Here yesterday, it was thumbs down to the lack of solid candidates for Hart Trophy consideration at the NHL seasons halfway mark. Well, the story is very different if we make a list of coaches who might win the Jack Adams Award should their teams continue to play well. If the Nashville Predators can finish first overall, or win the Central Division, or come close to doing one or the other, Peter Laviolette would seem a clear-cut coach of the year favourite. But the other contenders are many. In no particular order, I would nominate Jon Cooper, Tampa Bay; Mike Johnston, Pittsburgh; Jack Capuano, NY Islanders; Barry Trotz, Washington; Bob Hartley, Calgary; Willie Desjardins, Vancouver; Paul Maurice, Winnipeg, and Gerard Gallant, Florida. This leaves out Joel Quenneville, Chicago; Bruce Boudreau, Anaheim; Ken Hitchcock, St. Louis; Michel Therrien, Montreal; Mike Babcock, Detroit; and Alain Vigneault, NY Rangers. Theyre doing the good work you expect them to do and have seen them do in the past. That shouldnt disqualify them from a vote that determines the best coaching job of the current season, but meeting expectations isnt what the Adams Award is about. The coach of the year is usually the one who best exceeds expectations. So far, Laviolette has done that. As always, it is necessary to point out that votes for the Adams Award are often followed at some point by pink slips. Two of the last four winners--Paul MacLean and Dan Bylsma--are looking for work. Thumbs down to the recently-unveiled NHL All-Star jerseys that will be worn by Zemgus Girgensons and friends in Columbus later this month. I’m at a loss to describe what you can see and I don’t know a name for “that” colour, but it’s enough to say that if there’s a good reason to throw a jersey onto the ice, and I am in stated opposition to that practice, and to media coverage of same, getting rid of one of these would make some sense. Acquiring one in the first place wouldn’t. The NHL says the jersey design and its colours were inspired by the fact none of the 30 NHL teams wears anything similar. Let me close by saying: There’s a reason for that. Albert Wilson Dolphins Jersey . 1. Lions WR Calvin Johnson (6 REC, 101 YDS, 1 TD, 10 targets) leads receivers with 1,299 yards and 12 touchdowns, though his 118.1 receiving yards per game ranks second behind Clevelands Josh Gordon. Gordon (10 REC, 261 YDS, 2 TD, 15 targets) is emerging as a superstar, putting up huge numbers even with Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden at quarterback. Kalen Ballage Jersey . Riethers apparent stamp on Manchester United midfielder Adnan Januzaj during Saturdays Premier League match at Craven Cottage was missed by the match officials. Zimmerman hit a 2-0 pitch off Mike Fiers (0-1) over the wall in left field to score Adam LaRoche for the Nationals fourth consecutive win. Tyler Clippard (5-2) pitched a scoreless 15th for the win. Rafael Soriano pitched the 16th for his 18th save. With one out in the 16th, LaRoche hit a sharp single that bounced off the wall in right field. Zimmerman then hit his third home run of the year to give the Nationals the lead in a game that took 5 hours, 22 minutes. The Brewers threatened in the 13th, 14th and 15th innings, but couldnt score. Lyle Overbay was stranded on third base in the 13th when Carlos Gomez hit a soft liner to shortstop to end the inning. In the 14th, Denard Span kept the Nationals alive with a leaping catch at the wall to rob Elian Herrera of an extra-base hit that likely would have scored Khris Davis from first and won the game for Milwaukee. Gomez popped out to end the 15th with Scooter Gennnett on second. Nationals manager Matt Williams intentionally walked Jonathan Lucroy in both the 13th and 15th innings to face Gomez, and the move worked both times to end threats. Washington had a chance to score in the 14th, putting runners on first and second with one out. Fiers got Danny Espinosa, who is 5 for 57 with runnerrs in scoring position, to fly out and Jose Lobaton grounded out to end the inning.dddddddddddd The Nationals were down to their final five outs when Anthony Rendon hit his 12th homer of the year, a solo shot, to right-centre off Will Smith with one out in the eighth to tie the score at 2. Thats when the bullpens took over. Neither team could get a runner in scoring position after Rendons homer until the Brewers fruitless rally in the 13th. The Brewers, who came into the series second in the NL in runs, lost 3-0 on Monday night. Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo allowed one run, four hits and two walks with five strikeouts, leaving after throwing 104 pitches in six innings. In his last four starts, he is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA. Washington starter Jordan Zimmermann pitched six innings, allowing two runs, six hits and two walks while striking out nine. In his last three starts, he is 0-2 with a no-decision despite having a 2.14 ERA in those games.
