SAN FRANCISCO - The Colorado Rockies arent exactly sprinting toward the finish line. If anything, its been a slow, painful crawl down the stretch for manager Walt Weisss ballclub — and not even a stellar start by Jhoulys Chacin could stop the free fall. Chacin allowed one run over seven innings but Colorados bullpen gave up two runs, including Brandon Belts RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 10th, and the Rockies lost to the San Francisco Giants 3-2 on Monday night. "Chacin is putting together a great run and a great season," Weiss said. "His two-seamer is real good. His change-up has turned into a really good pitch for him ... (and) he can throw a slider to right-handers. Hes got all three working." D.J. LeMahieu singled and doubled to extend his career-high hitting streak to 11 games, and Nolan Arenado scored from second base on an infield groundout for the Rockies. It wasnt enough to prevent Colorado from falling to 0-4 on its six-game trip. San Francisco trailed most of the game until Belts RBI double in the eighth tied it at 2. Belt drove in the game-winner in the 10th after Angel Pagan hit a one-out single off reliever Adam Ottavino (1-3) and took third on Marco Scutaros single. Belt hit a 1-2 pitch over the head of left fielder Charlie Culberson for his second game-ending hit this season. "The last pitch, I didnt execute," Ottavino said. "I was trying to come up and in and I left it away. It comes with the territory. We really wanted this one and it stinks that we didnt get it." Despite beating Colorado, the defending World Series champions were eliminated from contention in the NL West earlier in the evening when the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks. Buster Posey hit his 15th home run of the season for San Francisco, which was kept in check offensively most of the game by Chacin. Chacin struck out five and walked one over seven innings, lowering his ERA in 12 starts on the road to 2.10. The right-hander retired 16 of the final 18 he faced and left with a 2-1 lead. Colorados bullpen couldnt make it hold up. Pagan reached on a one-out infield single off Matt Belisle in the eighth and took second when Arenados throw from third sailed past first base for an error. After Scutaros groundout moved Pagan to third, Belt doubled to right to drive in Pagan with the tying run. The Rockies scored their first run after a defensive breakdown by the Giants. Arenado doubled in the second and was headed for third on Yorvit Torrealbas slow roller between the mound and first base when he noticed no one covering home. Arenado quickly scampered home, and with no one covering, San Francisco first baseman Belts throw sailed to the backstop. After Poseys homer tied it, the Rockies made their own defensive gaffe. As fog drifted over the waterfront ballpark, Pablo Sandoval lofted a high fly ball to left centre. Colorados Corey Dickerson ran toward the warning track but inexplicably stopped and let the ball drop in as Sandoval raced to second with a double. Colorado went up 2-1 on Troy Tulowitzkis RBI single in third. NOTES: LeMahieu is batting .391 (18 for 46) during his streak. ... Colorado needs to win its final two games in San Francisco to secure the season series between the division rivals. Harrison Barnes Jersey . "This doesnt end anything," he said. Today, their baseball playing sons were reportedly traded for each other. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Cubs dealt minor league outfield Trevor Gretzky to the Angels for catcher Matt Scioscia.Lakeland, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Detroit Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer has declined a long-term contract offer from the club. Scherzer avoided arbitration in January, agreeing to a one-year deal that is reportedly worth $15.25 million. The Cy Young winner can become a free agent after the 2014 season. Talks with agent Scott Boras for a long-term deal continued through the spring, but were unsuccessful and the Tigers said Sunday that further discussions would not take place during the season. "The Detroit Tigers have made a substantial, long-term contract extension offer to Max Scherzer that would have placed him among the highest paid pitchers in baseball, and the offer was rejected," the Tigers said in a statement. Scherzer was 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA and 240 strikeouts in 32 starts with the Tigers last year. He became the second Tiger in three years to capture the Cy Young, following 2011 winner Justin Verlander, who agreed to a five-year extension with a vesting option for 2020 last spring. "As we have reiterated,, it has been the organizations intent to extend Maxs contract and keep him in a Tigers uniform well beyond the 2014 season," the Tigers statement continued.dddddddddddd "While this offer would have accomplished that, the ballclubs focus remains on the start of the upcoming season, and competing for a world championship. Moving forward there will be no further in-season negotiation and the organization will refrain from commenting on this matter." Scherzer will be entering his fifth year with the Tigers, who acquired him from Arizona as part of a three-team deal that sent Curtis Granderson to the New York Yankees before the 2010 season. The 29-year-old right-hander has been a double-digit winner in each of his four seasons with Detroit and has a record of 64-30 with a 3.62 ERA in 128 starts as a Tiger. He was 9-15 with a 3.86 ERA in two years for Arizona. Overall, Scherzer owns a career mark of 73-45 with a 3.67 ERA and has 1,069 strikeouts in 1,019 innings in 174 games, all but nine of which have been starts. BERKELEY, Calif. -- Every time Arizona had been challenged this season, the Wildcats survived by making big plays and big shots in the closing moments of big games. They finally found out what it feels like to be on other end of a celebration. Justin Cobbs hit a step-back jumper with 0.9 seconds left, and California stunned No. 1 Arizona 60-58 on Saturday night to hand the Wildcats their first loss of the season. "Wed always found a way to be on the positive end of it," Wildcats coach Sean Miller said. "Tonight in that same moment, we didnt make the shots and we didnt get the big stop." Cobbs, who scored Cals final 12 points, dribbled to his left and beat Nick Johnson before pulling up in front of an oncoming defender to sink the winning shot that sent a raucous, gold-shirt wearing crowd at Haas Pavilion spilling onto the court. Not realizing a timeout had been called, Cal coach Mike Montgomery and security had to frantically usher fans away before the final play. Gabe Yorks full-court pass was knocked down to give the Bears (15-7, 6-3 Pac-12) their first victory over a top-ranked opponent since Jan. 30, 1994, when they beat UCLA 85-70 at the Oakland Coliseum. "I think its just good for Cal, and I think its good for the university and the students to come out and have that kind of excitement," Montgomery said. "I think one of the things youre trying to generate is them enjoying the game, enjoying the experience, and I think there was some of that tonight." Arizona (21-1, 8-1), which had won a school-record 21 straight games after surviving to beat Stanford 60-57 on Wednesday night, was one of just three unbeaten teams left in Division I. Now only second-ranked Syracuse (21-0), which outlasted No. 17 Duke 91-89 in overtime Saturday, and No. 4 Wichita State (23-0) remain. Even worse for the Wildcats, Miller said starting forward Brandon Ashley appeared to have broken his right foot going for a rebound in the opening minutes. He was scheduled to have an X-ray when the team gets back in Tucson, Miller said. Cobbs finished with 19 points and seven assists, David Kravish had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Richard Solomon scored 12 points to propel Cal to one of the biggest wins in school history. The Bears improved to 3-24 against teams ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press poll, and they had never beaten a top-ranked team in Berkeley. "Just a lot of fun," Solomon said. Kaleb Tarczewski scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, and T.J. McConnell scored 13 points for the Wildcats, who shot just 32.3 per cent from the floor. Cal, which shot 44.6 per cent, held Johnson -- Arizonas star guard -- to just 4 points on 1-of-14 shooting. "Because weve been in this situation so many times, were really comfortable. We werent worried at all. We were ramped up," Tarczewski said. "Cobbs made a really, really tough shot." The game attracted quite an audience, too. There were 21 scouts from 14 different NBA teams in attendance. Former Wildcats coach Lute Olson sat in the stands behind Arizonas bench, and Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin -- a Cal alum -- also supported his Bears. "No. 1 brings out everybody," Montgomery said. The Wildcats rallied from nine points down in the first half and eight in the second to set up a furious finish. Arizona took the lead twice in the final minutes, and twice Cobbs came back with a tying score -- first on a runner in the lane and then on a pair of free throws. On the final sequence, Johnson missed a short jumper in the lane and Cal corralled the rebound. Cobbs let the clock tick down, then beat Johnson for a shot that will long be remembered in Berkeley. Fans had to be pushed back off the court in a weird and wild scene, with the public address announcer screaming for them to get back. The Bears soon gave them reason to come back and celebrate. "Honestly I was getting claustrophobic," Cobbs said, laughing. "I couldnt breathe." The Bears kept Arizonas big front line at bay from the start. Solomon made his first six shots, including a short jumper that put the Bears ahead 28-19 late with 5:18 remaining in the first half. Arizona answered back by converting steals into easy baskets, closing the half on a 10-2 run to cut Cals lead to 30-29. It was the seventh time Arizona had trailed at the half this season. Both teams had to overcome adversity after the break. Johnson seemed to be bothered by an injury to his left hand -- repeatedly shaking his wrist after shots and grimacing -- and Solomon was stuck in foul trouble. In the end, Cal just made one more play than Arizona. "We made plays to put us in that position," McConnell said. "But Cobbs made a good shot down the stretch." Gary Harris College Jersey . Andrew Cogliano scored the go-ahead goal at 14:41 as Anaheim scored twice in the third period in a 3-2 victory over the resilient Flames. "Thats one of the biggest two points of the season, for sure," said Cogliano. "To come back from behind in the third period, it shows where were going as a team and I think its a big statement win for us." Stephane Robidas shot from the blue-line was kicked out by Karri Ramo but the puck went right to Cogliano at the face-off circle, who buried his 21st of the season. "Right place at the right time. It landed right on my stick. When I saw the net, no better feeling," said Cogliano, who put a shot off the post just minutes earlier. "Those are the goals were trying to score, especially myself. Getting to the net, getting some rebounds." Finishing it off wasnt easy, however. The Flames poured on the pressure in the final minute with the goalie pulled. Mike Cammalleris blast came the closest to getting past Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller, but the Ducks hung on. "Its one of those things where theyre just throwing everything at the net and youre trying to find the puck somehow. I found it once or twice there so we could at least get a whistle," said Hiller, who had 32 saves. It was a nice bounce-back game for him after getting chased less than 12 minutes into the last start at the Scotiabank Saddledome after yielding three goals on five shots. "The whole team was upset with what happened last time. I didnt feel I played terribly or whatever but those things happen and its nice if you get a chance pretty quick to do better," said Hiller. "Definitely happy with the way we responded and the way I responded. I thought we played a pretty good road game." Nick Bonino and Mathieu Perreault also scored for Anaheim (47-18-7), which kicks off a three-game road trip to Western Canada with its sixth road win in its last eight games away from the Honda Center. The win moves the Ducks to within two points of the San Jose Sharks and the lead in the Pacific Division. Anaheim still holds two games in hand. Hiller says winning the division is definitely a priority. "It would be great to be up there because if youre second, you have a good chance of playing L.A. in the first round which would be a tough match-up," Hiller said. Brian McGrattan and Jiri Hudler scored for Calgary (30-36-7). Rookie defenceman Tyler Wotherspoon had an assist to give the 21-year-old points inn his last three games.dddddddddddd "Thats the way you learn sometimes, too. You learn from tough losses," said McGrattan, who was playing his 300th NHL game. "Our group hasnt given up all year. Were in every game and work our butts off right until the end and thats a good sign." Its the Flames league-leading 44th one-goal game, one shy of the franchise record set in 2005-06. "If you look at the young guys throughout the year, how theyre showing up against these teams late in the year when were playing San Jose, L.A., Anaheim — were playing all these top teams down the stretch and were giving them a run for the money every night. Thats a lot to build off of as a group and its a lot to learn from," said McGrattan. Trailing 2-1 headed to the third period, the Ducks tied it at 5:32 on Perreaults 16th goal. "We fought hard in the third and got a couple bounces our way and finally we were able to put it in and win the game," said Perreault, who extended his point streak to six games (four goals, two assists). "Coming down the stretch, we play a couple teams that are already out of the playoffs. We have to take advantage of those games." Trailing 1-0 after the first period, the Flames scored twice in the second to take the lead. The tying goal, which bounced off Kevin Westgarths glove in front and then into the net off of McGrattans hip was the rugged wingers fourth goal and 10th of his career. Calgary took a 2-1 lead with 26 seconds left in the second when a pretty fake shot then pass from Ladislav Smid set up Hudler. "Its a good effort. We know we can play with every team in the league but its not good enough — a good effort, we have to get results too. Thats the business of hockey," said Ramo, who had won his previous five decisions. Ramo, who had 31 stops, had his record fall to 13-11-4. Hiller improves to 29-11-6. "They paid the price and when they came to the net, they had a lot of shots and a lot of traffic with them," said Ramo. "They were into the game today, unlike the last game. I think they had a chip on their shoulders when they came here today." Notes: On the eve of the one-year anniversary of the trade of Jarome Iginla to Pittsburgh, the two players they received in return - LW Kenny Agostino and RW Ben Hanowski, were both healthy scratches for the Flames... Calgary LW TJ Galiardi drew back in after missing the past two games... Not in the line-up for Anaheim were D Francois Beauchemin, C Daniel Winnik and LW Matt Beleskey... LISBON, Portugal -- Portugal coach Paulo Bento has quit because of poor results, including a 1-0 shock defeat against Albania. Bentos departure was by mutual agreement, and his replacement would be announced soon, the Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement on Thursday without elaborating. Bento took charge four years ago and steered Portugal to the 2012 European Championship semifinals. But at the World Cup in Brazil, the Portuguese disappointed. They exited in the first round, and last Sunday lost to visiting Albania in their first qualifier for Euro 2016. Portuguese fans jeered and waved white handkerchiefs after the Albania upset, and Bento was under fierce pressure to quit. Star striker Cristiano Ronaldo wasnt fully fit at the World Cup and sat out the Albania match. His absence left the Portuguese wanting in front of goal and looking average. Portugals next match in its Euro 2016 qualifying campaign is against Denmark on Oct. 14. Bento, aged 45 and a former Portugal midfielder, was one of Europes most inexperienced national coaches when he replaced Carlos Queiroz in September 2010, having coached only Sporting Lisbon in a top flight. Kids outside the Coverciano complex were responsible for the chants, and Balotelli appeared visibly disturbed. The training session was open to media, and Balotelli could be heard saying as he ran by reporters, "Only in Rome and Florence are they that stupid." While most of the fans cheered for Balotelli, police approached the area where the chants came from and they quickly ended. Balotelli was born in Sicily to Ghanaian immigrants and brought up by an Italian foster family. He has faced racist chants throughout his professional career. "Its unbelievable that in 2014 we still hhave this form of racism," Balotellis fellow forward, Ciro Immobile, said.dddddddddddd "Its not great for the nation. We represent Italy." Immobile, from the Naples area, noted how insulting anti-Naples chants have pervaded Serie A stadiums recently. "When I hear that it saddens me, because I have a lot of pride in my city," Immobile said. Balotelli was also the focus of much speculation on racist abuse before the 2012 European Championship, and UEFA placed spotters inside stadiums, resulting in fan behaviour by Spain and Croatia being sanctioned. "Theres three main things we need to do," Brees began. "Were going to change up the Gatorade flavour, we feel good about that. Were going to change our travel sweats. Were going to change, at the hotel, the beefy mac (and cheese) recipe the night before, just kind of give it a little extra kick. We feel like those three things are going to help pull us through." For one last time this season, Brees and the Saints proved how tough they are to hang with in the Big Easy, clinching an NFC wild-card spot Sunday with a 42-17 rout of the downtrodden Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brees was his usual prolific self, passing for four touchdowns and even running for a score as New Orleans (11-5) concluded the regular season 8-0 at home. But the Saints went 3-5 on the road this season, and they had little time to celebrate their widely anticipated triumph over the Bucs before fielding questions about what they can do to change their fortunes outside the Superdome. "Were going to be told all week long that we cant win on the road," right tackle Zack Strief said. "We all acknowledge why people say that, and yet, the other games dont matter -- not anymore." If the Saints can indeed summon Superdome-like performances in the coming weeks, theyll be a dangerous No. 6 seed. New Orleans opens the playoffs Saturday night at NFC East champion Philadelphia. Three of Brees scoring strikes against Tampa Bay went longer than 40 yards -- 76 to Kenny Stills, 44 to Lance Moore and 41 to Robert Meachem. Brees passed for 381 yards, eclipsing 5,000 yards in a season for an unprecedented fourth time. He finished the season with 5,162 yards to go with 39 touchdowns. "We did a lot of things well today at time when we needed to," Saints coach Sean Payton said. "Im proud of how they finished. ... Its hard to get 11 wins in this league." Brees other TD was a 10-yard pass to tight end Jimmy Graham. Mike Glennon passed for 219 yards and two TDs for Tampa Bay (4-12). With doubts swirling about the future of second-year Bucs coach Greg Schiano, Tampa Bay cllosed the season with losses in its last three games, and four of its last five.dddddddddddd "Any time you win only four games, there are definitely going to be some type of changes," right tackle Demar Dotson said. "Upstairs, downstairs-- I dont know what its going to be." The Saints had lost three of their previous four games to set up a season finale they needed to win to assure themselves of a playoff spot. They got back to the post-season for the fourth time in five seasons, the lone exception being 2012, when Payton was suspended the entire season in connection with the NFLs bounty probe. "Obviously, Seans a huge part of" the Saints return to the playoffs, Brees said. "Four out of five years, winning an average of 12 games in every one of those (playoff) years. Thats a big deal." Schiano, meanwhile, coached like he had nothing to lose, trying a fake field goal, which failed, and going for it three times on fourth down, converting one. In the end, his team was overmatched, outgained 468 yards to 290. Asked about his future, Schiano said: "I dont think I have to say anything. Thats not being smug. I come in and do my job the best that I can. Thats other peoples decision." Schiano did call a successful flea-flicker on which Glennon found Tiquan Underwood for a 48-yard score to tie it at 7. Glennon was also intercepted by Keenan Lewis, setting up Brees 9-yard touchdown run in the second half. Pierre Thomas provided New Orleans other second-half score on an 8-yard run. Brees was 17 of 21 for 321 yards in the first half, when he threw all of his scoring passes and had a maximum 158.3 passer rating. His final line was 24 of 31 for 381 yards, no interceptions and a rating of 157.4. Brees went over the 5,000-yard mark in style, hitting Meachem deep down the sideline to make it 21-7. Glennons 1-yard pass to Tim Wright in the corner of the end zone cut it to 21-14, but Stills score made it 28-14, and the Bucs did not threaten again. Notes: Lewis interception was his fourth. ... Japan sealed its victory over Canada in the first-round Davis Cup tie after Nishikori downed an ailing Dancevic 6-2, 1-0.ST. LOUIS -- Jeff Fisher has never been afraid to buck a trend, draft a troubled player or grant a second chance. The coach of the Rams stuck with Adam "Pacman" Jones and Kenny Britt when he was at Tennessee, despite their off-field problems. Britt is now reunited with Fisher in St. Louis. Fisher recently rehired Gregg Williams, the defensive co-ordinator who was given a one-year suspension by the league for the bounty scandal with the Saints. It was not a surprise that it was Fisher who helped Michael Sam make history as the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team. "He is an amazing leader, and even better, hes a better man," said Wade Davis, the head of an advocacy group for lesbian and gay athletes. Davis currently is doing some work with the NFL. "He looks at everything from all angles and hes not afraid to take on a challenge." The 56-year-old Fisher deflects any praise for being a trailblazer, insisting it was simply a football decision to upgrade one of the NFLs top pass rushes by taking Sam at No. 249. "In our world, nobodys going to agree with what you do 100 per cent of the time because everybody has opinions, and thats fine," Fisher said. "Im concerned about whats going on in the building, with the staff and players, the direction were headed. Thats always been the case." At least on the field, Fisher can relate to the challenge for Sam. He also was a seventh-round pick, the fourth wheel of a star-studded Southern California secondary that featured Ronnie Lott, Dennis Smith and Joey Browner. He then carved out a career playing under Mike Ditka for a Super Bowl winner in Chicago and is entering his 19th season as an NFL head coach. Lott, a Hall of Famer, recalls Fisher smoothly making the switch from wide receiver to cornerback. "To me, its easy to play wide receiver because you know where youre going," Lott said. "Having to react, respond and do it with confidence and knowing youre not going to win every play, thats the mindset on defence. The determination he had then has stayed with him." Not long after Sam came out in February, Fisher said hed have no problem having him on the team, that this was an age of diversity. Turns out it wasnt just talk. Several picks before the Rams took Sam, Fisheer broached the subject with owner Stan Kroenke and general manager Les Snead.dddddddddddd Ditka said he wasnt surprised it was Fisher who stepped up when every other team was backing away from Sam. Ditka, who once traded all his draft picks to land Ricky Williams, called it a "pretty gutsy move." Players have fallen in lockstep with their coach on the question of picking Sam. Defensive end Chris Long called it a "football move" and so did linebacker James Laurinaitis. "I dont think it was courageous," Laurinaitis said. "I think its a calculated move by the organization. ... If you have the opportunity to draft a guy that you think is extremely productive and maybe you had a higher grade on him than where he is, you go ahead and take that. I think football-wise, it was a very smart decision." Fisher wouldnt say how far Sam slid on the Rams draft board. The coach joked that divulging that information might affect Sams rookie contract. Titans broadcaster Thom Abraham remembers Fisher in 2009 after Tennessees 0-6 start removing his sport coat, tie and shirt at the podium of a civic function to reveal a Peyton Manning jersey underneath. The punch line: "I just wanted to know what it felt like to be a winner." "Picking Sam did not surprise me one bit," Abraham said of Fisher. "Hes confident in his ability to be out front, and almost represent the NFL." Sam has had several off-season workouts and more practices are on tap this week with the veterans. Long said Sam was working hard and former Missouri teammate, receiver T.J. Moe, said the team viewed Sam simply as someone trying to make it in the NFL. "He is on the team. Theres a 90-man roster, it doesnt go 89 and then Michael Sams over there, this is the gay team, this is the straight team," Moe said. "Michael Sam is on this team and hes treated just like anybody else." And if Sam struggles, nobody that knows Fisher well doubts the coach will have any problem cutting him loose. "He doesnt like doing that part of it," said Brad Hopkins, a former Pro Bowl offensive tackle who played his entire NFL career under Fisher. "But he knows it has to be done, and that you cant make everybody happy." BRASILIA, Brazil - Five-time world player of the year Marta scored three goals to lead Brazil to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the U.S. womens soccer team in the International Tournament of Brasilia on Sunday.Carli Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe scored a goal each in the first 10 minutes to give the U.S. an early lead, but Marta netted in the 19th, 55th and 66th minutes to guarantee the hosts a spot in the final of the four-team competition. Those early goals could have been costly, we cant let those mistakes happen again, Marta said. Im glad that I was able to take advantage of the chances that I had. It wasnt a good start but we fought hard until the end and got the result that we needed against a very good team. The match brought together Marta and American playmaker Abby Wambach, two of the candidates for this years world player of the year award. It feels good to win a match like this, knowing that I was going against Wambach, Marta said.Brazil reached six points from two matches, while the United States remained on one. China, which routed Argentina 6-0 earlier Sunday, also has four points. Argentina has zero. The top two teams will meet for the title on Dec. 21. The other two nations will play for third place. The U.S. needs to beat Argentina by several goals in the last round on Wednesday and hope that China loses to Brazil.Brazil opened with a 4-0 win over Argentina and the U.S. drew China 1-1.The Americans took advantage of Brazils defensive mistakes to take the lead at the Mane Garrincha Stadium in the nations capital. After a corner by Rapinoe from the right side, the ball was headed toward Lloyd in front of the net and she turned for an easy goal in the sixth minute.Rapinoe then found the net with a shot from outside the penalty area in the 10th. She seemed set to make a cross but the ball went straight toward the net, with Brazil goalkeeper Luciana unable to make the stop.Marta put Brazil back in the game after one of her trademark runs through the middle of the defence, entering the area and firing a shot past U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo.Martas second goal came after she cleared two defenders at the top of the area and fired a left-footed shot into the far corner. The winner was a low shot from outside the area that found the near corner. Solo was near the ball but couldnt make the stop as she dived to her left. The Americans had two great chances to equalize in second-half injury time. Lloyds free kick was saved by goalkeeper Luciana, and Christen Press shot from outside the area hit the far post in the final seconds. Cousins shot 10-of-14 from the floor and made 10 of his 11 free throws for the Kings, winners in four straight after opening the season with a home loss to Golden State. The Atlanta Braves remain the top team in the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers. The Rangers climbed, from seven to three, getting third baseman Adrian Beltre and left-handed starter Matt Harrison off the DL. Stellar pitching has lifted the Kansas City Royals from 14 to eight, while surprisingly potent bats have raised the White Sox from 16 to nine. Cole Hamels returned to the Philadelphia Phillies rotation, helping them move from 17 to 10, while the San Francisco Giants are up from 19 to 13 despite their pitching struggles, and the New York Mets, with solid starting pitching, have jumped from 27 to 16. Heading the other way, the L.A. Angels of Anaheim dip from nine to 14, in part due to both starting corner outfielders being hurt. The Toronto Blue Jays snapped a four-game losing streak Sunday, but they still drop from 12 to 17. After getting swept out of Los Angeles, the Cincinnati Reds fall from 13 to 20, the Miami Marlins go from 15 to 21, Tampa Bay Rays crash from 10 to 23 and the San Diego Padres go from 18 to 25. Wholesale Magic Jerseys .Y. - Matt Harvey wants to make sure hes on the mound in late October — if the New York Mets get there for the first time since 2006.ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Wes Welker celebrated Labor Day by practicing for the first time since sustaining a concussion on Aug. 23. That meant Peyton Manning had his front-line offence intact as the Denver Broncos began preparations in earnest for their opener against his former team, the Indianapolis Colts, on Sunday night. Welker donned his up-sized helmet and ran short routes during the 20-minute viewing period open to the media at the start of practice, He added a few minutes of extra work with rookie Cody Latimer afterward. With injury reports not required until Wednesday, coach John Fox was coy when asked how much work Welker did in between. "Hes still in the (concussion) protocol. Hes still exercising. I feel good about his progress. Well keep you posted," Fox said. Welker declined to talk with reporters on his way inside team headquarters after practice, saying he had to rush to a team function. His concussion in a preseason game against the Houston Texans was his third since Nov. 17. In a sign that his latest head injury wasnt as serious as last years pair of concussions in a three-week span, Welker ran a few routes in a pregame workout for starters who didnt play in the exhibition finale at Dallas on Thursday night. Welkers return to action leaves the Broncos with just two key players sidelined: linebacker Danny Trevathan (leg) and kicker Matt Prater (suspension). Key backups Ronnie Hillman and Kayvon Webster were limited in the early portion of practice four days after falling ill during the Broncos exhibition finale at Dallas. Welkers return to the lineup would allow the Broncos to keep burner Emmanuel Sanders on the outside and available to stretch the field by going deep along with Demaryius Thomas. Welker caught 73 passes for 778 yards and a career-high 10 TDs last season despite missing most of the final month. He returned for the playoffs and grabbed 18 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown. His latest head injury came when he tried to duck following a catch over the middle and absorbed a helmet hit by D.J. Swearinger that sent his head recoiling off the ground. That drew a 15--yard penalty for Swearinger and the wrath of Manning.dddddddddddd The quarterback raced up to say some choice words to the swaggering safety after throwing a long TD pass to Sanders on the next play. The five-time MVP was whistled for the first taunting penalty of his career and was fined $8,268, money Manning called well spent. The NFL, meanwhile, deemed Swearingers hit legal. Mannings feistiness further galvanized the Broncos, who are trying to become an edgier team in their quest to get back to the Super Bowl and win it this time. Several starters who skipped the Super Bowl while rehabbing from injuries are back, including Mannings blindside protector, Ryan Clady, and defenders Von Miller, Chris Harris Jr., Rahim Moore, Derek Wolfe, Quinton Carter and Quanterus Smith. At the top of GM John Elways to-do list following Denvers dud against Seattle was to toughen up his defence -- yes, sort of like the Seahawks. So, he added DeMarcus Ware, T.J. Ward and Aqib Talib in free agency and Bradley Roby in the draft. Only three defenders who started in the Super Bowl are still starters seven months later: tackles Terrance Knighton and Sylvester Williams, and linebacker Nate Irving. Among Elways toughest cuts last weekend were defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson and safety Duke Ihenacho, who was snatched up by Washington. "Its a situation you want to be in, having to make a lot of tough decisions," Elway said. "This is by far the deepest team since Ive been here and the toughest decisions weve had since Ive been here." This should also be the toughest team hes had in Denver. And not just on defence. The offence has a new edge to it, too, as evidenced by Mannings feistiness. "Thats how we are," Talib said. "He was defending his teammate. Thats what hes about -- all of us." NOTES: Five Broncos were voted captains by their peers Monday: Manning, Thomas, Ware, Knighton and David Bruton. ... Scotlands Greg Laidlaw made one of two penalty kicks and all three conversions, and Stuart Hogg added a try in the second half. "The most important thing to come out of the game is that we did not get scored against," Laidlaw said.SAN ANTONIO -- Doug McDermott scored in bunches and Ethan Wragge delivered the critical 3-pointers. Together they kept Creighton marching on, right back where theyd promised theyd be. McDermott scored 30 points and Wragge made three huge momentum-changing shots in the second half, sending No. 3 seed Creighton to a tough 76-66 win over No. 14 Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday in the West Regional. And with the win, the Bluejays advance to the third round the NCAA tournament, the very spot theyve been forced out the last two years. "It feels great to be back," McDermott said. "This is what I came back for." It certainly didnt come easy. McDermott had a double-double by halftime but went scoreless for nearly 14 minutes of the second half, leaving it to Wragges long shots to bail out the Bluejays from a potential upset by Ragin Cajuns, who attacked Creighton (27-7) with fearless defence and rebounding. Sun Belt tournament champion Louisiana-Lafayette (23-12) led 50-48 before Wragge struck from long range to spark Creightons push that finally put it away. "We got away with one today," McDermott said. "We have a veteran team and showed that down the stretch." The win also means the Creighton family stays together on the court for a few more days at least. McDermott opted against going to the NBA after last season to play one more year with his father, Creighton coach Greg McDermott. Everything is paying off so far. Dougs senior season has been nothing short of individually spectacular as the nations leading scorer is a favourite for just about every national player of the year award. Hes also now scored at least 30 points in four of Creightons last five games. The question is, just how far can he carry the Bluejays through the next few weeks before his college career is finally over? Louisiana-Lafayette hadnt been to the NCAA tournament since 2000 and certainly werent intimidated by McDermott. Junior guard Elfrid Payton scored 24 points and took the lead in defending him, a tenacious effort that stifled Creightons star for much of the second hallf.dddddddddddd "Coming into the game we felt like it was in reach. From the opening tip we got on a good run, took the lead," Payton said. "I think I did a good job keeping of him uncomfortable." McDermott finally put the dagger in the game with a long 3-pointer with 2:03 to play that put Creighton ahead 71-64. As soon as the final buzzer sounded, he clapped his hands, exhaled and high-fived Wragge under the basket. "A lot of crazy things have happened in this tournament," Greg McDermott said. "You have to survive and advance." Ottawa guard Jahenns Manigat added six points and three assists for Creighton. Creighton looked tight, perhaps because of the pressure to push (or ride) McDermott as far as they can go. The Bluejays, one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country, missed their first six attempts from long range and struggled to get the ball to McDermott on some of his quick cuts to the basket. McDermott did whatever he could, slipping into seams for layups and gathering 10 first half rebounds, to keep the Bluejays going. He scored nine in a row in one burst but just as often was left wanting the ball when teammates couldnt find him with the quick pass when he was open. Louisiana-Lafayettes Shawn Long blocked a McDermott shot, but sent the ball so fall it fell right to Creighton guard Austin Chatman for a 3-pointer. The Ragin Cajuns answered with Paytons 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut Creightons lead to 39-33 at halftime. The block was the statement that Louisiana-Lafayette had no plans to step aside. The Ragin Cajuns stayed aggressive and took their first lead of the second half at 48-46 when 6-foot-6, 325-pound Center J.J. Davenport posted up before hitting a soft fall away jumper with just under 13 minutes to play. Wragge struggled to find his stroke until popping three in a row. His last one put Creighton up by six before Chatman converted a 3-point play and McDermott closed it out. "We lost Wragge," Louisiana-Lafayette coach Bob Marlin said. LAS VEGAS -- Chris Weidman accepted his UFC middleweight title belt with a grimace and a furtive look over his shoulder. Anderson Silva writhed and screamed on the canvas behind him, his left leg grotesquely broken by a kick to Weidmans knee. The champ couldnt celebrate after the UFCs year-end show ended with a stark reminder of the brutality at the core of this flashy, fast-growing sport. Weidman defended his title when Silva broke his shin on a kick to Weidmans knee in the second round Saturday night, ending UFC 168 with a horrific injury. While Weidman (11-0) awkwardly acknowledged his victory, the MGM Grand Garden crowd watched with reverence and horror as medical personnel tended to Silva (33-6), whose shin bent to a 90-degree angle after Weidman blocked his kick 1:16 into the round. "Theres no real excitement in a fight finishing like that, because you never want to see anyone get hurt like that," Weidman said after his second straight win over the long-reigning champion. Weidman, who earned his belt with an upset victory in July, also dominated the first round of the rematch, pinning Silva to the mat and punishing him with blows. In the second, Weidman used his knee to stop Silvas kick with perfect mixed martial arts technique, never anticipating the result. "I did work on checking kicks," Weidman said. "I figured if I (caught) him on my knee, it could really hurt him. Crazy how this happened." Ronda Rousey also retained her bantamweight title on arguably the UFCs most anticipated show of the year, submitting Miesha Tate with a third-round arm bar. Rousey then walked away from her bitter rivals offer of a post-fight handshake, earning ferocious boos from the Vegas fight crowd. But Rouseys questionable sportsmanship was dwarfed by the unquestionably awful finish to the main event. Although the injury happened too quickly to be seen by most naked eyes in Las Vegas, the sound of Silvas cracking shin could be heard at cageside. Thousands of fans cringed and moaned when the replay was shown on the arenas big screens. "I knew coming into the fight that what he could hurt me most with was the leg kicks," Weidman said. "We trained checking the kick a lot. The idea is to pull your leg and for their shin to land at the knee. Thats exactly what I did, and I felt his leg go right away." Referee Herb Dean waved off the fight when Silva fell back, clutching his leg with both hands. Silva left the octagon strapped to a stretcher with a brace on his leg, screaming in pain. With his belt back around his waist, Weidman paid tribute to the injured ex-champion. "Hes still known as the greatest fighter of all time," Weidman said. Silvas nearly seven-year reign atop the middleweight division ended nearly six months ago when Weidman stopped the preening, posturing champion with a left hook at UFC 162. With two straight wins, the former Hofstra wrestler has firmly ended Silvas reign. The injury in the rematch conceivably could end the 38-year-old Brazilians MMA career. The show was heavy on violent finishes. Heavyweight Travis Browne knocked out veteran Josh Barnett in the first round with a series of elbows to the head, earning the third straight early stoppage on the pay-per-view portion of the card. Before the unsettling main event, Rousey (8-0) got the biggest test of her ascendant career. Rousey had never seen the second round of an MMA fight, but Tate tested the champion with striking and tenacity. Although Rousey repeatedly tossed Tate (13-5) to the canvas and pounded on her, Rousey couldnt finish until getting her weary opponent into her patented arm bar -- the submission move she has used to end each of her eight professional fights. "I respect Miesha very much as a competitor," said Rousey, who feels Tate insulted her family. "But I cant respect a fighter who did what she did, and I cannot shake her hand because of it." Tate landed plenty of strikes to Rouseys head, particularly during a thrilling first round in which she tested Rouseys chin. Rousey gradually wore down Tate and finally finished her, violently bending her elbow and forcing Tate to tap out. "Going more than one round was a good experience," Rousey said. "I needed that experience in the octagon, and as my mom said, better to get it in a win than in a loss." But when Tate attempted to shake her hand, Rousey slowly rose and walked away. The crowd booed vociferously when the replay of the snub was shown in slow motion, but Rousey didnt apologize. Nearly two years ago, Rousey defeated Tate by first-round arm bar to claim Tates Strikeforce title, cementing her meteoric rise from the U.S. Olympic judo team to the apex of MMA. Rousey and Tate have made no secret of their distaste since that bout, further stoked by their combative appearance as coaches on the most recent season of "The Ultimate Fighter," the UFCs competition reality show. "In judo, I didnt know what a cheer was," Rousey said. "Cheers are whats new." And all things considered, the first 40 games have offered a little bit of everything from a hockey club that faced many questions in its first year under new management, with a new head coach and with a number of new faces in the lineup. Lucas spent the last three seasons of his seven-year career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres are considering whether or not to finalize or void their agreed-upon trade for Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp due to results over the outfielders physical, according to a report from USA Today. Sources told USA Today that Kemps physical revealed arthritis in both of his hips, with the Padres still trying to determine whether the condition will impact the remainder of the 30-year-olds playing career. The Padres and Dodgers had set a deadline for Thursday to complete the deal, in which Los Angeles would send Kemp and backup catcher Tim Federowicz to San Diego in exchange for catcher Yasmani Grandal, pitcher Joe Wieland and minor league hurler Zach Elfin. Los Angeles is also believed to be sending the Padres $32 million towards the remaining $107 million Kemp is owed on his contract, which runs through 2019. The snag also impacts the Dodgers pending trade with Philadelphia involving Jimmy Rollins, as Elfin was to be sent to the Phillies for the veteran shortstop. Kemp has been hampered by hamstring issues in two of the last three seasons, missing 51 games in 2012 and 73 in 2013. The 2011 National League MVP runner- up did play in 150 games this past season, batting .287 with 25 home runs and 89 RBI. Padres first-year general manager A.J. Preller has been aggressive this offseason in trying to improve an offense that was the worst in the majors in 2014. In addition to the potential Kemp trade, Preller reportedly has swung a deal to acquire 2013 American League Rookie of the Year Wil Myers from Tampa Bay as part of a three-team swap that also involves the Washington Nationals. Watch the game live on TSN and TSN GO at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. In order to close out this best-of-seven set, however, the Rangers will have to become the first team to win consecutive games in this series. Through five meetings so far, New York has won the odd-numbered contests with the Flyers posting victories in Games 2 and 4. The Flyers hope to extend the series by earning a win in their final home test of this Eastern Conference quarterfinal matchup. If Philadelphia can pick up a win tonight, the clubs will have a short turnaround for Game 7, which is scheduled for Wednesday night in New York. After losing Sunday afternoon in Manhattan, Philadelphia has lost 10 of its last 11 visits to Madison Square Garden. The Rangers jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Flyers in Sundays Game 5 at Madison Square Garden and then held on for a 4-2 decision. Marc Staal opened the scoring with 8:07 left in the first stanza, while Brad Richards and Dominic Moore each netted second-period goals to hand New York a 3-0 cushion. Moore added an assist on Brian Boyles empty-net score in the final seconds that sealed the victory and put the Flyers on the brink of elimination. "Its frustrating," Flyers forward Scott Hartnell said of the loss. "Youre always playing catch-up. You make it a lot harder on yourself. Youre skating that much harder to get on pucks, to create turnovers, to get chances, instead of playing comfortable. Its a lot easier when youve got a lead." Henrik Lundqvist came up with 24 saves for New York, which bounced back from a 2-1 Game 4 loss in which Flyers netminder Steve Mason turned in a stellar 37- save effort.dddddddddddd "I thought we played a really good game, good energy," said Lundqvist. "Looking back at the game in Philly (on Friday), we did a lot of good things as well. The difference is today we scored a couple goals and that brings a lot of confidence to the group. Its easy to play patient and not overdo a lot of things." Mason managed just 18 stops on Sunday and Philadelphia wasnt able to maintain its momentum from Fridays win despite captain Claude Giroux and veteran Vincent Lecavalier recording their first goals of the these playoffs. "This series is definitely not over," Mason said. "Were looking forward to going home and having a big game there and bringing it back here for Game 7." The Flyers are 7-10 all-time in series when trailing 3-2. New York is 13-2 in playoff series in which it held a lead of three games to two. The Rangers have lost 11 straight playoff games when holding a series lead. Philadelphia defenseman Hal Gill saw his first action of the 2014 postseason Sunday, filling in for the injured Nicklas Grossman, who hurt his right knee in Game 4. Gill was a minus-2 in just over 12 minutes of ice time in Game 5. Grossmann is expected to miss Game 6, but Erik Gustafsson will fill in for the injured blueliner on Tuesday instead of Gill. The 25-year-old Gustafsson had two goals and eight assists in 31 games this season and has one goal and one assist over seven career playoff tilts. J.T. Miller, New Yorks first-round pick in the 2011 draft, made his playoff debut on Sunday. The 21-year-old forward contributed a point to the winning effort. Including this playoff series, which is the first postseason meeting between New York and Philadelphia since 1997, the Rangers have lost four of their last five games at Wells Fargo Center. Atleticos David Villa enjoyed the perfect start against his former club by netting well-taken opener in the 12th minute. He left Barcelona following the arrival of Neymar in the off-season. Neymar went on in the 59th with the Catalan club struggling in attack, and seven minutes later headed in the equalizer from a pass by Dani Alves. The 21-year-old Neymar joined the Spanish champions from Brazilian club Santos for 57 million euros in June, the eighth most expensive signing in football history. And after two appearances, both as a substitute as he recovers from anemia, he has his first goal. "My first goal is a thrilling moment," said Neymar. "Im very happy because I went on and was able to help the team in a tough moment. We got a good result and now we need to finish it off at home." The return match will be played at Barcelonas Camp Nou next Wednesday after this weekends league fixtures. Villa opened the scoring with a beautiful goal that he helped create with his passing before finishing off with a right-foot volley. After Atletico had recovered the ball, Villa combined with Arda Turan on the left flank before slicing the Turkey midfielders cross between diving goalkeeper Victor Valdes and the post. "Im happy because (scoring) is what Im asked to do," Villa said. "In the first half I was able to put one in. But the draw is a shame because we worked and ran hard against a very good team. Too bad we couldnt get a better result. The tie is wide open." In the first half, Atleticos packed midfield and physical play shut down Barcelonas attack that had cruised to a 7-0 win over Levante on Sunday, butt against the Copa del Rey holders was limited to Pedro Rodriguezs timid shot before Villas goal.dddddddddddd. Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino may have insisted he wanted his team to recover its pressing defence from the early years of Pep Guardiola, but early on it was Diego Simeones team that was more intense in closing in with multiple defenders. "Im proud of my players. We played a great first half," said Simeone. "I would even dare to say that it was the one of the best first halves of a final that we have ever played." Messi was replaced at halftime with a left thigh problem. Although he showed no apparent signs on injury in the first 45 minutes, Cesc Fabregas took his place after the break. On Sunday, Martino took Messi off after he had scored two goals in the league opener, but this time the club said his exit was "due to precaution for pain in the back of his left thigh caused by a knock." Messi had a muscle injury in his left leg last week and had a nagging right hamstring strain that ruled him out of several games at the end of last season. Barcelona had begun to show some flashes in attack when Neymar replaced Pedro Rodriguez in the 59th, but it was Atletico forward Diego Costa who drew a save from Valdes moments later after a team buildup more reminiscent of the league champions passing style. With the visitors apparently stalled once again, Dani Alves worked a one-two with Xavi Hernandez on the right flank before picking Neymar out charging in at the far post. The Brazil striker jumped over his marker and headed the ball under goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Barcelona lifted but was unable to find the winner and had to settle for the away-goal advantage. "Neymars goal gave us life," Xavi said. "Its too bad that Messi got hurt. It looks like it isnt much." CALGARY -- Bob Nicholsons advice to his successor at Hockey Canada is be as comfortable having a beer with a minor hockey coach in Kindersley, Sask., as you are in the New York office of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. From the 3,500 minor hockey associations across the country to the highest halls of hockey power, Nicholsons ability to establish, build and maintain connections turned Hockey Canada into a powerful sports organization. After 16 years as president and chief executive officer, Nicholsons last day on the job was spent presiding over the organizations annual general meeting in Calgary. "There are so many partnerships you have to work on," Nicholson said Saturday. "Thats how you grow the business side of the game and how you grow the game itself." His successor will be chosen by Hockey Canadas board of directors. Its a job of many moving parts that includes player, coach and official development programs, national teams, corporate sales and marketing, licensing, insurance, regulations and building consensus among 13 provincial branches. Nicholsons parting instructions also included tapping into Canadas multicultural population. "We need to figure out how to deal with new Canadians," he explained. "We need to be more flexible. We cant just register kids from September to April. We should have two or three hockey seasons. "The families are changing. We cant continue to do things we did in the 70s, 80s and 90s. There has to be change." There was a lot of that during Nicholsons tenure. The 60-year-old from Penticton, B.C., started with B.C. Hockey before joining Hockey Canada as vice-president in 1990. Hockey Canada and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association merged in 1994 and Nicholson became president in 1998. "The reason there was a merger was both organizations were bankrupt," Nicholson recalled. The non-profit organization is now an operation of approximately $45 million annually due in large part to marketing and packaging of Canadas passion, as well as turning the organization into a brand. "The easiest way to describe that was when I started as president we had 20 staff and we have 127 staff today. Our budgets were $5 million total," Nicholson said. "We just really took the mark and built partnerships." A prime example is the world mens under-20 hockey championship that is a major contributor to the coffers. Hockey Canada parlayed the annual tournaments growing popularity into lucrative sponsorships and a large television contract with TSN. The money goes not only to Hockey Canada, but to the Canadian Hockey League that supplies a large number of players to the tournament as well as minor hockey associations who develop them. Nicholson struck a deal with the International Ice Hockey Federation to bring the tournament to Canada every two years starting in 2015. Its also been held in Canada three of the last five years. "The world juniors and the womens worlds, those are a real staple in this country and theyre a big part of the tradition and also the financial side of it," Nicholson said. Canada has won both mens and womens Olympic hockey gold in back-to-back Winter Games. The 2002 mens hockey team, assembled by Wayne Gretzky, won gold to end a 50-year drought at the Winter Olympics. Canadian teams have won 44 gold at world championships, Olympics and World Cups on Nicholsons watch. "Look at the people hes brought into our organization, whether its high-end professional staff or people like Wayne Gretzky and Steve Yzerman," Hockey Canada chairman Jim Hornell said. "His capacity to bring people into our organization is huge and that will live on." Registration rose from 519,000 in 1998 when Nicholson took over to 634,892 this past season. Much of that growth has come in the female game with an increase from 29,000 to almost 90,000 today. Nicholson has also been front and centre on thorny issues. In the wake of revelations that junior hockey coach Graham James sexually abused players, a Speak Out program was established in 1997 to help prevent abuse and bullying in sport. When to introduce bodychecking in minor hockey has been a source of continual and fractious debate. Concussions in hockey are problematic for the long-term health of players. Nicholson emphasized safety in his final address at the AGM. "Everything you do, do it for the player," he said. "Its not about the turf youre representing or the area of the country you live in. Do whats best for the player. Player safety, those terms are all changing. We have to change with the time. "I really believe when I look back 10 years from now, this organization is going to go to a whole other level. As long as you continue to focus on the players, making sure players play this game safe, Canada will always be the country that carries this game worldwide." Establishing an initiation program to introduce children age five and six to hockey is part of Nicholsons legacy. He also oversaw the move of Hockey Canadas headquarters from Father David Bauer Arena at the University of Calgary to the WinSport at Canada Olympic Park. His first day off the job Sunday was to be spent golfing in Penticton. Nicholson will continue as a IIHF vice-president. Speculation is the NHL will come calling. "I dont know," Nicholson said. "In fairness Ive got a lot of options on my table. I told everyone I wasnt going to speak until June 1. Im going to have to deal with some things and see where it goes." Scarpe Air Max Outlet . MADRID, Spain -- Cristiano Ronaldo will miss Real Madrids visit to Real Sociedad on Saturday, with his team in third place as the Spanish league reaches its conclusion. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti says he will rest Ronaldo, who is "tired and little worn down," after he left Wednesdays 3-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund with pain in his left knee. Madrid trails leader Atletico Madrid by three points and second-place Barcelona by two points with seven rounds to go. The match at Anoeta stadium against sixth-place Sociedad is arguably the most difficult match left for Madrid, which plays four more games at home and two more away at Celta Vigo and Valladolid. KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Graham Zusi scored in the 88th minute to lift Sporting Kansas City to a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night and into a three-way tie for first place in the Eastern Conference. Benny Feilhaber also scored for Sporting (12-9-6), which broke a two-match shutout loss streak and pulled even with Montreal and New York atop the East. Feilhaber scored from 30 yards in the 33rd minute to put Kansas City up 1-0. After centre forward Dom Dwyer -- making his first league start -- beat Colorados Hendry Thomas to a loose ball, Feilhabers right-footed shot curled inside the left post, breaking Sportings goalless streak at 213 minutes. Edson Buddle, who entered the match as a substitute in the 70th, tied it seven minutes later for the Rapids (10-8-9), who snapped a nine-match unbeaten streak. Buddle tracked down a deflected ball 25 yards from goal, and his low shot deflected off centre back Matt Beslers foot and bounced inside the right post. Discount Shoes Online Free Shipping . NEW YORK -- With a handful of boppers in their new-look lineup, these Miami Marlins are a legitimate comeback threat. Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered leading off the 10th inning, Giancarlo Stanton also went deep and Miami rallied from four runs down to beat the New York Mets 7-6 on Saturday night. Stanton hit a two-run shot and Miami climbed out of a 5-1 hole with a five-run sixth capped by pinch-hitter Reed Johnsons two-run double. Stantons seventh home run of the season gave him 29 RBIs, most in the majors. "There wasnt any point we thought we were out of this game," Saltalamacchia said. "With our lineup, theres no doubt were going to put up runs." Bobby Abreu hit his first major league homer since 2012 and Lucas Duda had a two-run single for the Mets, who had won three straight and five of six. New York was trying to move four games over .500 for the first time since July 14, 2012. Mike Dunn (2-3) struck out four in two hitless innings and Steve Cishek earned his fifth save, one night after coughing up a ninth-inning lead for his first blown save since June 4, 2013. Cishek had converted a team-record 33 straight chances before Friday. "These guys have a lot of fight in them. I wasnt worried that they were going to get down on themselves," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "Definitely something to build off of tonight." Saltalamacchia, who hit a tying homer Friday, sent a 2-2 pitch from Kyle Farnsworth (0-1) off a railing just above the left-centre fence. The ball caromed back onto the field and Saltalamacchia initially stopped at second base, but the umpires quickly waved him home without looking at a replay. "It was supposed to be a fastball away, came over the middle," Farnsworth said. "If Im going to get beat, Im going to get beat with my best pitch and he put a good swing on it, went opposite field." "Hes trying to do one thing -- hit the ball out of the park. Im looking to be aggressive," the reliever added. "Just one of those cases of old-fashioned hardball." Miami is 2-9 on the road and 3-11 against NL East opponents. But the offence is certainly dangerous; the previously punchless Marlins began the day third in the NL in runs and batting average. Mets starter Jenrry Mejia, backed by two outstanding plays from shortstop Omar Quintanilla, took a 5-1 lead into the sixth, when the first three Marlins batters swung at the first pitch and hit the ball hard. "It caught me by surprise, thats for sure," Mets catcher Travis dArnaud said. Marcell Ozuna doubled, Stanton homered to right-centre and Casey McGehee singled as rain began to fall. Two outs later, Adeiny Hechavarria chased Mejia with an RBI single. Johnson went after Carlos Torres first pitch and sliced a high fly that landed just fair in the right-field corner to give Miami a 6-5 advantage. "We saw what we can do in one inning. We have to keep that confidence up tomorrow," Stanton said. Mejia was charged with six runs and eight hits. New York starters had gone straight 11 games without allowing more than three runs. Saltalamacchias passed ball and Hechavarrias throwing error from shortstop let the Mets tie it in the bottom half. Five hitters in New Yorks lineup entered batting .375 or better with at least one home run against Marlins starter Kevin Slowey. One of those was the 40-year-old Abreu, who made his second start for the Mets since getting called up Monday from Triple-A Las Vegas. Abreu, who didnt play in the majors last season, hit a two-run shot in the first inning to give New York a 3-0 lead. It was his first big league homer since Sept. 28, 2012, with the Los Angeles Dodgers against Colorado. "Feels good, man. A relief, Id say, after one year off," Abreu said. Shoddy defence by the Marlins led to New Yorks first run, on David Wrights sacrifice fly. Derek Dietrich hit an RBI single in the second, snapping Mejias scoreless streak at a career-best 14 2-3 innings. NOTES: Sloweys previous outing at Citi Field was a memorable one. He struck out eight over seven shutout innings, setting club records for strikeouts and innings in a relief appearance, to earn the win in Miamis 20-inning victory last June 8. ... New York native Tom Koehler (2-1, 2.13 ERA) faces Mets RHP Dillon Gee (1-1, 3.58 ERA) in the series finale Sunday. ... Abreu is 8 for 20 (.400) with four home runs against Slowey. ... Mets manager Terry Collins won a replay challenge in the top of the ninth after Christian Yelich was called safe at first on a bunt. The ruling was overturned following a review that lasted 2 minutes, 8 seconds. ... Mets 2B Daniel Murphy was ejected by plate umpire Seth Buckminster for protesting a called third strike in the bottom of the 10th. Price followed up his whitewash of the Rangers on Thursday with 36 saves. He improved to 10-1-1 since Dec. 20, thanks in part to Pacioretty chipping in Tomas Plekanecs centering feed in OT. BEREA, Ohio -- Johnny Football fell and landed in the Dawg Pound. Johnny Manziel, college footballs most entertaining player with the reputation for pulling off magical plays, was selected with the No. 22 overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night by the Cleveland Browns, who hope they have finally found their franchise quarterback. Manziel sat patiently in the wings at Radio City Music Hall, waiting nearly three hours for his name to be called as everyone from Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the leagues official Twitter account tweeted about him squirming in his chair backstage. Then the Browns, who made two earlier trades, made another one with Philadelphia and selected the polarizing and electrifying 6-footer. Manziel walked onto the stage to meet Commissioner Roger Goodell and rubbed his fingers together, a signature "money" gesture that endeared him to some fans and annoyed others. In Cleveland, some Browns backers celebrated Manziels selection like the team had just won the Super Bowl. Of course, the Browns have never even made it to the NFLs showcase event and havent won a title since 1964 -- a golden anniversary that will arrive in December. But Manziel brings hope to a city that has witnessed little but losing since the Browns returned as an expansion team in 1999. Manziel now must back up the hype around him. "The team obviously wants to win and wants to win now," Manziel said on a conference call. "Ive been a winner everywhere Ive been. Im ready to work extremely hard. " Manziels size scared away some teams, but he believes his playmaking skills translate to the pro game. "Im used to that by now," Manziel said. "Ive been scrutinized and nitpicked. Ive proven it from my first year to my next and I always get better." Manziel is expected to compete with starter Brian Hoyer, who showed promise last season before suffering a knee injury. Manziel brings an instantaneous buzz and national relevance to the Browns, who have made the playoffs just once since 1999 and have lost at least 11 games in each of the past six seasons. Cleveland is on its third coach in three years, but Mike Pettine is inheriting a team with potential and five Pro Bowlers on its roster. And now, hes got Manziel -- and the circus that will come along with him. The Browns have to hope the No. 22 pick doesnt haunt them again. Thats the pick they also used on quarterback Brady Quinn, whose first-round slide in 2007 was similar to Manziels drop, and they also drafted Brandon Weeden two years ago. He was released in March. Theres no doubt Manziel will help sell tickets and his jersey will be coveted by every young Cleveland fan. But what remains to be seen is if he can win. Earlier, as Manziel waited, the Browns made two trades and selected Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert with the No. 8 pick. With the first deal of the draft, the Browns moved down five spots and acquired Buffalos No. 9 pick and first- and fourth-round picks next year. Cleveland then swapped picks with Minnesota, acquiring a fifth-rounder before taking Gilbert, who they plan to play on the opposite side of Pro Bowler Joe Haden. "Hes long. Hes fast. Hes explosive. Hes a playmaker," general manager Ray Farmer said of Gilbert. "Hes got great arm length. Hes got the speed. Hes got the ball skills. I know some people have questioned his tackling. We cover like Browns, tackling was good, but it doesnt necessarily need to be great." Gilbert scoffed at critics who say hes a weak tackler. "Ive heard it before," he said. "Its something that doesnt bother me at all because I know I can tackle." Gilbert wasnt sure the Browns were that interested in him until he was getting ready to head to New York. "Its a dream come true," Gilbert said in a conference call. "I became friends with him (Haden) not too long ago and hes a great guy and Im looking forward to playing with him." The 6-foot, 202-pound Gilbert had seven interceptions last season, returning two for touchdowns. "I pretty much can do it all," Gilbert said. "Im an all-around cornerback." Cleveland entered the most important draft in its expansion era with 10 picks, ample ammunition for Farmer, promoted when president Joe Banner and GM Michael Lombardi were fired in February, to add talent and depth to a team that went 4-12 last season and fired coach Rob Chudzinski. During the winter, the Browns, who entered the draft with five of the first 83 picks, did an exhaustive study on quarterbacks with Louisvilles Teddy Bridgewater reportedly emerging as the top candidate. In the end, Manziel was their man. Discount Nuggets Jerseys . Ben Street scored twice for the Heat (17-5-1), who won their fourth game in a row and 13th in their last 14 outings. MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman has made his philosophy well known by now: construct the foundation through the draft and use free agency to supplement the core of the roster. Coming off of a five-win season and with so many holes to fill, Spielman needed to be a little more aggressive on the open market to take some of the pressure the looming draft. Spielman capped a busy first week of free agency by signing receiver Jerome Simpson and cornerback Derek Cox to one-year deals on Friday, saying he needed to move quickly to shore up the defence and give them some freedom for the May draft. The Vikings spent big money to keep defensive end Everson Griffen and sign defensive tackle Linval Joseph to replace Jared Allen and Kevin Williams. They also worked hard to keep quarterback Matt Cassel and get cornerback Captain Munnerlyn to help beef up the struggling defensive backfield, while sprinkling in Simpson, Cox and Fred Evans on one-year deals for depth. "By doing that, it sure helps you head into the draft not to get boxed in; well, youve got to take this position," Spielman said on Friday. "Now we have that flexibility to see how the draft is going to fall -- and I do believe this is a very deep draft and the potential of moving up or down in the draft to accumulate picks -- youre still going to be able to add a lot of youth and a lot of young talent that can come in and help our ball club." The Vikings pick No. 8 overall in the draft, which starts May 8. Addressing many of their most pressing needs in free agency frees Spielman to get creative. With Cassel, he doesnt have to draft a quarterback early. With Joseph there to occupy double teams, he doesnt have to get a run stuffer to play next to last years first-round pick, Sharrif Floyd. With Munnerlyn on one corner opposite Xavier Rhodes, and Cox added to a group that also includes Marcus Sherels and Josh Robinson, he doesnt have to draft a cornerback rright away.dddddddddddd. The aggressiveness also gives a new coaching staff that includes head coach Mike Zimmer, offensive co-ordinator Norv Turner and defensive co-ordinator George Edwards, a solid veteran base with which to work. "I think by the activity that weve done so far, its by no means the end of what were going to do," Spielman said. "Well continue to monitor the market and work through the next couple weeks. But it gives us the flexibility that well need heading into the draft, where you dont have to hone and say you have to take this position. Again, with the opportunity as we develop our draft board to take the best available player." Simpson bounced back from an injury-plagued first season in Minnesota in 2012 with a solid season last year. He caught 48 passes for a career-high 726 yards in 2013 and expressed a desire to return to the Vikings when the season closed. Spielman said the Vikings like the deep threat Simpson brings to the table alongside fellow receivers Greg Jennings and Cordarrelle Patterson. But Simpson could face discipline from the league for a drunken driving arrest when next season opens. "He does have explosive speed down the field and does give us a vertical threat, but we felt confident enough and comfortable enough after the new coaching staff had met with him and understand the whole circumstance behind that last arrest that we re-signed him back to a one-year deal," Spielman said. Spielman said the Vikings were in talks to bring back left guard Charlie Johnson and were not closing the door on a possible return for Williams, the stalwart defensive tackle who has anchored Minnesotas line since 2003. The Vikings hosted defensive tackle Henry Melton for a visit, but he left on Thursday without a deal. "Theres no decision thats been made," Spielman said of Williams. "I told him wed leave it open. But we were trying to address some other needs that we definitely wanted to get done first." ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays latest defeat had a little different twist -- four late runs and six hits that left them one run short of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Andrew McCutchen drove in two runs, Jeff Locke pitched into the eighth inning and the Pirates beat the Rays 6-5 on Tuesday night, handing Tampa Bay its 20th loss in 28 games. "The moral victories are not what were looking for right now; were looking for the actual victories," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "I love the idea that the winning run came to the plate. ... Theres a lot of good things to draw from tonight, but we cant continue to lose this type of game." Russell Martins fourth home run gave the Pirates a 6-1 lead, but Evan Longoria hit a two-run home run off Locke in the eighth. Singles by Logan Forsythe, Desmond Jennings and Brandon Guyer produced two more runs off closer Mark Melancon in the ninth, but Longorida flied out to end it. "We were maybe a hit away or something, but it happens," said Guyer, who scored on Longorias 10th home run in the eighth. "We just have to bring the momentum into the game tomorrow and try to get a win." The Pirates have the NLs best record (27-18) since May 6, and moved above .500 (39-38) for the first time since starting the season 7-6. McCutchen had an RBI single during a three-run third inning that put the Pirates ahead 4-0. The 2013 NL MVP had two RBIs in Pittsburghs 8-1 win Monday night over the Rays. Locke (1-1) allowed three runs and eight hits over 7 1-3 innings. His night ended with Longorias homer. Melancon got his 13th save. Chris Archer (4-5) gave up five runs and seven hits in seven innings for the Rays. "We lost. We got an L, but we played hard and I dont know that there was much more we could do, other than me not walking two leadoff hitters," Archer said. "That ultimately was the difference in the game." Pirates left fielder Starling Marte left in the fifth inning with concussion-like symptoms after a head-first slide during a failed stolen base attempt. He made contact with Rays second baseman Sean Rodriguez on the play. Gregory Polanco started the game with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on catcher Jose Molinas throwing error, and scored to make it 1-0 on a grounder by McCutchen. Polanco has reached base in all of his 14 games since being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on June 10. Tampa Bay got within 4-1 in the fifth when Forsythe hit a two-out triple and Jose Molina followed with an RBI double. Molina, who has two RBIs in 43 games this season, is 2 for 34 with runners in scoring position. Marte hit a run-scoring single and Neil Walker had a sacrifice fly in the third, a three-run inning which started with a walk to Pedro Alvarez. Walker returned after being on the 15-day disabled list since June 9 because of an appendectomy. NOTES: Kevin Kiermaier pinch hit for Rays SS Yunel Escobar in the eighth, partly because of a sore right shoulder than will keep Escobar out of the lineup for Wednesdays series finale. ... Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle should announce Wednesday when RHP Gerrit Cole (right shoulder fatigue) will return to the rotation. Maddon said RHP Jeremy Hellickson (right elbow surgery) will need at least one more minor league start before returning. ... NASCAR driver Aric Almirola took batting practice and gave Maddon a Rays racing helmet. ... Tampa Bay LHP David Price (5-7) and Pirates RHP Charlie Morton (4-8) are Wednesdays scheduled starters. "I really just should have coached the team, but [Lerner] didnt want me to," Holmgren told TheMMQB.com. After making three Super Bowl appearances in 17 years coaching the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, Holmgren failed to find any successs as the Browns President in his relatively short stint with the team.dddddddddddd Hired ahead of the 2010 season, Holmgren retained then-head coach Eric Mangini for a season before firing him and replacing him with Pat Shurmer. Holmgren went on to tell TheMMQB that at the time of Shurmers hiring, he felt he wasnt ready to coach again.
