Auburn Hills, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Jennings and Greg Monroe posted double-doubles and the Detroit Pistons got back in the win column with a 98-93 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. Jennings scored all 20 of his points in the second half and handed out 11 assists while Monroe finished with 16 points and a season-high 17 rebounds for Detroit, winners in eight of nine since waiving Josh Smith. The Pistons won seven straight before falling to the Eastern Conference- leading Hawks 106-103 on Friday. Winning is always fun, Monroe said. We just want to keep it going. Joe Johnson led six Nets in double figures with 17 points, while Brook Lopez contributed 11 points and 15 rebounds off the bench. Brooklyn has lost five in a row. The Pistons led by five after three quarters, but their lead was down to 84-82 following Darius Morris layup with 4 1/2 to play. Out of a timeout, transition layups by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jennings pushed the spread back to six. Jennings then hit a 3-pointer from the left corner, and after empty possessions both ways and a media timeout, Monroes layup with just under two minutes to play gave Detroit a 93-84 advantage. Jonas Jerebko then nailed the dagger a minute later, a top-of-the-key 3 at 1:10. When you give teams easy, uncontested layups its hard to win, Nets center Mason Plumlee said. The Pistons led for most of the first half, only trailing for one minute and 16 seconds in the second quarter, but never created much distance. Down by three following four straight Brooklyn free throws -- two each by Bojan Bogdanovic and Alan Anderson -- Kyle Singler hit a 3-pointer just before halftime to tie it at 47-47. Jennings scored 13 points in the third. Game Notes Lopez hit his first career regular-season 3-pointer with 16 seconds left ... The Nets had won three straight in this series ... But MacIntyre and defenders in front of him withstood a late Wolves push to claim a 4-2 victory and 2-0 advantage in the Western Conference semifinal series. "They were buzzing, they were more desperate after (our) 3-0 lead and really dominated us at times," said MacIntyre, who was provided with a three-goal first period cushion. "I think we sat back and let them come a We have to be better when were having that lead and still play like its a 0-0 game." Still, the club heads home with a chance to clinch the American Hockey League series on home ice with three scheduled games at Ricoh Coliseum. "You come into these series and hope to find a way to get into overtime one night and steal a game and to come out with two is great," Marlies coach Steve Spott said. "I give Chicago a lot of credit. They threw everything they had at us and we had to weather the storm." It took just 64 seconds for Torontos first strike. Centre Peter Holland picked up a loose puck following a Wolves turnover behind their net and dumped a shot past Chicago goalie Jake Alllen for a 1-0 lead. Toronto made it 2-0 at 7:38 mark when Brandon Kozun lined up for a shot on goal but found cenntre Trevor Smith open to Allens right.dddddddddddd. The Wolves finally scored as right winger Shane Harper broke MacIntyres shutout at 1:46 of the third. Chicago narrowed the margin to 3-2 on left winger Dmitrij Jaskins power-play goal at 17:21, but Marlies left winger Jerry DAmigo secured the win with an empty netter with 57 seconds to play. "We became a harder hockey club, a more seasoned hockey club," Spott said. "Its really the first time we had to deal with big-time adversity, so its nice that we dealt with it." MacIntyre made 22 saves for the win while Allen turned away 18 shots in defeat. "Theyre goalie played good and he blocked a lot of our shots but you cant make four or five horrendous errors early in the game to get down like that," said Wolves coach John Anderson. Villanova, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Villanova quarterback John Robertson says the Wildcats thrive on playing from behind. They faced their biggest deficit of the season in the FCS playoffs Saturday, but rallied to beat Liberty, 29-22, behind Robertsons TD pass and run in the fourth quarter of their second-round matchup. The sixth-seeded Wildcats (11-2) will host Sam Houston State (10-4) in the national quarterfinals next weekend. Sam Houston went on the road to upset third-seeded Jacksonville State on Saturday. Villanova faced a 13-0 deficit in the second quarter and was behind the Big South Conference co-champion 22-14 entering the fourth quarter. But Robertson connected on a 70-yard bomb to Kevin Gulyas to pull Villanova within 22-20 with 13:17 left to play. Robertson then ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game. After Villanova stopped Liberty (9-5) on a three-and-out Robertson took the Wildcats on an 18-play, 84-yard march and ran in the winning touchdown from 1 yard out with 1:12 remaining. Robertson also scored from 3 yards out in the second quarter and finished with 100 yards on 18 carries. He added 217 passing yards for the second-place team in CAA Football. Kevin Monangai carried the ball 20 times for 102 yards. Villanova had a 447-246 advantage in yards. Look for anybody else in here, you hate to see somebody down like that.Theres still a game to be played. Unfortunately theyre still passing out points at the end of the game.Rookie defender Nick Hagglund scored twice in the second half to set the stage for Bradley, whose curling free kick from more than 35 yards out went through a mass of players a€” freezing goalie Donovan Ricketts a€” and into the goal without being touched.Rallying from a 2-0 deficit after just 16 minutes, Toronto scored three second-half goals in 27 minutes in a character-defining comeback. These are the kind of days that can change seasons, said Bradley, who initiated Torontos second goal via another free kick.We know theres still a lot we can improve on, we still need to be better, he added. Were still right in the thick of it.But if you use these kind of afternoons in the right way, they can give you a real boost. The game, played on a sunny 22 C afternoon before an announced sellout crowd of 22,591 at BMO Field, was a matchup of two teams on the playoff bubble, with both carefully watching results of clubs around them. The Timbers started the day in fifth place in the West while Toronto was seventh in the East, three points out of the playoff picture. The win moved TFC into fifth place and a playoff spot, at least temporarily pending the outcome of the Columbus-Montreal game later in the day. Eastern-leading D.C. United did Toronto a favour by defeating Philadelphia 1-0.Toronto (11-11-7) stretched its unbeaten streak to three (2-0-1) while recording a franchise record 11th win of the season, surpassing the club mark for victories (10) and points (39), both set during a 10-11-9 season in 2009.Coach Greg Vanney called it a remarkable comeback. When I look in the guys eyes after, theyre believing, he said. Theyre very much believing in what they have to accomplish this season. The loss snapped Portlands unbeaten streak at four but the outcome will be overshadowed by the loss of its influential and popular captain. It turned into a game of two halves, with Portland holding the edge in the first a€” scoring twice in the first 16 minutes a€” and Toronto taking over in the second.Fanendo Adi scored for Portland, which also got an own goal from Toronto captain Steven Caldwell.Toronto started its comeback in the 62nd minute with Hagglund rising high tto head in a cross from Daniel Lovitz for his first MLS goal.dddddddddddd Minutes later, Ricketts stopped Dominic Oduro from in close to preserve the lead.Toronto made it 2-2 eight minutes later off another Bradley free kick that went through a mass of humanity before an open Hagglund, whose giveaway led to Portlands first goal, headed the ball down and it went in at the far post. The game started on a disastrous note for Portland, with Johnson injuring his right leg in a shin-on-shin collision with Toronto fullback Mark Bloom in a 50-50 challenge that saw both players sliding to get to the ball first. Johnson immediately grabbed his right leg just below the knee and motioned to be substituted. He was taken off on a stretcher with a fractured fibula and tibia in his right leg after a lengthy delay with Bradley looking on closely. The injury led to eight minutes extra time at the end of the first half.Johnson remained in Toronto to have surgery.Bloom was able to continue and wasnt penalized on the play. But he was in pain after the game, his leg throbbing from the collision.Referee Ismail Elfath pocketed his whistle for much of the contest, infuriating both sides at different times but helping make for a fast-paced, exciting game. The offensively gifted, defensively challenged Timbers came into the game with 52 goals, averaging 1.79 a game to stand third best in the league, and had scored three or more in three of their last four MLS games. And they carved open Torontos backline repeatedly.Portland went ahead in the 13th minute when Hagglunds pass out of defence hit midfielder Diego Chara, who fed Adi. The Nigerian striker headed straight into the penalty box and his low right-footed shot beat Joe Bendik.Three minutes later, it was 2-0 after Toronto failed to clear a corner. Diego Valeri, who pulled the Portland strings for most of the day, raked the ball across the penalty box and it bounced in off Caldwell.Caldwell thought he had repaid the debt three minutes later when his header off a Bradley free kick beat Ricketts. But the play was called offside.Toronto should have pulled to within a goal in the 20th minute when Oduros cross beat everyone and found Gilberto at the far post with the net wide open. But the Brazilians stubbed shot somehow went wide.Portland almost scored an own goal of its own in the 36th minute when defender Pa Modou Kahs attempted clearance of an Oduro cross rattled off the goalpost.Rodney Wallace shot wide in the 53rd minute, clutching his head in disbelief after Portland sliced through the Toronto backline yet again. The game marked the second time in club history that Toronto FC has overcome a two-goal deficit to win in MLS league playIt also was the 15th consecutive sellout at BMO Field, helping set a league record as the 113th soldout match across all teams this season.Follow @NeilMDavidson on Twitter cheap falcons jerseyscheap ravens jerseyscheap bills jerseyscheap bears jerseyscheap bengals jerseyscheap cowboys jerseyscheap lions jerseyscheap texans jerseyscheap colts jerseyscheap jaguars jerseyscheap chiefs jerseyscheap rams jerseyscheap dolphins jerseyscheap vikings jerseyscheap saints jerseyscheap giants jerseyscheap jets jerseyscheap eagles jerseyscheap steelers jerseyscheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '
Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Galchenyuk may be nearing his return. The Canadiens held their first practice after the NHLs Olympic break began on Feb. 9 and Galchenyuk – who has been out since Jan. 6 with a broken right hand - displayed some offensive flash that might indicate hes on the mend. Galchenyuk, 20, showed off some sweet moves in practice, hinting that his offensive form may be coming around. However, the American forward told reporters that his hands may still need time to catch up with the offensive creativity in his brain. "You need to get those movements back," Galchenyuk told reporters after practice. "You get used to a simple thing [like a] tow-drag, you just have to get it smoother. The hand is not used to those movements." "In your head you know you can do it, but the hand has been straight for three weeks so you just gotta keep going through it, but I think Im going in the right direction." The 27-year-old wants to believe that a turnaround is still possible, that his team can salvage the season, dig out from a deepening slide and claim a second straight playoff berth. But as time ticks down and the results continue to linger in the wrong direction, that belief is tested. "Its a struggle," he said in a near-empty visitors dressing room at Wells Fargo Center. "Ill tell you that. We thought we had something going here tonight." Whatever fight they mustered in a 4-2 loss to the Flyers didt matter by the time the night was through. It was just another empty loss, another opportunity to regain ground for not. "Overall, I didnt think that we had that bad of a night," said coach Randy Carlyle afterward, but we were on the wrong side of the score and thats what counts the most." Never more evident than at this late stage in the season, the difference between winning and losing remained painfully thin. And for the Leafs it was just enough for defeat. Two power-play goals against, a few too many odd-man rushes, a bad break or two and a key mistake at the wrong time. Claude Giroux was the benefactor of one such mistake that sealed defeat for the visitors. The Flyers captain picked off former teammate James van Riemsdyks neutral ice pass attempt - the puck ricocheted off the skate of Scott Hartnell - and zipped a bullet beyond the glove of Jonathan Bernier. "Right now every big scoring chance they get, I think it feels like its going in," said Bernier afterward. "When its not going your way, thats usually what happens." "I thought we played pretty good," he continued. "A few mistakes that end up being goals. From the last game, obviously, I think we played a lot better." But like their harrowing loss to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, one that saw them manhandled for half the game by the top team in the West, Fridays defeat in Philly counted all the same. It was just another loss at a critical point in the season. "We worked hard," Carlyle said. "Did we work smart enough in some areas? No." Any chance the Leafs have at resuscitation starts Saturday night in a massive showdown with the Detroit Red Wings. A victory reignites whatever belief and hope still lingers. They may have no hope of catching either the Montreal Canadiens or Tampa Bay Lightning, but sitting on near-equal ground with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Red Wings and Washington Capitals - all have 80 points, but with games in hand - a wild card position is still in play. "Obviously, this one, its going to be a tough one to swallow," Bernier said. "But, at the same time, we cant feel sorry for ourselves. [Saturday] is a big game and we all know that." Five Points 1. Carlyles Approach Carlyle has tried to push a few different buttons in midst of his teams recent slide. "Some days, it is a little bit more harsh. Some days, its a pat in the back. Some days its a hug," Carlyle said on Friday morning. "Whatever it is, whatever you feel is necessary. Nobody in life feels like coming to work and being ground into the dirt everyday and thats part of the process. Youve got to pick and choose when to apply pressure and when not to." As to his preferred approach of late, Carlyle said, "Its been more reality of the situation. Just showing and trying to get an understanding that were not that far away. But there are some areas that need to be addressed. Thats as simple as I can put it. Our compete level has to go up. We havent won enough one-on-one battles. Weve given up too many odd-man rushes and breakaways. Weve got to play better on the defensive side of the game." 2. Penalty Kill The Flyers scored twice on the power play, marking the 12th time this season that the Leaf penalty kill has given up two goals in a game this season. Vincent Lecavalier fired a laser for the first of two, a five-on-three goal that was not without some controversy. Jay McClement, taking the draw as Torontos lone forward, was thrown out of the face-off ciircle, charged with knocking the puck from the hand of linesman Michel Cormier.dddddddddddd Dion Phaneuf promptly stepped in and lost the first (and likely last) face-off of his career, Lecavalier blowing the one-timer by Bernier just three seconds later. "Thats not something that you want to happen," McClement said of the face-off incident. "I dont think [Cormier] wanted to do it either. But he explained to me that its black and white when I knocked it out of his hand." Scott Hartnell would add the second power-play marker, redirecting a Kimmo Timonen point shot just beyond the grasp of Bernier. The Toronto penalty kill remains third-worst in the NHL this season. 3. Bollands Comeback Dave Bolland scored for the third time this season in Philadelphia and the first time since his left ankle was sliced by the skate of Zack Kassian on November 2. The 27-year-old hasnt played more than 13 minutes since he returned from the injury and he was kept right in that region against the Flyers. "I just see that in some of the situations, hes struggled with the mobility," Carlyle said of Bolland before the 4-2 loss. "Its not sore, [but] it just doesnt have the strength there. Wre going to try to find a way to get him some more minutes. We know what kind of player he is." 4. The 18-Wheeler Luke Schenn was there in 2012 when the Leafs collapsed and knows all too well how quickly the pressure rises in Toronto. "Lose a couple in a row and everything magnifies that much more," he said. "You lose three in a row and people tend to get on you a little bit. All the fans and the media think that everythings falling apart. Thats just the way it is over there. "Its obviously a tough market to play in when things arent going the way you want them to, but its a great market when things are going well. Theres always adversity in Toronto. Its never going to change. Im sure those guys are going to get through it." Reflecting back to the infamous 18-wheeler skid two years earlier, Schenn couldnt put his finger on just what wrong. "There is no exact reason why. Its probably a combination of different things. Id have to go back and look. Obviously, youre probably getting off to some tough starts in games. Special teams probably werent as good as they need to be. At the end of the day - when I was there - it probably just came down to being outcompeted some nights. Obviously, you lose a couple in a row, confidence isnt always there. Thats just the way it goes. Youve got to find ways to get out of it." 5. Gardiner Offence Just ahead of a clash with the Flyers three weeks ago, Jake Gardiner revealed his disappointment with the offence hed put together to that point. "I dont think my point production has been that great this year,"he said. "Id like to improve on that." The 23-year-old scored a goal the next night in a 4-3 overtime win, rounding up nine points in the past 11 games, including a helper on Bollands seventh goal this season. "Ive tried to jump in the play a lot more and be an offensive threat from the blue line," he explained of his recent surge prior to the game. Gardiner has 26 points on the year. LOS ANGELES -- The Beard is staying in Los Angeles. The Dodgers on Saturday announced they have signed free-agent reliever Brian Wilson to a $10 million, one-year deal to stay with the team. The deal includes an $8.5 million player option for 2015. General manager Ned Colletti says that considering how well Wilson pitched down the stretch and in the post-season the team is glad to have him return. Wilson, a right-hander and the 2010 major league saves leader while with San Francisco, joined the NL West champion Dodgers last season after a second Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. He missed almost the entire 2012 season when the Giants won their second World Series in three years. Wilson tossed scoreless relief in 17 of 18 regular season games, going 2-1 with a 0.66 ERA. The 31-year-old reliever was 1-0 and pitched six scoreless innings in six post-season appearances. Authentic Shea Theodore Jersey . The 27-year-old wants to believe that a turnaround is still possible, that his team can salvage the season, dig out from a deepening slide and claim a second straight playoff berth. Stats-Pack 1-8-0 – Leafs record in the past nine games. 9 – Points in the last 11 games for Jake Gardiner. 3 – Goals by Dave Bolland in Philadelphia this season. 24:31 – Ice-time for James van Riemsdyk opposite his former team Friday, tied for the team-lead. 15 – Consecutive games without a point for David Clarkson, who has just 10 this season. 8 – Number of times the Leafs have allowed the first goal in the past nine games.4 – Seconds elapsed in the second period before van Riemsdyk scored the first Leafs goal. TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger have the latest ahead of the NHL Draft on potential Jason Spezza trades, Dave Bolland heading to free agency, Joe Thornton and Ryan Kesler, and more. Thirteen years ago the Ottawa Senators drafted Jason Spezza. Now are they going to trade Spezza on Draft Day or perhaps even before? Bob McKenzie: They certainly hope so, and the talk has picked up the past 24-48 hours to the point now where there are four teams talking to the Senators about Spezza. Three of those teams are in the Western Conference and we know Anaheim and St. Louis are among that group. One mystery team in the Eastern Conference has entered the fray which makes things a little interesting. Keep in mind Spezza has a list of 10 teams that he cannot be traded to and there are four Eastern Conference teams that are on that list including Florida, Carolina, Columbus, and the New York Islanders. In a perfect world the Senators would like to have this done before or at the Draft; they would like to get a first-round pick in Fridays draft as part of the compensation for Spezza. David Bolland is set to become a free agent July 1 but Toronto has been looking at getting a deal done. Now they know exactly what he wants, is it too steep? Darren Dreger: He wants maximum value and as far as the Maple Leafs are concerned, yes its too steep. Its believed that hes asking for the maximum eight years to stay with the Leafs and at $4.9 million per year. Thats a tough hit. At 28-years-old, Bollands earned his right to unrestricted free agency. I believe the Leafs would be more comfortable in that 5-6 year range so its very likely Bolland is going to unrestricted free agency. Hes not healthy yet but hes well on his way and he hopes and believes hell be at 100% as early as training camp. Are the Edmonton Oilers in pursuit of a centre? Dreger: Yes, theyre looking for a centre and a defenceman and theyre very active. Theyre throwing out some considerable assets as well; we know that the Oilers third overall pick is very much in play. And Sam Gagners name seems to surface annually at the draft, hes also trade bait for Edmonton. And the Oilers are still in the game for the first overall pick with Florida. Will Joe Thornton go anywhere? McKenzie: Not right now. Its a dicey situation, I think in a perfect world the San Jose Sharks would like to try and trade Thornton and begin a rebuilding process using the return as a centerpiece for it. But as of right now, Thornton has no intention of waiving his no-move clause to go anywhere. Theres no list whatsoever, and if there was a list I suspect it would include teams the Sharks probably wouldnt want to trade him to like the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, or Chicago Blackhawks. In the meantime Thornton, as the captain of the team, is meeting with the core group of players and trying to pick up the pieces and carry on but well see what happens. So no list for Thornton but there definitely is a list for Ryan Kesler… McKenzie: There is a list of six teams for Kesler and the two teams that seem to be the most interested in him right now are the Blackhawks and Ducks; thats not news. Theres nothing imminent on the Kesler front because I get the sense that Anaheim and Chicago believe theyre the only two teams in the running, therefore the offers arent good enough for what Vancouver wants to do. Vancouver isnt going to do this deal if they dont get the right amount, or at least not at the draft. And the other thing for the Canucks, like a lot of teams, theyre trying to move up and get the first overall pick. Right now Panthers GM Dale Tallon has three legitimate offers, which is up from one. But dont confuse legitimate offers with a deal that he would absolutely make right now. Right now its more likely hell be using the first overall pick to make a selection than trading it. Is Dan Boyle about to get a lot of legitimate offers? Dreger: It was a brisk day in the Boyle camp, at least eight teams have made contact with Boyles representatives, and many of those teams will meet with his representatives on Thursday and that of course includes the Maple Leafs. A day after trading their star goalie to St. Louis, the Buffalo Sabres lost another face of their franchise after LaFontaine abruptly resigned as president of hockey operations on Saturday a little more than three months after being brought in to provide a new direction to the NHLs last-place team. The Sabres announced the decision in a news release issued after speculation had been raised of a potential front-office shake-up involving LaFontaine. "I would like to thank Pat for all he has done for the organization," Sabres owner Terry Pegula said in the release. "Pat joined us at a very difficult time, and helped transition the organization down a new path." The Sabres said LaFontaine would be returning to his previous role working with the National Hockey League. LaFontaine had been working with the league on player safety issues before being hired by the Sabres in mid-November. The former Sabres captains arrival was hailed as a major turning point for a struggling team. LaFontaine took over following a change in the front office during which general manager Darcy Regier and coach Ron Rolston were dismissed following the Sabres 4-15-1 start. LaFontaines first move was hiring former Sabres coach Ted Nolan to take over as coach on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. LaFontaines next step came in January, when he hired Tim Murray as general manager. "Terry Pegula hired me in November, and my primary objective was to lead the Sabres organization through a time of transition," LaFontaine said in the Sabres release. "Im proud of what weve been able to accomplish in a short period of time, and want to thank Terry and Kim Pegula for the opportunity and their support during my time with the Sabres." LaFontaines resignation still comes as a major surprise. In January, LaFontaine talked openly about how he would use his connections to USA Hockey in a bid to lure national and international events to Buffalo. He leaves a day after Murray made his first big splash by trading star goalie Ryan Miller and captain Steve Ott to the St. Louis Blues. In exchange, the Sabres acquired goalie Jaroslav Halak, forward Chris Stewart, prospect William Carrier, a 2015 first-round pick and a connditional 2016 third-round pick in a deal reached in advance of the NHL trade deadline on Wednesday.dddddddddddd The Sabres (18-34-8) had the day off on Saturday, and return to practice on Sunday before travelling to play at Dallas on Monday. They remain in last place, but are enjoying their first three-game winning streak following a 4-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Friday. This is not the first time LaFontaine has abruptly stepped down as an NHL team executive. In July 2006, LaFontaine quit the New York Islanders a little over a month after being brought in to serve as senior adviser to owner Charles Wang. In Buffalo, LaFontaines absence was notable this week once the team returned to the ice following the leagues Olympic break. He was not spotted in the press box during the Sabres three-game homestand that began with a 3-2 win over Carolina on Tuesday. That was unusual because LaFontaine had previously spent time watching games from the press-box level in Pegulas box, alongside Murray and several of the owners associates. LaFontaine also missed the teams "Power Play Luncheon" for fans on Friday, when he was scheduled to speak along with fellow former Sabres greats Gilbert Perreault, Rene Robert and Danny Gare. The crowd was informed LaFontaine had the flu. The Sabres have become a top-heavy organization since Regiers dismissal. Pegula created the position of president of hockey operations to hire LaFontaine. And Pegula did so only after LaFontaine declined a chance to become the GM by saying he didnt think he had enough experience for that job. Along with hiring Murray, the Sabres also brought in Hockey Hall of Fame member and long-time executive Craig Patrick to serve as a special adviser. LaFontaine backed the hiring of Murray and Patrick, by referring to both as his "wingers." He also discussed how important it was for him to be building a front-office team that could work together in rebuilding a team that has missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, and not won a playoff round since reaching the 2007 Eastern Conference finals. Its not clear what effect LaFontaines departure will have on the teams short-term future, including Nolans status. Murray said this week hes already had discussions with Nolan about extending his contract beyond this season. cheap falcons jerseyscheap ravens jerseyscheap bills jerseyscheap bears jerseyscheap bengals jerseyscheap cowboys jerseyscheap lions jerseyscheap texans jerseyscheap colts jerseyscheap jaguars jerseyscheap chiefs jerseyscheap rams jerseyscheap dolphins jerseyscheap vikings jerseyscheap saints jerseyscheap giants jerseyscheap jets jerseyscheap eagles jerseyscheap steelers jerseyscheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '

The first time I saw Anthony Calvillo in person I was lined up 15 yards away from him on a scorching hot field in Las Vegas, Nevada. The year was 1994, and Calvillo was a rookie starter for the Las Vegas Posse, playing against Saskatchewan in the first home game of what would be the Posses one and only season in the Canadian Football League. It is a game that will forever be remembered for the singing of our national anthem when, "O Canada", sounded like, "O Christmas Tree", however, it was also the second game of Calvillos career. It would be a career that would last for 20 years, would include a total of 365 games including playoffs and Grey Cups, and would culminate in Calvillo becoming pro footballs all-time leading passer. The old saying that reads, "you cant judge a book by its cover," couldnt have been more true when it came to my first impression of AC. We had limited information on the team, or Calvillo, it was early in the season and, he was a rookie, so there wasnt much film to watch. I tried to spend as much time as I could watching him in warm up, and I have to say I wasnt all that impressed. I knew he had played under Jim Zorn at Utah State, but he was undersized, bordering on skinny, and had a weird looking throwing style. I have to admit, I envisioned a lopsided win for the visiting team that day, that is until we kicked it off, and Calvillo started chucking the football around like he was playing in the playground on a Sunday afternoon with his brothers in La Puente, California. There is always a cat and mouse game that goes on between the free safety and a quarterback in football, and even though I was playing in my 11th year in the CFL, it didnt take long for AC to start making me feel like the mouse. The Posse won that night by a score of 32-22 and I would never underestimate the ability of Anthony Calvillo again. Not as an opponent, or an analyst covering his illustrious career for the last 19 years. Calvillos numbers and records are staggering - most passing yards, 79,816. Most touchdown passes, 455. Most 300-yard passing games, 125. Most 4000+ yard passing seasons, 11. Those are just a few of the records Calvillo holds, but he is also the leading passer in Grey Cup games, starting in eight of them, and winning on three occasions. And he has won more games as a starter than any quarterback in CFL history. Of the 277 games that AC started he won 167. Damon Allen is second on that list, winning 162. They are numbers and records that in some cases look unreachable. But as mind-numbing as they are, what is more impressive is how he achieved them. To see an in-depth look at the challenges that AC has had to overcome in his life, and his career, look no further than the documentary from the series Engraved On A Nation, called The Kid From La Puente. In it AC and his family talk about his personal and professional struggles and how he has constantly had to overcome adversity on and off the football field. Once you see it and understand the mountain that he has had to climb and then compare that to how Calvillo has carried himself, I think you will agree that while he is one of the games all-time best pocket passers, it is his strength of character that makes him great. Through his tough childhood, through fights with cancer, through his humble beginnings professionally, Calvillo has always carried himself with class and integrity. After viewing the documentary again on Monday night I couldnt help but think that most people facing that level of adversity would want to lash out at the world, and become bitter and angry. Or worse, to quit and walk away. Not Number 13, who has played 16 of his 20 years in Montreal. Calvillo has never complained about the hand he was dealt, he just somehow has always found a way to turn it into a winning hand. Over the next few days football fans will talk about his quick release, his ability to anticipate, his passing accuracy, and all of those astronomical numbers. We will discuss his leadership skills and his championships. The focus will be on AC the quarterback, however, personally, I will be thinking of Calvillo, the person. I include myself in a long list of people that have been inspired by his humility through success, and his perseverance through challenges. Later in that 1994 CFL season when the Posse made their one and only trip to Saskatchewan, I got a chance to meet Anthony when he attended a post-game function at my home with some of his teammates. The outcome of the game that night was different than back in Game 2 of the season, and the year had been a tough one for the Posse. And yet even though there was rumours that the team would be folding, I knew I would be seeing a lot more of Anthony Calvillo. In a conversation I had with him that night, he talked about how much he appreciated the opportunity that Canada and the CFL had provided him, and how hard he was going to work to try and stay in the league and improve. I had no idea at the time that I was talking to the player that would eventually become pro footballs all-time leading passer, but there was just something about Calvillos quiet determination that made me think I hadnt seen the last of this quarterback. Congratulations Anthony to you and your family as you walk away from the game on top of the mountain. From up close as an opponent on that hot night in Las Vegas, until your retirement on Tuesday it has been a pleasure watching you throughout this journey. Most will remember the passing yards and the wins, but I will remember the strength of character and class that you have shown every step of the way. Cheap Dallas Stars Gear . DENVER -- Chicago Cubs All-Star first baseman Anthony Rizzo is the winner of the 2014 Branch Rickey award in recognition of his community work with pediatric cancer patients. At 25, hes the youngest person to receive the award -- 4 1-2 months younger than last years winner, Los Angeles Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw. Created by the Rotary Club of Denver in 1991, the Branch Rickey Award honours individuals in baseball who contribute to their communities and are strong role models for young people. Each year, major league teams nominate a player, coach or executive, either active or retired, for the award. The award is named in honour of the late baseball executive known for creating the framework for the modern minor league farm system and for breaking baseballs colour barrier by signing Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the major leagues. He also hired the first Latino player, Roberto Clemente. "Its awesome. It really is," Rizzo said. "What he did, obviously with Jackie Robinson, its pretty special to win the award. To be reccognized for something like that, its special for me and my family.dddddddddddd" In 2007, at the age of 17, Rizzo was drafted by the Boston Red Sox after graduating from high school in Parkland, Florida. During his first season in the minor leagues, he was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. After months of chemotherapy, his cancer went into remission. Since then, hes made regular visits to pediatric cancer patients at Lurie Childrens Hospital in Chicago and Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. The Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation was founded in 2012 to raise money for cancer research and provide support for children and families fighting the disease. The foundation has held two "Walk Offs for Cancer" and two "Cook Offs for Cancer," raising more than $500,000 altogether. The third annual "Walk Off for Cancer" will be held on Nov. 16 in Parkland, Florida. Rizzo joined the Cubs at midseason in 2012 and became the first Cubs player to collect three game-winning hits in his first five games. cheap falcons jerseyscheap ravens jerseyscheap bills jerseyscheap bears jerseyscheap bengals jerseyscheap cowboys jerseyscheap lions jerseyscheap texans jerseyscheap colts jerseyscheap jaguars jerseyscheap chiefs jerseyscheap rams jerseyscheap dolphins jerseyscheap vikings jerseyscheap saints jerseyscheap giants jerseyscheap jets jerseyscheap eagles jerseyscheap steelers jerseyscheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '
Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Paul scored 17 points, handed out 15 assists and pulled down eight rebounds in the Los Angeles Clippers 103-96 win over the Indiana Pacers. Jamal Crawfords 18 off the bench led the Clippers, who have won nine games in a row. Blake Griffin scored 17 with 10 boards and DeAndre Jordan chipped in 12 points with 19 rebounds. C.J. Miles led all scorers with 30 points off Indianas bench. The Pacers reserves scored 66 points in their sixth straight loss. Lavoy Allen added 14 points and 13 rebounds in a reserve role and he was joined by Luis Scola, who finished with 12 points and 14 boards. Trailing by 17 entering the final quarter, the Pacers chipped away at the large deficit. A quick 12-4 spurt, including eight points from Miles, cut the deficit to 86-77. With two minutes remaining, Allens jumper pulled Indiana within two. Crawford answered with a jumper at the other end, then Miles rushed 3-pointer the next possession did not fall. Griffin split a pair of free throws and Indiana couldnt muster any offense from there, as Paul hit two free throws in the closing seconds to account for the final margin. Los Angeles appeared to pull away from Indiana with a big third quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field and limiting the Pacers to 27.3 percent. After Chris Copelands 3-pointer cut the Clippers lead to two points, Paul bookended a 10-0 Los Angeles run with a pair of jumpers. Matt Barnes scored all 11 of his points in the third. The high-scoring Clippers got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 15-8 lead while making six of their first seven shots from the field, with the only miss being a Jordan desperation heave to beat the shot clock. Los Angeles first quarter lead ballooned to as high as 15 with 3:37 left when Paul completed an alley-oop with Griffin in transition, but the Pacers were finally able to get their footing after that. Miles hit his first of four first half 3-pointers in the midst of a 12-2 Pacers run, but Spencer Hawes hit a triple himself with two seconds left to give the Clippers a 33-25 lead after one. The Pacers continued to chip away at the Los Angeles advantage and a pair of Solomon Hill free throws with 3:10 left gave them a one-point edge. The Clippers were able to respond and went on a 10-4 run to head to the locker room with a 54-49 lead. Game Notes Los Angeles snapped a three-game losing streak against Indiana ... Los Angeles J.J. NEW YORK -- Skip Schumaker has been reinstated from the seven-day concussion disabled list and is in the Cincinnati Reds lineup against the New York Yankees. Schumaker was set to bat second and play second base Sunday in place of injured Brandon Phillips. To make room on the roster, the Reds optioned infielder Neftali Soto to Triple-A Louisville. Schumaker was injured when he ran into the outfield wall while trying to make a catch July 10 against the Chicago Cubs. The 34-year-old utility man was batting .240 with a home run and 14 RBIs. After he passed his concussion tests and received approval from Major League Baseball to play, the Reds wanted to make sure Schumaker went through batting practice Sunday without a problem before putting him in the lineup. ANDERSON, Ind. -- Colts left guard Donald Thomas may have re-injured his right quad during Wednesday afternoons practice. Thomas missed all but two games last season with a torn right quad. A person close to the situation said the Colts are checking the right quad, though a full diagnosis has not yet been made. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Colts have not publicly disclosed details of the injury. Thomas appeared to reinjure his right leg during a team drill as he ended up on the ground. The 6-foot-4, 303-pound Connecticut native quickly got up, then limped behind his teammates and tried to walk off the injury. A few moments later, Thomas put both of his hands on top of his head. The Colts remain hopeful Thomas, who also had off-season surgery to repair a torn biceps, will make it back to the field soon. Thomas return was expected to help solidify the Colts offensive line, which used six different starting lineups in the final six regular-season games last year.dddddddddddd That wasnt the only scare for Indianapolis on Wednesday. Receiver T.Y. Hilton also missed the end of the afternoon practice after jamming a finger on his right hand. Tight end Dwayne Allen, who had a season-ending hip injury last year, cornerback Vontae Davis and safety LaRon Landry all sat out for precautionary reasons. All five players were projected to start this season. The Colts are already without running back Vick Ballard who is expected to undergo season-ending surgery on his torn left Achilles tendon. Ballard led the Colts in rushing in 2012 and was trying to return from a torn ACL in his right knee that forced him to miss the last 15 games in 2013. The Colts did have one notable return from the injury front: Running back Trent Richardson worked out in shoulder pads Wednesday for the first time since camp opened. KAMLOOPS, B.C. -- Its one game Kevin Koe never looks forward to playing. "This one, you dont get a lot of enjoyment out of," the Alberta skip said, after beating younger brother Jamie Koe from the Northwest Territories-Yukon 8-3 in eight ends Monday at the Canadian mens curling championship. "Its never fun beating them because Im always cheering for them every year theyre here," he said. "That being said, we needed a win." Alberta improved to 3-1 at the Tim Hortons Brier, at least until the evening draw, when he was set to face unbeaten Manitoba and Jeff Stoughton. The Territories fell to 1-3. "Its good that its early in the week so hopefully both of us win the rest of our games," he added. "Theyre obviously better," Jamie said of the encounters with his brother. "Were going to have to play our best and hope for some breaks but its a fair battle." Jamie Koe has represented the Territories four out of the last five years but when Kevin has been there he has always won the brother-vs.-brother tussle. Monday also saw New Brunswicks James Grattan score his first win this year against Greg Balsdon of Ontario 9-6. Grattan gave Stoughton a fight Sunday as well and said it felt good to get a monkey off his back with the win. "When we went to bed last night we felt pretty good about it," he said of the Manitoba game. "The team in the last two games has really shown up." He says getting used to the ice has been an issue. They lost their first game 13-5 and the second 10-1. "We come from an area of the world where the ice is fairly straight all the time . . Coming out here and all of a sudden youre taking the 12-foot to get to the lid and its a different ball game." Its also important to win games at the Brier if you want a reserved spot in the future. A new system is coming into place that will force the bottom finishers to compete for the right to return. Its being brought in to keep the field the same size with the addition of a Team Canada and new rinks from Nunavut and Yukon, instead of just one Territories team. P.E.I.s Eddie MacKenzie also grabbed a share of second place as he climbed to 3-1 after beating Quebecs Jean-Michel Menard. But, that could change after the evening draw. MacKenzie has already matched his combined record at his first two Brier appearances for Prince Edward Island , in 2011 and 2013. "Its definitely better than 0-5 or 0-6 like we were the last couple of times," he said. "Id say being here the last three out of four years helps for sure, playing on arena ice a little more." Saskatchewans Steve Laycock also sat at 3-1 after beating still winless Nova Scotia 5-3. "We kind of figured 3-1 or 4-0 was where wed want to be after this stretch because we do have some of the favourites coming up," he said. Nova Scotia skip Jamie Murphy isnt too thrilled at the Canadian Curling Association for the changes coming in 2015 that could see Nova Scotia have to fight for the right to play in the Brier. "Were firm believers that messing with traditions such as the Brier doesnt seem like a smart decision," he said of the new system, popularly known as relegation, although it seems anything but popular. The Warriors stole home-court advantage with a 109-105 victory Saturday afternoon. Klay Thompson tallied 22 points and seven rebounds, while David Lee had 20 points and 13 rebounds. Harrison Barnes scored 14 with eight boards off the bench for Golden State, while leading scorer Stephen Curry was limited to 14 points with seven assists and seven turnovers. "I am proud of my guys," said Warriors head coach Mark Jackson. "Were not going to quit. We had a tremendous will. This series is far from over." Chris Paul flirted with a triple-double for Los Angeles, depositing 28 points with eight assists and seven rebounds in the disappointing setback. He helped bring the Clippers back into the contest, but made some critical mistakes late. J.J. Redick added a playoff career-high 22 points and DeAndre Jordan scored 11 and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Blake Griffin, an MVP candidate this season, was plagued by foul trouble for most of the game. He managed 16 points before he fouled out after just 19:14 of action. "I kept putting myself in a bad situation by fouling," Griffin said. "I have to do a better job. I have to play smarter. I think some of us, including myself, wanted it too much. We have to relax." The Warriors were in front through most of the second half, but Paul buried a pair of 3-pointers to tie the contest. It was knotted at 105-105 when Golden States Draymond Green worked his way to the free throw line with 24 seconds left and made both. The Clippers used their final timeout and put the ball in their All-Star Pauls hands, but a hard double team forced Paul to lose it out-of-bounds, although a foul couldve been called. After initially ruling Clippers ball, officials went to the monitors and quickly overturned the call, handing it back to Golden State. It appeared to be a classic case of the refereees electing not to call a foul, instead, letting the team retain possession.dddddddddddd While the replay was used correctly by the officials, the NBA acknowledged a foul shouldve been called. "Just prior to the ball going out-of-bounds, Paul was fouled by Green and Paul should have been granted two free throws. Contact preceding out-of-bounds calls is not a reviewable matter," Rod Thorn, NBA President, Basketball Operations said in a statement. Barnes then made 1-of-2 from the stripe, leaving the door open for Los Angeles, but Paul was intentionally fouled and the 86 percent career foul shooter missed both. Green could have put the game away, but he too missed two free throws with 6.8 seconds to play. On the second miss, the Clippers Darren Collison chased down the rebound and stepped out of bounds. Thompson then took his turn at the stripe and made 1-of-2, sealing the outcome. "We didnt play very well," said Clippers head coach Doc Rivers. "We were in foul trouble most of the game. We played hard but a lot of times I think we lost our trust." There were no fireworks that marred three of the four regular-season meetings between the teams. For the Warriors, who pulled off an upset of the Denver Nuggets in the first round last postseason, it was a great win as they were not immune from foul trouble. Andre Iguodala, a stout defender, fouled out in the fourth quarter after around 20 minutes of action. Golden State is already without its defensive anchor, center Andrew Bogut, who fractured a rib and is out indefinitely. "Maybe being short-handed focused on that a little bit more," said Lee. "We feel like this is two very good basketball teams, were a little bit short- handed so our goal tonight was to come out aggressive and to come out and hit first. That didnt mean get down 10 to one or whatever happened, but thats the way it worked but we feel like we have enough players to win this series and just try to be aggressive." Fargo, ND (SportsNetwork.com) - North Dakota State trailing in the fourth quarter has been a rarity during its three-year reign as the FCS champion, but the Bison have come from behind to win two consecutive playoff games in eight days. Indeed, they continue to have the collective heart of a champion even as teams get closer in the rear-view mirror. Running back John Crockett rushed for 227 yards and two touchdowns and became the Bisons new single-season rushing leader while second-seeded North Dakota State held off eighth-seeded Coastal Carolina, 39-32, Saturday for the second consecutive year in the national quarterfinals. The game was far different from North Dakota States 48-14 playoff rout of Coastal last season, but the Bison (13-1) will host either Sam Houston State or Villanova, who also played Saturday, in the national semifinals next weekend. A week ago, the Bison rallied past Missouri Valley Conference rival South Dakota State in the final minute of their second-round game. On Saturday, they fell behind for the first time, 32-31, on Coastal running back DeAngelo Hendersons 2-yard touchdown run to open the fourth quarter. The Chanticleers, however, failed on a two-point attempt after a second straight score, keeping their lead at one point. North Dakota State then retook the lead two possessions later when Crockett found running room along the Coastal sideline and scored on a 45-yard dash with 9:28 remaining to play. Quarterback Carson Wentz ran up the middle to score a two-point conversion and lift the Bison advantage to 39-32. On Coastals next drive, the Chanticleers converted a fake punt just inside their territory, but didnt gain another first down on the drive. After NDSUs Adam Keller missed a 49-yard field goal that could have put the win away, Bison safety Colten Heagle stymied the Chants final drive with an interception of Alex Ross just inside Bison territory with 53 seconds remaining. Crockett, whos gained three 1,000-yard seasons, has 1,754 this season on a school-record 320 carries, including 26 on Saturday. Hes scored 17 of his 18 touchdowns on the ground. Wentz accounted for three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) in the win. But Big South co-champion Coastal Coastal Carolina (12-2) was nearly up to the challenge as Henderson had 143 rushing yards and the touchdown, and Ross rushed for two touchdowns. It was the most points scored against NDSU during the playoff win streak. North Dakota State, which had won 22 straight home games and 14 consecutive playoff games, had hoped to assert itself in the second half after clinging to a 24-20 halftime advantage. After Coastals offense went three-and-out to begin the third quarter, the Bison completed a nine-play, 69-yard drive with Wentzs 2-yard scoring run around right end providing a 31-20 lead. But Ross capped the Chanticleers following possession by diving into the North Dakota State for a 4-yard touchdown and they pulled within 31-26 at the 3:29 mark. Hendersons go-ahead touchdown capped a quick-strike, four-play drive which went 95 yards when Ross had a 48-yard pass to John Israel, Henderson a 32-yard run and Ross a 13-yard pass to Osharmar Abercrombie. The first half featured offensive firepower as North Dakota State took a 24-20 lead at halftime. Crockett opened the scoring with a 70-yard touchdown and Wentz fired touchdowns to Kevin Vaadeland and Luke Albers. But Coastal moved the chains and Devin Brown returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown midway through the second quarter, tying the game at 17-17. Alex Catrons 25-yard field goal on the final play of the half pulled Coastal within 24-20. NEW YORK -- "Super Bowl 50" just looks better than "Super Bowl L." X, V and I are nicely symmetrical, but with the unbalanced L in line for the 2015 season, the NFL decided to scrap the Roman numerals for a year. The championship game in Santa Clara, California, on Feb. 7, 2016, will be known as "Super Bowl 50." The league has been contemplating this eventuality for nearly a decade, ever since the 40th edition ended with XL -- which is not only visually pleasing but seemed an appropriate description of the extravaganza the Super Bowl has become. Starting last April, NFL executives viewed more than 70 potential logos for the 2016 game. They found its hard to build an attractive image around what league vice-president Jaime Weston calls "the lonely L." Using the big 5-0 instead had the added benefit of emphasizing the significance of the Super Bowls 50th iteration. That allows the NFL to celebrate the milestone all season long. "Its a much bolder statement," said Weston, the NFLs VP for brand and creative. In 2017 in Houston, though, the game will revert to "Super Bowl LI." Adding that I to the end squares off the L and makes it more adaptable graphically, Weston said. And the league has no desire to ditch the Roman numerals for good. The NFL first started using them for the fifth Super Bowl in 1971. They have a practical value for a league whose regular season and championship game take place in different calendar years. Then there are the more intangible benefits. "It really does differentiate us," Weston said. The NFL held focus groups before the 40th Super Bowl and found that fans could associate logos from years past with their memories of watching that particular game. Even if they might not remember that X means 10, V is five, I is one and L is 50 -- let alone how to represent 40. A new letter wont come into play until the 90th edition in 2056: Super Bowl XC. Federers streak of nine consecutive quarter-finals at the French Open ended Sunday with a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 fourth-round loss to 18th-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia. "A lot of regrets," Federer said. "I just couldnt kind of figure it out." The 17-time Grand Slam champion had not left Roland Garros so soon since 2004, when he was beaten in the third round by Gustavo Kuerten. After that decade-old setback, though, Federer made at least the quarter-finals at a record 36 consecutive major tournaments, a streak that ended with a second-round loss at Wimbledon last year. Federer also put together record Slam runs of 10 finals and 23 semifinals in a row when he was at his dominant best. Now the 32-year-old Federer has bowed out before the quarter-finals at three of the last four majors. "I think it was the biggest, probably, win of my career," said Gulbis, who most certainly could have dispensed with the word "probably." Addressing spectators who sang Federers first name between points, Gulbis said: "Im sorry I had to win. I know all of you like Roger." The result fit with the topsy-turvy nature of this tournament: Both reigning Australian Open champions, No. 3 Stan Wawrinka and No. 2 Li Na, lost in the first round; No. 1 Serena Williams left in the second round. Gulbis now plays No. 6 Tomas Berdych, who eliminated the last American man, No. 10 John Isner. In another quarter-final, No. 2 Novak Djokovic will face No. 8 Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont. Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and No. 24 Fernando Verdasco set up a fourth-round meeting by finishing off victories in matches suspended Saturday night because of fading light. In womens action, 2012 champion Maria Sharapova ran off the last nine games to come back and beat No. 19 Samantha Stosur 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 for a quarter-final berth against 35th-ranked Garbine Muguruza of Spain, the 20-year-old who stunned Williams last week. No. 18 Eugenie Bouchard, from Montreal, will face No. 14 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in another quarter-final. The fourth-seeded Federers resume includes the 2009 French Open title, and he was a four-time runner-up in Paris to Rafael Nadal. But Federer was hardly in top form Sunday, making 59 unforced errors and getting broken twice while serving for a set. That iincluded at 5-3, 40-15 in the second, when Federer sent an overhead right to Gulbis, who whipped a backhand passing winner.dddddddddddd "I was lucky, I have to say," Gulbis said about that point. "I was really lucky." Said Federer: "Things got tough from then on for, like, a half-hour for me." He lost the last five points of the second-set tiebreaker, then dropped the third set, too. Another key moment came when Gulbis left the court with a trainer to take a medical timeout while trailing 5-2 in the fourth. As he walked out, Gulbis motioned to Federer, as if asking for permission to go. When Gulbis returned, some fans jeered and whistled at him, and he pointed to his lower back as if to say, "Hey, I was injured." At his news conference, Federer alternated between sounding a little perturbed about the lengthy intermission — and resigned to the idea that what Gulbis did was within the rules. "In the past, I guess, its been abused much more than today, but still, what can you tell?" Federer said. "He didnt look hurt in any way. But if you can use it, you know, might as well do it." Gulbis strokes had momentarily gone astray before that break, but afterward, the 25-year-old Gulbis once again displayed the big-hitting tennis that had many marking him as a future star when he was a teenager. He won 10 of the next 12 points, punctuating shots with exhales that sounded like growls. The fifth set was all Gulbis, who hadnt been to the quarter-finals at a major tournament since the 2008 French Open. Hes spoken openly about focusing more on enjoying the nightlife than perfecting his craft, and drew attention last week for saying he wouldnt encourage his younger sisters to pursue professional tennis because a woman "needs to think about family, needs to think about kids." In the concluding set, Gulbis raced to a 3-0 lead, thanks largely to Federer miscues. In the second game, Federer netted backhands and forehands to offer up break points, then pushed a forehand wide to give Gulbis a lead he never relinquished. After that miss, Federer grabbed a ball and swatted it in anger straight up in the air, a rare sign of exasperation from him. "Hes Roger Federer, but he also gets tight, you know," Gulbis said. "Hes probably going to make (that forehand) seven out of 10 (times). Other guys are going to make two out of 10. Mistakes happen." cheap falcons jerseyscheap ravens jerseyscheap bills jerseyscheap bears jerseyscheap bengals jerseyscheap cowboys jerseyscheap lions jerseyscheap texans jerseyscheap colts jerseyscheap jaguars jerseyscheap chiefs jerseyscheap rams jerseyscheap dolphins jerseyscheap vikings jerseyscheap saints jerseyscheap giants jerseyscheap jets jerseyscheap eagles jerseyscheap steelers jerseyscheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '
Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Brice Johnson posted 18 points and 14 rebounds as 15th-ranked North Carolina kept up its strong recent play with a 78-74 victory over Florida State. Marcus Paige added 19 points and Justin Jackson put up 14 in the Tar Heels ninth triumph in their last 10 outings. North Carolina (16-4, 6-1 ACC) will take a five-game win streak into a difficult upcoming stretch against Syracuse, Louisville and No. 2 Virginia. I think we are getting tougher and tougher every day, said Tar Heels center Kennedy Meeks, who finished with 12 points. We have a lot of guys out, so we are just trying to bring it together, really grind it out in practice and focus on what Coach (Roy Williams) is saying. Florida State (10-10, 2-5) hung tough for most of the afternoon, with Xavier Rathan-Mayes career-high 35 points keeping the Seminoles in it, before ultimately being dealt its fourth loss in its last five in ACC play. Though the Tar Heels were in front most of the way, their lead was just 67-63 with under five minutes remaining after Rathan-Mayes knocked down jumpers on consecutive possessions. The teams then traded free throws before North Carolina began to draw clear down the stretch. Jackson tipped in a Paige miss and J.P. Tokoto followed with a successful midrange shot after Rathan-Mayes missed a 3-point try, with the basket extending the lead to 71-63 with 2:57 to go. Florida State came up empty on its next four trips down the court as well, and the margin was 10 when Meeks scored inside for UNC with 46 seconds left. Defensively, we did everything we could to try to keep the ball out of the post, Seminoles head coach Leonard Hamilton said. There were a couple of occasions where they threw it over the top and got some easy buckets. I thought those two things are where we fell short. Rathan-Mayes buried a trio of 3-pointers thereafter, however, with the final one trimming FSUs deficit to 75-72 before Paige helped seal the outcome by making a pair of foul shots with 16 seconds to play. He was a difficult guy for us to guard, Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams said of Rathan-Mayes. Sometimes hed come off the screen and a big guy would be there, and the next time he would refuse a screen and beat a defender back to the basket. The Tar Heels opened up a 21-12 advantage nearing the midway mark of the first half after Paige scored the final five points of a 9-1 run, and the differential was 11 points when Tokotos bucket with five minutes left in the period put North Carolina up by a 30-19 count. Florida State then began to heat up offensively, hitting three straight shots to finish off a 12-3 spurt. The last of those makes, a 3-pointer from Devon Bookert, pulled the Seminoles within 33-31 prior to Jacksons jumper in the final minute that sent North Carolina into the break ahead by four. A 6-0 stretch staked the Tar Heels to a 54-45 lead with under 10 1/2 minutes remaining, and owned a 63-54 edge until another Booker trey ignited a 7-2 FSU flurry. Game Notes Rathan-Mayes previous career high was 26 points, set against the Citadel on Nov. 25 ... Johnson finished 7-of-9 from the field ... Tar Heels guard Nate Britt, questionable coming into the game after he sustained a lacerated lip that required 15 stitches in Wednesdays win at Wake Forest, did play and scored four points in 14 minutes ... If we didnt get any more snow from here on out, we would be fine, Bills Vice-President of Operations Andy Major said Wednesday. Knowing that we have another 1 to 2 feet potentially coming overnight, that just poses another challenge. It usually takes three days to clear a 1-foot snowfall, Major said. The snow removal has begun, and Major hopes to round up 500 people working three shifts around the clock to clear the facility. The team has stayed in constant contact with the NFL, which will have the final say on whether to postpone the game or have it played elsewhere. We are working with the Bills today to determine the status of the stadium, NFL spokesman Michael Signora said in an email to The Associated Press. If a change to the schedule needs to be made, the league will make the decision working closely with the club and local authorities. The weather is supposed to warm by the weekend. The forecast for Saturday calls for a high of 39 and rain. On Sunday, the forecast calls for a high of 46 and partly cloudy skies.Though rare, changing the date or location of a game has happened before. The most notable switch occurred in 2005, when the New Orleans Saints were forced to split their season playing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and San Antonio, Texas, after Hurricane Katrina damaged the Louisiana Superdome. In 2010, the Minnesota Vikings were forced to play their home game against the New York Giants a day later in Detroit after the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodomes roof tore open. The storm forced the Bills to cancel practice Wednesday due to a driving ban in Orchard Park and its surrounding communities. And its unclear how many practices the team can get in before Sunday.Coach Doug Marrone and his staff spent the night at the teams headquarters going over the game plan and staying in contact with players.Us being able to go out and practice is obviously not an option for us, Marrone said. This is very challenging. Its a toughh, tough situation.ddddddddddddhe Bills (5-5) are already coming off an extended break after getting the weekend off since a 22-9 loss at Miami on Thursday night. Its very difficult to put into words exactly whats going on.Marrone, defensive co-ordinator Jim Schwartz and defensive line coach Pepper Johnson found themselves in the thick of the storm while attempting to drive to the stadium Tuesday morning. They required help from a New York State trooper to exit Interstate 90. And couldnt get closer than within 5 miles of the stadium.Marrone did his part by helping push cars out of the snow.As much as 5 feet of snow hit a narrow region of communities south of Buffalo during a lake-effect storm that began Monday night. The Bills describe this is an unprecedented snowfall in their 65-year history. They estimate 220,000 tons of snow that need to be cleared from the stadium and surrounding parking lots. That would be enough to fill the teams practice fieldhouse facility eight times over.Bills players spent much of Tuesday sharing their snow-day experiences on social media.Running back Fred Jackson produced an amusing video of himself playfully tossing his children into a large snow drift.Receiver Marquise Goodwin posted a photo himself standing in the snow shirtless and wearing only sweatpants under the caption: This snow doesnt scare me.And kicker Dan Carpenter proved to be a good neighbour. Roy Noble, 88, told The Buffalo News that he and his 87-year-old wife Lorraine were pleasantly surprised to find Carpenter, who lives next door, shovel a path through 5-foot drifts to ensure the couple was OK.The storm drew attention from around the league.New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin deflected attention from his teams struggles by opening his news conference on Wednesday saying: Good morning. ORLANDO, Fla. -- Trey Burkes last trip to Orlando was a forgettable one. He struggled through several summer league games just weeks after being selected with the No. 9 pick in the NBA draft. This visit was a more successful experience. Burke had a career-high 30 points and eight assists, Gordon Hayward added 15 points and the Utah Jazz held off the Orlando Magic 86-82 on Wednesday night. Orlando had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Jameer Nelsons layup rolled off the rim and was rebounded by Utah with just 3 seconds left. Hayward then hit a pair of free throws. The Jazz snapped a two-game losing streak and extended their win streak over the Magic to six games. Burke, who was passed over by the Magic when they grabbed Victor Oladipo with the No. 2 pick, said he wasnt trying to make any statement. "That wasnt my main goal, but I definitely wanted to come out and be really aggressive today," Burke said. "For me, Im trying to do whatever it takes for the team to win. I saw early on that my shot was falling, that I could get in the paint and get some good looks so I just tried to stay aggressive." Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said he thinks his young team took a big step forward after some rough outings. "I think the experience for this young group of guys goes a long way, to teach them how to finish games and how to stay in there," he said. "Even when we lost our lead there, they came in that fourth quarter and made some big plays for us." The Magic lost for the sixth time in seven home games. They continue their season-long six-game homestand Saturday against Sacramento. Nelson led Orlando with 17 points. Nikola Vucevic had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Tobias Harris finished with 14 points and 10 boards, a season high after he returned recently from an ankle injury. Burke (Michigan) and Oladipo (Indiana) were college rivals, with each getting the better of the other at times. This one went to Burke. Orlando played without leading scorer Arron Afflalo, who was scratched with an illness. Afflalo, who is averaging a career-high 21.6 points, had started every game this season. With Harris starting in his place, the Magic showed for a while that they are more than a just one-man team. They just couldnt figure out a way to slow down Burke. Oladipo guarded Burke on a few possessions, but was off offensively. He had three points on 1-for-12 shooting. "He was just comfortable out there," Oladipo said of Burke. "When hes comfortable, hes very effective." Orlando trailed by six heading into the fourth quarter, but rallied to a 76-69 lead with just under eight minutes to play. But Utah responded with a 9-0 spurt to retake the momentum. The Magic tied it again, but never regained the lead the rest of the way. Harris was 10 for 31 in four games coming into the day. He finished a modest 5 for 14 from the field against the Jazz. But he was a lot more active that he had been in his previous three games. He got involved on the offensive end early on against the Jazz and seemed a lot more comfortable, scoring six in the first quarter. Harris then faltered down the stretch, like so many of his teammates. "There were maybe one or two shots in the first half that we talked about, we thought were forced a little bit," Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. "But besides that, I looked down and they had good shots throughout the course of the night. I dont think our guys were selfish at all." For Utah, Burke said he hopes its effort will be something the Jazz can build on as they continue their five-game road trip. "That shows where this team can be in the future. We have a lot of options," Burke said. "Pretty much everybody out there can put the ball in the basket, and once were playing together, thats when were best with it." NOTES: Burke has scored at least 20 points in four games this season. ... The Jazz have now had three 30-point scorers in their last four games. Authentic Kemba Walker Jersey . Louis against the Blues. The Canucks picked up their second straight victory in the swings opener on Tuesday in Calgary before getting routed in Minnesota last night, 5-1.TORONTO - In 2009, the Detroit Pistons selected Gonzaga product Austin Daye with the 15th overall pick, just ahead of a trio of gifted point guards in Jrue Holiday, Ty Lawson and Jeff Teague. The Pistons had been an Eastern Conference powerhouse, a playoff team for eight consecutive years but they found themselves on the downswing as Joe Dumars and company hoped to tread water, putting off an inevitable rebuild (they havent qualified for the postseason since 2009). Chauncey Billups was traded to Denver the year prior, the Allen Iverson experiment was unsuccessful and short-lived and the team decided to part ways with an aging Rasheed Wallace. A new era was about to begin in Detroit and two of the players that remained from those great Piston teams served as justification for the Daye pick. Like Daye, a 6-foot-11 wing player who weighed in at 192 pounds when he was drafted as a 21-year-old, Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince both came into the league with a similarly thin frame. It was always understood that Daye would need to get stronger, put on some weight and add muscle, but the sustained success of Hamilton and Prince in Detroit proved that the body-type was not an NBA death sentence. "I was always a slender guy," Daye said Saturday, in training camp with the Raptors, his third team in eight months. "A lot of other guys in the league are slender but theyre able to deal with it." Daye has yet to tap into the great potential that many believed he had back in 2009 and the knock on him has always centred on his strength. Signed to a two-year deal at the league minimum (the second year is only partially guaranteed), Daye has an opportunity to revive his career in Toronto; an opportunity he spent the offseason preparing for by addressing the very thing that continues to hold him back. After signing Daye in early August, Masai Ujiri and the Raptors hired Alonzo Freeman - facility director at PSI in Las Vegas - to implement and oversee a strict dietary program and train the 25-year-old forward. Daye credits Freeman and the work they put in for his transformation coming into camp this fall. "All thanks goes to him," Daye said, "for putting the weight on me and just keeping my mind focused and my nutrition very tight and looked upon." It all started with a blood test. "I actually took a blood test and found out some foods that dont really help me gain weight," he said. "Surprisingly they were foods that I eat a lot so I had to make some changes with my diet." The Raptors forward was surprised by how much the test revealed and how muuch of a difference the subsequent adjustments improved his overall conditioning.dddddddddddd. Drinking protein shakes after workouts and staying hydrated - something he wasnt conscious enough of before - helped him in this process. "I feel a lot better," Daye proclaimed. "Its been a long summer and I worked really hard. I can definitely see the results out there, just getting to the basket and taking contact a little better but as far as everything else, I think I did a good job just staying focused on the task at hand and being ready for camp." "He committed to it," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said of Dayes offseason work. "He did a great job with it." The added strength should come in handy as Daye transitions from playing primarily at the three over his first four seasons to coming off the bench as a stretch power forward, where Coach Casey plans to platoon him with sharpshooter Steve Novak. "Austin has every NBA skill," Casey said after practice Saturday. "The only thing hes ever had to work on is his strength and his body to not get knocked off the mark, not to give up offensive rebounds and to be stronger. Thats his biggest challenge as an NBA player because hes one of the best three-point shooters that we have [and] he has a great basketball IQ." While Novaks strengths and weaknesses are well known to Casey and the coaching staff, Daye remains somewhat of an unknown. As a result, and with Novak nursing a sore right thumb, Daye should get an opportunity to prove himself in the preseason. Come the Oct. 30 season opener consistent playing time is far from a guarantee for Daye, as Casey has stated hed like to trim the rotation down to eight or nine players (though it may be a fluid rotation early in the year). To factor into the regular season rotation, hell have to stand out in the final three exhibition games with Casey monitoring his defence, rebounding and ability to stay on the floor (hes committed 13 fouls in 48 preseason minutes). The chance hell be given to play is one of the things that drew him to Toronto in the offseason. He had at least one other notable suitor. "I know Miami was looking at me and thats a team I always played well against," Daye said. "It [would have been] a chance to get a ring but I dont know how much I would have played." "Im sure I could have tried to work my way in and got some quality minutes down there but Im happy with my decision to come here. I think that the decision to come here will help me along with my future. Thats why I made this decision, not for right now but for the future." cheap falcons jerseyscheap ravens jerseyscheap bills jerseyscheap bears jerseyscheap bengals jerseyscheap cowboys jerseyscheap lions jerseyscheap texans jerseyscheap colts jerseyscheap jaguars jerseyscheap chiefs jerseyscheap rams jerseyscheap dolphins jerseyscheap vikings jerseyscheap saints jerseyscheap giants jerseyscheap jets jerseyscheap eagles jerseyscheap steelers jerseyscheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '
The Anaheim Ducks will start rookie goalie John Gibson again in Mondays Game 5 against the visiting Los Angeles Kings. Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau made the announcement on Sunday, a day after Gibson made 28 saves in his playoff debut in a 2-0, Game 4 victory. The second-round series between the Southern California rivals is tied at two games each.
