Canadas massive under-17 mens hockey camp. The Antworten

CALGARY - It didnt take long for "the Canadian way" to become a mantra at Hockey Canadas massive under-17 mens hockey camp. The slogan is on the back of every red T-shirt worn by the 108 players circulating through the Markin MacPhail Centre on Calgarys west side. The phrase is drilled into their heads on and off the ice by their coaches and Hockey Canada staff. "They use that term almost in every sentence," Toronto defenceman Jakob Chychrun said Wednesday. "They really teach us all to be young men. "They talk about professionalism, respect and even the little things like cleaning the table up after lunch." Part of the revamp of the national under-17 program was summoning this vast group of players born in 1998 to learn early what Hockey Canada expects and wants from players who wear the Maple Leaf. The nine-day camp ends Tuesday. "Weve had a lot of lectures on the Canadian way and what that means to us and how we have to respect it," defenceman Sean Day said. "Thats one of the most used words Ive heard in the last two days is respect. Just having pride in your nation and respecting everyone who is involved and respecting your opponents." Their days have been filled with fitness and hockey skills testing as well as classroom seminars on nutrition, mental training and media relations. Theyre learning how to warm up and cool down properly for workouts and games in order to avoid injury and perform their best. Players from Duncan, B.C., to Mount Pearl, N.L., have been divided into six teams with their own coaches and support staff. They start playing games against each other Thursday. "The message to them is theres a way we do things here," said Scott Salmond, Hockey Canadas vice-president of hockey operations. "What were trying to teach them in the different areas, were going to have a better chance to win. "We want them leaving here knowing what the Canadian way is, that theyre going to play hard, theyre committed players, theyre character players, they accept their roles. The Canadian way was really borne out of the Olympic team and the performance that they had in Sochi, everything from how that team performed to how they prepared. "Its playing hard, its playing with character and when other teams push, we push back harder. Those are the messages were trying to give every day, all day. The Markin MacPhail Centre will bulge with Canadian hockey prospects when another 44 arrive Friday for the under-18 mens selection camp. A team of the best 22 players born in 1997 will be chosen to play for Canada at the annual Ivan Hlinka international tournament Aug. 11-16 in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Canada has won the tournament six consecutive years. The presence of the under-18 players is another way of driving home the message to the under-17 players whats required to play for Canada. "We want those kids to see the next level for them," Salmond said. The World Under-17 Hockey Challenge has traditionally been held in late December during its 22 years, but the event will be played Oct. 31 to Nov. 8 this year in Sarnia, Ont. Instead of five regional teams representing Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, West and Pacific, Canada will enter three teams mixing players from different regions. So Canadians will now play in the under-17 tournament under the banner of their country, and not their geographical region. There will be more competition to play in the tournament as 66 players from across the country will be named to those three squads. Torontos Chychrun and Day played for Ontario at the most recent under-17 tournament held in Sydney, N.S., under the old format. Forward Mitchell Balmas of Sydney represented Team Atlantic and Edmonton forward Tyler Benson played for Team Pacific. Chychrun was the first overall pick in this years Ontario Hockey League draft by the Sarnia Sting. Benson went first in last years Western Hockey League draft to the Vancouver Giants. Day is the only player invited to this under-17 camp who played major junior hockey last season. He was an underage defenceman for the OHLs Mississauga Steelheads. Balmas was a first-round pick of the QMJHLs Charlottetown Islanders this year. This is his first trip to Western Canada and his camp roommates are from Ontario and Quebec. Mixing the players pushes them out of their comfort zone. Where once they compared themselves to players from within their own province, they now measure themselves against their counterparts in the rest of the country. "You see how you rank with the other guys all across Canada and what you need to work on," Balmas said. "You kind of have to bring all your stuff because you dont know who youre playing against or who youre playing with. You have to learn and adapt." The Calgary Stampeders running back received the West Division nomination for the CFLs top individual award Thursday in voting by the Football Reporters of Canada and leagues eight head coaches. . It all would have been for naught, however, had it not been for some clutch shooting in the fourth quarter by Kobe Bryant and a couple of equally critical hustle plays by Derek Fisher and Pau Gasol in the final minutes. But to have to absorb what was said to him for any rational and intelligent person is too much. Fake Yeezys For Sale . -- Canadas Nicole Vandermade won the Four Winds Invitational on Sunday for her first Symetra Tour title, closing with a 4-under 68 for a one-stroke victory.ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Last week, Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins complained how all anyone in Buffalo wanted to focus on was the teams 14-season playoff drought.Make that 15, Sammy.Bills players young and old are dealing with the all-too-familiar frustrations of being on the outside looking in Monday, a day after extending the NFLs longest active playoff drought following a 26-24 loss at Oakland. As a player whos always been to the playoffs, whos never lost over eight games, it hurts, Watkins said. Im not used to losing. And hopefully, we fix it next year and get back on the right page.Buffalos drought is now tied as the NFLs 10th longest, and worst since the St. Louis/Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals went 15 years between playoff appearances from 1983-97.At least Watkins had a chance to crack a smile Monday. The first-round draft pick spoke while joining fellow rookies on a visit to Buffalos Womens and Childrens Hospital to deliver Christmas gifts and make holiday crafts. It hurts to lose the game, but its very important to wake up and start the day and come here and impact other peoples lives, he said. So I looked forward to just getting out of bed and not looking back on the game. Its over with. The Bills (8-7) are left playing a mean-nothing finale (for them) at AFC East rival New England (12-3) on Sunday. All thats on the line for Buffalo is an opportunity to win its first game at New England since Gillette Stadium opened in 2002, and finish with a winning record for the first time since going 9-7 in 2004.The loss to the Raiders (3-12) was a stunner, and exposed many of Buffalos season-long deficiencies on offence. It just breaks your heart, quarterback Kyle Orton said. It was all there. We just didnt have the execution. And in the end, it cost us.The slow-starting offence managed just 10 points and 145 yards on its firsst 10 possessions.dddddddddddd It closed by generating two touchdowns and 166 yards on its last four drives in a rally that fell short. That wasnt enough to overcome an uncharacteristically sloppy outing by a usually stingy defence. After not giving up a touchdown pass against Denvers Peyton Manning and Green Bays Aaron Rodgers in its previous two games, Buffalo allowed Raiders rookie Derek Carr to throw two. There really arent any words for how disappointed I am just with myself and the way we played in general, safety Aaron Williams said. We just let it slip away. The offence provided little help.On 13 carries, Buffalo managed 13 yards, the fourth-lowest total in team history. The ground game has sputtered all season in having managed 1,378 yards through 15 games. The Bills low for a 16-game season is 1,552 set in 2006.Coach Doug Marrone blamed the offensive line. They kicked our butt up front, Marrone said. When you do that, its difficult to run, pass and do a lot of things. The loss renewed questions regarding Marrones job security after his second season. The franchise is entering a new era under owners Terry and Kim Pegula, who purchased the team in October. The Pegulas previously expressed a desire to wait until after the season to evaluate the franchise so as not to distract the team. After beating Green Bay last week, Bills President Russ Brandon voiced his support for Marrone by saying the coach has the team on the right path. Following the loss at Oakland, Marrone insisted hes not going anywhere when asked about a report linking him to the vacancy at Michigan.I have nothing to do with that job, Marrone said. Youre stuck with me. Fortunately or unfortunately.___AP Sports Writer Josh Dubow in Oakland, California, contributed to this report.___AP NFL website: and ' ' '
