing to be where we were and the opportunity that we had and then ultimately to have what happened happen, its disappointing. I take ownership in that along with everyone else. You never want to chalk things up to experience because Im not a believer in just going out there and getting experience and looking toward the future because its about winning and its about getting the job done now but as you look toward the future it is exciting. TSN.ca: Weve talked before. Youre kind of a no-nonsense guy. You dont like excuses. How hard are you on yourself after a tough outing? How able are you to just sort of sluff it off and look ahead to five days later? HUTCHISON: I have my process. Just like a good start or a bad start, you dont get obsessed with a great start and you dont get obsessed with a terrible start, both ways, whichever way it happens to be going for you at that time. You stick to your process and what you need to do to get prepared for your next one because you learn from your previous one, good and bad. I have the standard that I set for myself. Whether people want to say Im too hard on myself or too easy on myself, thats not really relevant to me. I want to win and thats what its about so I do everything I can to go out there and give us the best chance to win every time I take the ball and it sounds cliché and it sounds all that but really thats what its about, to be able to look yourself in the mirror and know youve done everything you can to give your team a chance. TSN.ca: Im probably asking you an impossible question because I think Im going to ask you to talk about yourself in a way that you just naturally are. But there are some guys who get so deep into their own heads that they cant come out of it or it eats them up. Youre still so young in this game. Is that a product of the way you were raised, the experiences that you had coming up through the sport? To what do you attribute just your ability at such a young age to just kind of deal with it? HUTCHISON: The things you mentioned, I think its a little bit of all of that. Naturally you are who you are and you cant be anybody else. Im a big believer in you have to be yourself in order to be successful. Definitely part of it could be the way that I was raised or the way Ive come up through baseball with other guys Ive played with or whatever have it be, you know its just me. To be successful I have to do that. As you talk about team and winning I think thats everybody. You have to be yourself within the confines of the team and its just the way I am. TSN.ca: How close is this team to being a legit contender in the American League East? HUTCHISON: I think we showed it earlier in the year. Unfortunately we had injuries, just like everybody else had injuries, thats never an excuse you know, you have to step up and get over injuries and things like that. We had a real chance this year and I think we showed the type of team we are and unfortunately we just didnt get the job done. I think its pretty much that simple. Thats on me and every other guy in here and its on us going forward to not let that happen again. TSN.ca: Thanks so much, Drew, appreciate it. HUTCHISON: No problem. ' ' '

Nick Diaz got a hug the other night, out of the blue. A male fan came up to the oft-prickly UFC fighter on the street and showed him some love. Somebody just walked up and hugged me, Diaz recalled. I figured I know this person, I live in a small town. Then it was like I dont know this person at all. Ive got to deal with that. The 31-year-old bad boy from Stockton, Calif., wasnt really complaining. Pressed on the issue, he conceded the happy stranger was a nice guy and a huge fan. He gave me the hug first before he told me that, Diaz said with a laugh. But he was really excited, he really was a big fan. And I appreciated he wasnt weird or nothing. He was just a fan. It speaks volumes about Diaz that the former Strikeforce champion attracts such a following despite often refusing to play by the rules and showing a snarling persona rather than a smile. There are two kinds of Diaz watchers: those who applaud his I dont give a damn attitude and those who tune in hoping he will have the trash talk beaten out of him by his opponent. For the UFC, thats two fan bases in one and helps explain why it keeps going back to what amounts to a six-foot walking headache. UFC president Dana White was reaching for the aspirin again this week when Diaz failed to show up for a public workout session Wednesday ahead of his UFC 183 showdown Saturday with former middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Its the first fight for the 39-year-old Silva (33-6) since he suffered a gruesome leg injury in a loss to title-holder Chris Weidman at UFC 168 in December 2013. Diaz (27-9-1) had elected not to get on his scheduled flight, the UFC later explained. The fighter landed in Las Vegas later Wednesday but not before White tweeted a photo of a milk carton with Diazs face on the side. White said this week that a film crew dispatched to Diazs home for the UFC Embedded video series had been unable to find him. This is a fighter who was pulled from a UFC 137 title bout with then-welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre after refusing to show up for press conferences. He once brawled with fellow fighter Joe (Diesel) Riggs in the hospital after their UFC 57 showdown. Diaz has also been suspended twice for positive marijuana tests. Diaz told the Nevada State Athletic Commission after the most recent failed drug test that he had been prescribed a medical marijuana card to help deal with his ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). When Diaz did fight St-Pierre at UFC 158, he showed off his chatty side by launching into a stream of consciousness monologue of which White later said (In terms of) craziness, that was a 10 out of 10. He is a fascinating human being, very tough to figure out, White added. What most people care about, he does not. Hes a very unique individual. Younger brother Nate is equally abrasive. His signature win involved flexing his muscles and displaying two middle fingers while opponent Kurt Pellegrino was locked in a triangle choke. After losing to GSP, Nick Diaz had reporters and White shaking their heads when the fighter confessed: Ive never paid taxes in my life, Im probably going to go to jail. Diaz, a black belt in jiu-jitsu with slick boxing skills, has also admitted he doesnt much like fighting for a living. Its pretty rough. I dont recommend anybody to be a fighter, he said last July. Fighting is not something I enjoy doing. Its something I do that I feel I have to do and thats just the way it is. I dont like to hurt anybody, he added. Im a non-violent person. And yet when he is in the cage, he usually belittles his opponents with a torrent of trash-talk. Diaz, whose workout regimen includes triathlons, has fought at both welterweight (170 pounds) and middleweight (185). He says he walks around at close to 200 pounds and that making 170 has been pretty rough in the past. For all his quirks, the UFC Primetime show before his UFC 143 fight with Carlos (The Natural Born Killer) Condit showed Diaz as a loyal, single-minded athlete willing to dispense with the social niceties in search of excellence. Diaz often said he wants to be known as someone who who kept it real. But he does it while travelling a bumpy road. Like my lifes a mess, Diaz said in March 2013.
