STORRS, Conn. - National champion UConn is losing one junior star to the NBA draft, while another has announced he is staying with the Huskies. The school announced Friday that forward DeAndre Daniels has filed the necessary paperwork with the NBA and will forgo his senior season of eligibility. The school says guard Ryan Boatright will return next season. Daniels says he discussed the decision with his family and they all agreed it was time to turn pro. "To go out on top like we did makes it even better," the 6-foot-9 junior said in a statement. Daniels averaged 13.1 points and 6.0 rebounds, but 16.0 points and 7.2 rebounds during the Huskies NCAA tournament run. Boatright averaged 12.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists. The stress, the waiting, the whispers about whether he doped during his stellar cycling career, all of it ended when - after nearly two years - federal prosecutors closed an investigation of him last week without bringing any charges.RENTON, Wash. -- Theres no question about the talent among the starters in the Seattle Seahawks secondary. Behind those four -- Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Byron Maxwell -- there is some concern about depth in the coming weeks because of two key injuries. Cornerback Jeremy Lane, the Seahawks nickel back who plays against slot receivers, was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury Monday with the designation to return. He will miss at least the next eight weeks before he can rejoin the active roster. Cornerback Tharold Simon underwent minor knee surgery last week but is still expected to be out at least four weeks. The injury to Lane is more significant. Seattle played the majority of last Thursdays season-opening win over Green Bay with five defensive backs and is likely to take a similar tack with San Diego and Denver next on the schedule. Lane got all of those snaps before getting hurt in the third quarter and replaced by Marcus Burley, who was acquired by Seattle via trade just days before the opener. The Seahawks have withstood injuries and suspensions in the secondary in the past and this is the latest test. "(I) have no concerns at all because our mentality is were only as strong as our weakest link. We always say no weak links," Chancellor said. "The way we work in our room we share all information. Anything we know, anything we see on the field, we share with our backups, we share with each other. So everyone is on the same beat (and) if anyone goes down a guy can step right in, step in with confidence and finish the game." Seattle addressed some of the depth concerns by signing former Carolina cornerback Josh Thomas on Mondayy.dddddddddddd Thomas spent the last three seasons with Carolina, appearing in 38 games. Last season he started six games and had 28 tackles and an interception. Thomas was cut by the Panthers when Carolina trimmed its roster to 53 on Aug. 30. His agent immediately reached out to the Seahawks and that initial contact paid off with Thomas signing. In previous seasons the Seahawks had enough depth to overcome issues. It was usually Maxwell or Lane stepping in when there was a vacancy for whatever reason. Now those two have been elevated into starting roles and there are questions about who falls in behind. Burley ended up getting 25 plays against Green Bay. The Seahawks played 57 of 62 defensive snaps with five defensive backs against the Packers. Facing the Chargers and Broncos in consecutive weeks likely means even more snaps using an extra defensive back. "Its all about confidence in this league and if you dont have confidence youre beat before you start playing," Earl Thomas said. "But we come out there with a lot of confidence because weve prepared well during the week and we understand how you want to attack us and we understand how to play football." Seattle also signed OT Andrew McDonald on Monday off Carolinas practice squad. McDonald was "Player A" in a report on the Miami Dolphins bullying scandal this year that indicated he was among those bullied. He also had surgery for testicular cancer in May. McDonald said his health is fine and he was grateful to be signed on his 26th birthday. "To have the opportunity to be on the 53, especially here with Seattle, its a huge blessing in my eyes and obviously Im pretty ecstatic about it," McDonald said. Jordan Spieth has been looking back on his record-breaking Masters victory last year in a special Sky Sports feature. Spieth claimed a wire-to-wire win at Augusta National, rolling in a record 28 birdies over the week and equalling the tournament-best overall score of 18 under set by Tiger Woods in 1997. Jordan Spieth reflects on his memorable 2015 Masters victory. The young Texan recalls the days of playing the course he grew up on, Brookhaven Country Club, where he and his friends used to practice putts to win the Masters. The dream became a reality in 2015, although it was not always plain sailing for him as he held off Justin Rose over the final round. CALGARY - A fine display of hand-eye co-ordination from Patrick Marleau was the difference on Saturday night.Marleaus goal on a unique play halfway through the third period stood up as the game-winner as the San Jose Sharks edged the Calgary Flames 3-2.From behind the net, Logan Coutures centring attempt deflected off the stick of Flames defenceman Mark Giordano and went high into the air, sailed over top of the Calgary net and came down nearly on top of Marleau, who bumped it with his arm and then batted the puck out of mid-air past Karri Ramo.We were able to get our forecheck finally going in the third. Tommy Wingels and Couture both got in there and I kind of juggled it in front and I was able to bat it in, said Marleau. The Sharks have won four straight on the heels of a 2-0 shutout loss at home to the Flames on Nov. 26.Lucky bounces. Something that has been few and far between for us so far so its good to get one, said Couture, who also scored his 11th goal.Re-united as a line after that November loss to the Flames, Couture, Marleau and Wingels have been on fire with 20 combined points during the past four games.Weve played together on and off for a while now. But Tommy and Couture, theyre both so sound in their positional play, its easy to play with them, said Marleau.Justin Braun also scored for San Jose (14-10-4), which plays in Edmonton on Sunday night. Wingels chipped in with a pair of assists giving him nine points (three goals, six assists) during a four-game point streak.Giordano and Johnny Gaudreau replied for Calgary (17-9-2), which had its four-game winning streak snapped. The Flames open up a four-game road trip Tuesday in Toronto. They didnt make that many (mistakes) so we did take advantage of the few, found a way to beat a hot goaltender, found a way to get ourselves back into the game, said Sharks head coach Todd McLellan. Our first period was not anywhere near where it needed to be but we chatted a little bit between periods and responded well so its a good sign for us.Couture said that chat, as McLellan put it, was a mild way to describe it.If you were close to the room you could probably hear him screaming, Couture said. We knew in this room it was a pretty pathetic period by this group. It was nice to see us rebound and come out strong in the second. The Flames outshot San Jose 35-30 but mistakes on the first two goals cost them.I felt that we played a real good game, but on their goals, we made some major mistakes and theyre a team that theyre so talented that they were very opportunistic and they got the game from us, said Flames coach Bob Hartley. The Sharks had a 1:29 two-man advantage inside the games final five minutes but were unable to take advantage. With the Scotiabank Saddledome crowd buzzing, Calgary then went on the attack and eventually got a power play of their own with 1:19 left. But the Flames, who have made third-period comebacks their specialty all year, could not tie it this time despite pouring on the pressure by pulling Ramo to make it a 6-on-4 situation. The Flames led 1-0 after the first period but the lead evaporated on goals two minutes apart by San Jose to open up the second. At 0:33, Kris Russells attempt to clear the puck around the boards hit Wingels in the shin and caromed sharply into the slot to Braun, who quickly sent a backhand past Ramo. Then Flames defenceman Raphael Diaz whiffed on his attempt to clear away the puck, enabling Couture to steal it and dart to the net where he rang a backhand off the far goal post. You give up two quick goals, after we played such a good first period, the momentum changes a bit, said Flames centre Matt Stajan. Weve got to clean it up a bit at the start of periods. We cant let the other team take it to us like they did there.Calgary eventually tied it on Gaudreaus fifth goal at 17:49 of the second but they were not able to regain the lead. Its the first time all season the Flames have lost in a game in which they led after the first period (4-1-0).Its one of those things where weve been down quite a bit lately and weve got to find a way to get a lead and hold onto it at the end of the game. You cant always come back from a one or two goal deficit, said Flames defenceman T.J. Brodie.Calgary took a 1-0 lead to the first intermission thanks to a blast off the stick of Giordano at 17:32.It was the ninth goal and 28th point of the season for the Flames captain, who leads all NHL defencemen in scoring.Ramo had his six-game winning streak snapped to fall to 8-3-1. He made 27 saves.Niemi had 33 stops to improve to 11-7-3.Notes: Stajan (knee) returned to Calgarys line-up after missing 16 games. Also playing was Brian McGrattan, a healthy scratch the past seven games. Scratched forwards were Brandon Bollig and Sven Baertschi. ... San Joses Matt Nieto (undisclosed injury) did not play. Barclay Goodrow took his spot. ... John Scotts assist on Coutures goal was his first assist in 120 games. His last assist was Dec. 16, 2011. ... The Flames are 6-7-0 when trailing after two periods. ANAHEIM, Calif. - After some tough outings, R.A. Dickeys knuckleball was back to doing the kinds of things that leave hitters walking back to the dugout shaking their heads. Dickey scattered four hits over seven innings for his first victory in over a month, Jose Reyes homered and drove in three runs and the Toronto Blue Jays ended a season-worst five-game skid Tuesday night with a 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels. "I just wanted to keep them guessing, as far as the speed goes," Dickey said. "And the movement was very good. When it was leaving my hand, I could see visible that it was moving in multiple directions." Dickey (7-8) struck out five and walked one after losing his previous four starts. The 2012 NL Cy young Award winner got back in the win column for the first time since beating the Tigers on June 4. "It was rewarding because Ive been going over some things in the bullpen," he said. "When you have a good game, you certainly want to rejoice over that and not get too far ahead of yourself." Dickey allowed only two Angels to reach base through the first six innings. He gave up a one-out single to Erick Aybar in the second and a walk to Chris Iannetta two batters later before retiring Collin Cowgill on a flyball to end the threat. "I thought they would be a pretty patient team, not having seen the knuckleball this year at all. And they were. So I wanted to have a knuckleball that I could depend on for strikes," the 39-year-old right-hander said. "I tried to throw as many first-pitch strikes as I could — at least one of the first two pitches. That 74-mile-an-hour knuckleball was kind of my strike knuckleball tonight." Cowgill was the first of 12 consecutive outs for Dickey before Mike Trout doubled to left field with two outs in the sixth and was thrown out at third by Melky Cabrera. The Blue Jays climbed within 2 1-2 games of the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles, who were rained out at Washington. They also snapped a seven-game road losing streak and ended the Angels 11-game home winning streak, which fell one shy of the franchise record set in 1967. Tyler Skaggs (4-5) gave up three runs and 11 hits over 6 2-3 innings in his second start off the disabled list, after missing 23 games because of a right hamstring strain. The left-hander, pitching at Angel Stadium for the first time since May 20, is 0-4 with a 4.18 ERA in his last five starts overall. "I thought I threw the ball really well," said Skaggs, who beat the Blue Jays 5-3 on May 10 at Toronto. "When I faced them the last time, they were swinging early — and they kept swinging today. They swung the bats a lot better than Ive seen them in the past, and they put together good at-bats." Nolan Reimold, acquired Sunday off waivers from Baltimore, made his second start in right field as Jose Bautista remained at first base for the injured Edwin Encarnacion. Reimould doubled his first two times up. Reyes opened the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single that snapped Torontos 0-for-25 drought with runners in scoring position. Reyes increased the margin to 3-0, driving Skaggs 100th pitch into the left field bullpen with two outs in the seventh after a single by Munenori Kawasaki. Darin Martroianni added an RBI single in the eighth. NOTES: The Angels are going all out to help get RHP Garrett Richards the final spot on the AL All-Star squad through the internet fan balloting. During batting practice, they all wore black T-shirts with the hashtag: "VoteGRich" and 14 All-Star" in red lettering on the front — with his No. 43 on the backs. The grounds crew stenciled the hashtag on the infield dirt behind second base, behind the batters box, and on the back slope of the mound. ... Only one of Reyes last 53 home runs has come with more than one man on base — a three-run shot against Colorados Jeff Francis on Aug. 17, 2012, at Coors Field with the Miami Marlins. ... PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon maintains technology and not shorter games is key to attracting young fans to baseball. Maddons comments followed Monday nights 1-0 win over the New York Yankees, a game that lasted 3 hours, 28 minutes -- the longest nine-inning, 1-0 game by time in major league history. "I really think that if all were worried about is length of the game regarding attracting young fans, I think thats probably not the actual specific or most important reason," Maddon said. "Its a media-driven problem, I really believe that. I think to involve youngsters technologically speaking is much more important." Nine-inning games this season are averaging 3:03, according to STATS, up from 2:33 in 1981. "I believe you need to really focus on getting the kids more involved based on what kids are digging these days, and thats technology, their devices," Maddon said.dddddddddddd Maddon thinks Twitter and Skype would be good tools. "I think Skyping and getting kids to connect with players in an organization during the course of a school year primarily could really draw young people to an organization or a bunch of players," Maddon said. "Even one guy per week Skyped a classroom from each team, just think of the impact that would make. I think once a kid has been touched by an athlete, I dont care what sport its in, hes going to become a fan of that player and that team." Maddon thinks discussions on the matter are needed. "Somebody needs to sit down and really come up with an interactive kind of a situation in the ballpark or at home that engages youngsters, thats what Im looking at," he said. "Be more creative. Get us in touch with them, get players touching kids more technologically and youre going to get more fans." PITTSFORD, N.Y. - Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins is day to day after tests confirmed a diagnosis of bruised ribs, a person close to the situation told The Associated Press on Monday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team has not provided an update on the first-round draft pick since Watkins was hurt in a 19-16 preseason loss at Pittsburgh on Saturday. Coach Doug Marrone declined to provide a timetable and would only say Watkins would not practice on Monday, when the team returned to its training-camp facility in suburban Rochester. "Hes not practicing today, and Ill be ready to practice without him," Marrone said. "Hes not out there, and when he comes back, I dont know." Watkins agent Tory Dandy told the AP his client "will be fine" and described the injury as being "just a bruise." Dandy added Watkins could have returned during the game after being hurt on the opening drive. The receiver left the field holding his left side where he was kneed by leaping linebacker Ryan Shazier during a pass play. Watkins spent part of practice riding a stationary bike on the sideline. Its too early to determine whether Watkins will be cleared to play on Saturday, when Buffalo (1-2) hosts Tampa Bay (0-2). The Clemson product was a key off-season addition for the Bills. They traded their 2015 first-round draft pick to Cleveland in order to move up five spots and select Watkins with No. 4 pick. LONDON -- Ravel Morrisons skilful solo goal completed a 3-0 victory for West Ham over Tottenham in style on Sunday, ending a 14-year wait for a win at its London rival in the Premier League. Morrison picked up possession inside his own half and swept past both Michael Dawson and Jan Vertonghen before dinking the ball over goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the 79th minute. "That is a genius goal for me," West Ham manager Sam Allardyce said. "Youll struggle to see a better goal than that this season." The 20-year-old midfielder was offloaded by Manchester United in 2012 after then-manager Alex Ferguson lost patience with his off-field issues. Allardyce said Ferguson told him that "I hope you can sort him out but if you can he will be a genius," and that "he needs to get away from Manchester and start a new life." In London, Morrison is thriving. "The pennys dropped for him ... (with) his lifestyle and his attitude towards everybody and his timekeeping," Allardyce said. Allardyces ultra-defensive formation had seen West Ham struggle to threaten Tottenhams goal until Winston Reid stunned the home fans by scoring in the 66th minute. Then Ricardo Vaz Te fortuitously added another six minutes later, with the ball coming off his knee after Lloris blocked an initial shot. West Hams first win at White Hart Lane since 1999 lifted the team to 13th, while Tottenham fell out of the top four to sixth. "Its a wake-up call that we have to react to," Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas said. "We have to bounce back and I trust the team to do that." There was a heavy police presence inside the ground as part of a crackdown on racism. In last years fixture, abuse by West Ham fans put the spotlight back on the anti-Semitism faced by supporters of Tottenham, which has a strong Jewish fan base. Police threatened to take action against anyone who chanted "Yid," even if it was Tottenham supporters who use the term affectionately to deflect anti-Semitic abuse. But the term, often used as a derogatory term for Jews, was sung with gusto by Tottenham fans and one was arrested at halftime for using it. The Metropolitan Police said the man was held for causing harassment, alarm or distress. While Jermain Defoe started in place off-season recruit Roberto Soldado up front, the Tottenham threat was largely coming from Andros Townsend down the right flank. The winger came closest when he cut in and sent a dipping shot just over midway through the first half. An effort from Gylfi Sigurdsson was easily saved by Jussi Jasskelainen, Paulinho saw a rising shot blaze over the crossbar and also fired over on the volley. Yet West Ham could have ended the first half in front, with captain Kevin Nolan hooking the ball wide from a free kick. The breakthrough for West Ham came from Stewart Downings corner. Reids header was inadvertently blocked by teammate Nolan next to the line but he immediately sent the rebound into the net. Mark Noble then played a more intentional role in setting up West Hams second goal. Vaz Te latched onto Nobles through ball and after Lloris blocked the initial shot, it ricocheted off his knee into the net. Morrison then completed Tottenhams miserable afternoon with his solo goal. "Morrison picks the ball up in his own half and heads directly to Vertonghen and Dawson and slips them two like they werent there, waits for the goalkeeper to go down," Allardyce said. "He has shown how good he is at one-on-ones and how quick he is off the line and he uses his outstanding ability to dink him. ... There is a lot of praise that will come his way and deservedly so after that goal." Nike Air Max Belgie Online . - Steve Stricker usually doesnt show up at a tournament on Sunday. The two-time Olympic halfpipe gold medallist informed ESPN on Monday he plans to compete in Apsen, Colo.CLEVELAND -- Trevor Bauer walked into the Indians clubhouse lugging the javelin-like exercise bar he uses to warm up and zipped it inside a vinyl carrying case in his locker. He packed the Tigers away almost as easily. Bauer outpitched former Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander and tamed Detroits menacing lineup, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 6-2 win on Tuesday night. Bauer (1-1), recalled earlier in the day for his second start this season, held the ALs top hitting team to two runs and seven hits in six-plus innings. "He was aggressive, attacking the strike zone," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "He changed speeds and used all his pitches. Thats not the easiest assignment, coming up from Triple-A to face them. He really did a great job." Mike Aviles hit a two-run double in the second when the Indians scored four runs off Verlander (5-3), who didnt settle in until the damage was already done. David Murphy homered in the seventh for the last-place Indians, who can sweep the three-game series with the Central-leading Tigers on Wednesday. Torii Hunter and Alex Avila homered for Detroit, which has lost two straight road games after winning 11 in a row. The Indians were anxious to see how the head-strong 23-year-old Bauer, with the unorthodox warm-up routine and blazing fastball, would perform against a lineup featuring Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Hunter. Bauer has been dominating minor league hitters at Columbus, and had never faced any hitters of this calibre. He was more than up for the challenge. "It was nice to come out and do that," Bauer said. Obviously, it helped he was staked to an early four-run lead and Detroit leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler ran his club out of a potentially big inning in the fifth when he challenged left fielder Michael Brantley, who threw him out at second. Bauer held Hunter, Cabrera and Martinez to a combined 2 for 8, and he was helped by two double plays -- one he finished by covering first base on a close play to end the sixth. Trailing 5-2, the Tigers had runners at first and second with one out when Nick Castellanos hit grounder to first. The Indians got the force at second and Bauer hustled to first to get the return throw. Castellanos was ruled safe, but Francoona challenged the call, and after the umpires reviewed the video, it was overturned.dddddddddddd When Bauer was lifted for Bryan Shaw after giving up a leadoff single in the seventh, he received a standing ovation from the Progressive Field crowd. In his first season with Cleveland, Bauer made four starts but spent most of the year in the minors. The Indians werent always pleased with his attitude, but hes maturing just as they hoped. "Performing well is always pleasing, especially when the team gets the win and you can contribute to it," Bauer said. "That was the most frustrating thing for me last year, I would go out there and I didnt feel like I was contributing to a team win. Its nice to be able to do that this year." The Tigers were impressed with Bauer. "I saw him once or twice last year at Triple-A, so I knew hes got good stuff," Castellanos said. "What made him so tough tonight was he never made the same mistake twice. He kept us off-balance." Shaw pitched two perfect innings and Cody Allen worked a 1-2-3 ninth. The Indians grabbed a 5-1 lead in the second, when they collected three doubles, two singles and Michael Bourn caught Detroit napping and stole third. The unexpected outburst began with a base-running blunder as Carlos Santana singled off Cabreras glove at first but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Nick Swisher doubled and Yan Gomes walked before Aviles lined his two-run double into the gap in left-centre. Bourn followed with a double off the wall in right to score Aviles and Clevelands leadoff hitter alertly swiped third without a throw. Asdrubal Cabreras RBI single made it 4-1 and brought Tigers pitching coach Jeff Jones out to visit Verlander, who dropped to 9-11 with a 5.36 ERA in his career at Cleveland. NOTES: Indians 2B Jason Kipnis will begin a rehab assignment Friday at Triple-A Columbus. Kipnis has been on the disabled list since May 2 with an oblique injury and the club would like to get him in a few games before hes activated. If all goes well, Kipnis will be back for Mondays series opener in Chicago. ... Brantley has hit safely in 17 consecutive home games, one shy of the ballpark record shared by Kenny Lofton (1996) and Roberto Alomar (2000). NEW YORK -- Boston Red Sox centre fielder Jacoby Ellsbury has a broken right foot, leaving the AL East leaders without a key offensive catalyst as they try to wrap up the division title. Red Sox manager John Farrell says the team believes Ellsbury will be back this year, and hopes it will be during the regular season. But there is no specific timetable for his return, and the speedy leadoff hitter will keep wearing a protective boot on his injured foot for five days. Ellsbury had an MRI on Saturday and returned to Boston for further examination. Then he went to Colorado to get a second opinion from foot specialist Dr. Thomas Clanton at The Steadman Clinic. Farrell says tests confirmed the diagnosis of a compression fracture, which means its non-displaced. Ellsbury leads the majors with 52 stolen bases. He is batting .299 and has scored a team-high 89 runs. Discount Jordans . Jessup in his DeflateGate press conference, youre hardly alone. Your @#$-damn right, I deflated those footballs, I pictured Belichick screaming after getting sufficiently frustrated by a bunch of know-nothings who just dont understand what goes on in the NFL. Unlike Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, however, the worlds most envied football coach played the plausible-deniability card instead, probably a more prudent move considering his team is getting ready for the sports biggest stage, Super Bowl XLIX. I was shocked to learn of the footballs on Monday. I had no knowledge until Monday morning, Belichick claimed. Id say Ive learned a lot more about this process in the last three days than I knew, or had talked about it, in the last 40 years that Ive coached in this league. That put the ball in Tom Bradys court who decided to go the more flippant, frat-boy route, a tact which brings with it a little more peril. Sure its fun to troll an unknowing media gaggle blinded by its torches and pitchforks with testicle gags that would make Pete Schwetty proud, but anger the wrong person and all of a sudden the moral-compass crowd is climbing the worlds tallest soapbox to ask for suspension or even a ban. And when the low-information majority starts rolling downhill, you might as well get out of the way because its like Jim Brown bearing down on a crowned field. When I pick those footballs out, at that point, to me, theyre perfect, Brady said. I dont want anyone touching the balls after that. I dont want anyone rubbing them, putting any air in them, taking any air out. To me, those balls are perfect, and thats what I expect when I show up on the field. The more sophomoric of us quickly picked up on Bradys David Gregory-likee jabs at people so serious they had no idea they were the butt of the joke.dddddddddddd Already a few of those buzzkills have called for Belichick to be banned because Brady likes a lighter PSI than an arcane rule book permits as if the NFL wants the understudies performing in the worlds largest Broadway play. Some of them have even pointed to the now-famed Roger Goodell ignorance is no excuse, edict toward Sean Payton in Bountygate, as if consistent, standardized logic has anything to do with the NFL commissioner. Heres the reality: If Walt Anderson and other officials who handle the footballs each and every week cant discern the difference in PSI, how can it possibly matter all that much? Perhaps more importantly, if everyone thinks its so much easier to handle the football with a lower PSI, why isnt that the recommended inflation point for a league obsessed with offense? And if the proper PSI is so important to the integrity of the game and anyone in the sport actually cared, this would be the worlds easiest fix -- make everyone play with a brand new football right out of the box. Its 13.0 PSI for all. See how the quarterbacks in this league enjoy that little tweak. Bradys biggest mistake wasnt his love of a lower PSI, however, it was his nod to the Islamic-extremist group ISIS when trying to fight if off. Things are going to be fine -- this isnt ISIS, the former golden boy said. No ones dying. Except common sense. Invoking a bloodthirsty terrorist group to deflect this nonsense was as insensitive as it gets by Brady. And maybe the other side of the microphone, the reporters assembled who lobbed grenade after grenade at Brady for 30 minutes over a trivial matter, should learn something from his comments as well. When the crass meets the ignorant, we all lose. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Ten completions, four touchdowns.Kyle Orton didnt have to do much for the Buffalo Bills, not when the New York Jets had six turnovers — three each by Geno Smith and Michael Vick — in a 43-23 rout Sunday. He went out there, made his throws and threw for four touchdowns, Bills coach Doug Marrone said of Orton. He knew exactly what he wanted to do. When you have a veteran quarterback like that, hes going to make the right plays.Orton tied a career high with his four TD passes, and won for the third time in four games since replacing EJ Manuel as the starting quarterback for the Bills (5-3).Orton finished 10 of 17 for 238 yards, connecting with Robert Woods, Lee Smith, Scott Chandler and Sammy Watkins for scores.Watkins had three catches for 157 yards — but was embarrassed when he was caught from behind while celebrating early on what appeared would be a long TD. Without the injured Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller in the backfield, the Bills rushed for just 67 yards. But Stephon Gilmore, Preston Brown, Aaron Williams and DaNorris Searcy had interceptions for the Bills, who sent the struggling Jets (1-7) to their seventh straight loss.No doubt, our defence is incredible and one of the best in the league, Orton said. Any time your defence gets six turnovers, it makes your job easier. The Jets have lost seven in a row for the first time since 2005, in Herm Edwards final season as coach. Smith threw interceptions on three consecutive possessions in the first quarter and was pulled in favour of Vick, who was picked off once and lost two fumbles.Let me tell you, coach Rex Ryan said, Im getting sick and tired of the losing, thats for sure.New York announced after the game that Smith had X-rays on his right shoulder after the game, but did not immediately announce results. The injury was not believed to have affected Smiths performance. We didnt execute, Smith said. And when I say we, I mean myself because it was just atrocious the way I started out.Ryan didnt immediately announce whether Smith or Vick would start next week at Kansas City.Percy Harvin, acquired last weekend by the Jets from Seattle, caught three passes for 22 yards and had 28 yards rushing on four carries in his debut with New York.Buffalo got on the scoreboard on its first possession, with Orton zipping a pass to Woods for a 22-yard touchdown early in the first quarter.Smith then threw three straight interceptions and was benched after the Bills turned the last interception by Williams into a score one play later, on Lee Smiths 1-yard touchdown catch with 4:36 left in the opening quarter.Geno Smith finished 2 of 8 for 5 yards and the three interceptions as the Bills also became the first team to have that many in the first quarter since Arizona against Atlanta in 2012.Vick jogged onto the field to loud cheers from the MetLife Stadium crowd, which had booed Smith moments earlier, and led the Jets on a 13-play, 76-yard scoring drive — capped by the first of Chris Ivorys two 2-yard touchdown runs. But the Jets defence gave up a huge play on the Bills next possession as Watkins hauled in a long pass from Orton and took off down the field. But the rookie receiver looked up at the videoboard and pointed in premature celebration as New York wide receiver Saalim Hakim, put in on defence, caught him from behind. The play ended up as an 84-yard reception.I thought I was by myself and the guy ran me down and caught me, said Watkins, who later had a 61-yard TD catch. I was shocked. Two plays later, fullback Frank Summers pushed his way into the end zone from 2 yards to make it 21-7.It was a relief that we scored because I was upset, Watkins said. I know I wont let it happen again.Vick, 18 of 36 for 153 yards, was an early spark but wasnt without his share of mistakes. He had a 12-yard scramble negated by a questionable 15-yard taunting penalty when he spiked the ball on the sideline at the end of the run.Two plays later, he took off for a 5-yard run but had the ball knocked out of his hands by Nigel Bradham. We were able to score 20 points off those turnovers and thats what means the most, Marrone said. We had the potential to get more.NOTES: Orton last threw four TD passes with Denver against Kansas City in 2010. ... Dan Carpenter hit the left upright on the extra point following Watkins 61-yard TD. ... Vick finished with 69 yards on eight carries. ... Konerko had a big three-run double and Gordon Beckham homered for the second straight game, leading the Chicago White Sox to an 8-3 victory over the sliding Chicago Cubs.ORLANDO, Fla. -- A miserable season just keeps getting worse for the Philadelphia 76ers. Tobias Harris scored a career-high 31 points and the Orlando Magic beat the 76ers for the second time in less than a week, winning 92-81 Sunday night to extend Philadelphias losing streak to 14 games. The 76ers skid is their longest since 1994, when they lost 15 straight, and includes a defeat last Monday to the Milwaukee Bucks, the NBAs worst team. The 76ers have the NBAs second-worst record, while the Magic have the third-worst. Nikola Vucevic had 18 points and 17 rebounds for Orlando, which outscored Philadelphia 26-12 in the fourth quarter to earn the win. "It was definitely my mindset to attack them, put pressure on their defence," Harris said. "When I saw gaps in their defence, I wanted to attack them. They were focusing a lot on Nik tonight, so I saw a lot of openings spacing-wise that I used to my advantage." Both Orlando and Philadelphia have been clear that they are in rebuilding phases, and the 76ers traded two of their best players -- centre Spencer Hawes and guard-forward Evan Turner -- on Feb. 20. Philadelphia coach Brett Brown attributed the 76ers new-look lineup to their recent woes, pointing to it as a reason behind his squads spate of turnovers against Orlando. "We had 19 turnovers and six came from our point guards," Brown said. "A lot of that happened when we had three of five guys on the court who have only been with each other four days. Our offence hurt us more than our defence. "We were throwing the ball away or not knowing who to turn to.dddddddddddd We poked ourselves in the eye with our turnovers. But give Orlando credit for raising the intensity in the fourth quarter and bothering us." Thaddeus Young had 29 points for Philadelphia and Michael Carter-Williams added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Both teams played road games the night before, which might have contributed to sloppy in a game that featured two of the leagues top rookies: Carter-Williams and Orlandos Victor Oladipo. Carter-Williams leads all NBA rookies in points, rebounds, assists, steals and minutes played, is a front-runner to win the Rookie of the Year award, with Oladipo closely following him. Oladipo finished with nine points and Magic coach Jacque Vaughn admitted hes monitoring Oladipos minutes out of concern for fatigue. "Ill gauge his minutes to see how he feels," Vaughn said. "But hes been taking care of his body." NOTES: Magic guards Jameer Nelson (sore calf) and Arron Afflalo (illness) were out with injuries. It was the fifth game in a row Afflalo has missed, three with a sprained ankle and two with illness. . The Magic have a 15-15 record at home, thanks to winning seven of their last eight. . In their 14-game losing streak, Philadelphia has lost by an average of 16.8 points, with 11 of 14 of those losses coming by double digits. ... Even though the team that finishes with the leagues worst record increases its draft lottery chances, its no guarantee. The last team to finish with the worst record and secure the No. 1 pick was the Magic 10 years ago. They used that pick to select Dwight Howard. The 2014 NBA Draft will be a historic one for Canadian basketball, with as many as seven players from Canada - three of them as high as the first round - possibly selected. In the days leading up to the draft, TSN.ca and TSN Radio basketball analyst Duane Watson looks at some of the names that will be headlining the event. Watch the 2014 NBA Draft on TSN, Thursday at 7pm et/4pm pt. Name: Khem BirchFrom: Montreal, QuebecPlayed: University of Nevada, Las VegasHeight: 69"Weight: 209 Position: Power Forward2013-2014 Stats: 11.5 points per game, 10.2 rebounds, 3.8 blocks Breakout Game: 15 points, 15 rebounds, 6 blocks assists in win vs. Boise State on Feb 1.Accolades: 2013-14 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year, finished second in the nation in blocked shots per game.Draft Projection: Mid-late second round.Comparable NBA player: Chris Andersen Khem Birchs young basketball career has already been fuelled by some interesting decisions. Birch entered the NCAA ranks as the 11th-best high school player in the United States, and accepted a scholarship with the University of Pittsburgh. However, the Montreal native controversially left Pitt only 10 games into his freshman season. At the point of his departure, he earned a spot in the starting line up and showed glimpses of the defence and athleticism that made him a blue chip prospect. Yet after citing team issues of selfishness, he returned home to figure out his next move, which would eventually lead him to transfer to UNLV. Birch played two seasons at UNLV, his first coinciding with Toronto native Anthony Bennetts standout freshman campaign that culminated in his first overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Bennett outshined Birch with his dominant play and impressive stat line, yet Birch was named Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year. This season with Bennett out of the picture, Birch almost doubled his scoring (7.5 ppg to 11.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.7 rpg to 10.2 rpg) averaging a double-double, and again winning Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honours. Despite improvement across the board Birch is very much a raw athlete, and instead of spending another year at school to work on his offensive game, he declared for the 2014 NBA Draft. Birchs strength is his defence. His 71" wingspan placed him second in the NCAA in blocked shots behind fellow Canadian Jordan Bachynski at a clip of 3.8 per game. His quickness and mobility make him a strong rim protector and help defender where his tenacity on defence cant be overlooked, tallying 1.2 steals per game. Offensively, he can run the floor and moves well without the ball, but is very limited in terms of offensive moves. His inability to create his own shot, coupled with his slight build will make it hard for him to maintain position in the low post. Quite simply, Birch will have to bulk up, which will help him on the defensive end as well. A great athlete with a high motor equals lots of upside, yet hes still a project. If an NBA team wants to develop him and help round out his game, its not a risk, but a long-term investment. It would be an interesting choice, however thats something that Birch is not averse to. The former France forward, whose career has been marred by controversies, was suspended last month for performing a gesture which is known in France as a "quenelle" and regarded as anti-Semitic. Anelka said on his Twitter account on Friday that he decided to leave the club because he could not accept West Broms conditions for being allowed back into the squad. "Proposals have been made for me to rejoin the group under certain conditions that I cant accept," Anelka said in French on his 35th birthday. "Wishing to keep my integrity, I took the decision to free myself and end the contract linking me with West Bromwich Albion until 2014, with immediate effect." In January, Anelka hinted that he could end his career at the end of the season but also mentioned interests from clubs including Lazio in signing him. Anelka performed the quenelle as he celebrated scoring in West Broms 3-3 draw with West Ham last December. The gesture involves pointing one straightened arm downward while touching the shoulder with the opposite hand. It was popularized by French comedian Dieudonne MBala MBala, who has been convicted for inciting racial hatred and anti-Semitism. After his suspension was announced at the end of last month, both Anelka and West Brom decided not to appeal the sanction. In Anelkas witness statement, the striker said he became aware of Dieudonne in about 20000, met him once, and watched recordings of his shows.ddddddddddddHe said he made the gesture "purely to say hello to my friend." Anelka, who had previously been photographed performing the salute, joined West Brom last summer after two disappointing seasons at Shanghai Shenhua and Juventus. The former Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Bolton and Chelsea player is one of the most talented and controversial players France has produced since former Manchester United great Eric Cantona. After growing up in a Parisian suburb, Anelka started his career at Paris Saint-Germain and was quickly spotted by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who signed him in 1997. Known for his immense technical skills, Anelka played a big part in the Gunners winning both the Premier League and the FA Cup but missed out on a place in the France team that won the 1998 World Cup. Anelkas sometimes nonchalant attitude and apparent lack of commitment to the team started to anger the Arsenal fans, who gave him the nickname "Le Sulk." Anelka then joined Real Madrid, where he won the Champions League, before moving to PSG, Liverpool, Manchester City, Fenerbahce and Bolton. The much-travelled Frenchman then struck up an electric partnership with Didier Drogba at Chelsea, winning the Premier League title and two FA Cups with the Blues. Anelka caused the biggest controversy of his career with the French national team, when he was sent home from the 2010 World Cup after insulting then-coach Raymond Domenech in the dressing room. The stubborn Anelka refused to apologize and ended his international career in the wake of the scandal with 14 goals in 69 appearances. HOUSTON -- The Houston Rockets were on the verge of their third straight home loss after blowing a double-digit, second-half lead for the second consecutive game. This time, guard James Harden said, the Rockets found the will to win. Jeremy Lin scored 31 points off the bench, Dwight Howard had 18 points and 24 rebounds, and the Rockets beat the Toronto Raptors 110-104 in double-overtime to snap a two-game losing streak. "(This game) was something," Houston coach Kevin McHale said. "We still are a little bit in the mud, but the guys came out defensively and did a really good job. We were grinding. We just found a way to win. Thats just kind of what we had to do." Lin shot 10 of 17 from the field and hit 8 of 9 from the free throw line. Harden finished with 26 points and 10 assists. Howard was just 4 of 12 at the foul line. Chandler Parsons had 18 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Rockets. Lin was the first player to score 30-plus points off the bench for Houston since Chase Budinger had 30 points against Cleveland on Feb. 23, 2011. "Midway through the third I was feeling pretty good," Lin said. "I got in my rhythm. I got a few shots to go down. Everything just kind of slowed down." Rudy Gay led the Raptors with 29 points and 10 rebounds but shot 11 of 37 from the field. DeMar DeRozan added 22 points, but he struggled as well, finishing 6 of 25. Jonas Valanciunas chipped in 10 points and 13 rebounds, Amir Johnson had 10 points and 10 boards, and Kyle Lowry netted 16 for Toronto, who shot 33 per cent from the field. "I love the way we fought," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. "Anybody that didnt appreciate that, we had 30 more attempts. How many times have you seen that? We just have to make shots. We only shot 25 per cent in the first half, and we got back in the game with our defence." After Harden missed a jumper, Howard grabbed a rebound and gave it to Terrence Jones for a layup to give the Rockets a 106-104 lead with 1:13 to go in the second overtime. Gay missed a jumper, and Johnson missed the tip on the other end before Lin hit a floater with 33 seconds left to give the Rockets a four-point lead. Gay missed another jumper, and after review, Houston was awarded the ball with 26 seconds left. Patrick Beverley made one of two free throws with 20 seconds left, and Gay missed a 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining. Harden made one of two free throws to push the lead to six and ice the win. "We lost two at home," Harden said. "We cant lose three in a row at home. We are too much of a good team to lose three games. We did whatever it took to pull it out tonight." Harden scored seven of the Rockets first nine points in the second overtime, but Gay tied it at 104 with a 3-point play with 1:50 to go. Gay tied the score at 95 in the first overtime, hitting a tough 3-pointer from the top of the top of the arc with 0.9 seconds remaining, and Lin missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to a second extra period. "We fought with them obviously through two overtimes, and shots that we usually hit werent falling," Gay said. "You could say fatigue or a lot of different things, but they are a great team, and they played well. I just wish I wouldve hit the easy ones and maybe things wouldve worked out differently." Trailing 80-66 after Lins layup with 8:32 remaining in the fourth, Toronto knotted the score at 84 six minutes later on Terrence Rosss follow shot, capping an 18-4 run. Harden made one of two free throws to tie it at 87 with 34 seconds remaining before Gay missed a jumper with 12 seconds left, but the referees called a 24-second violation, saying the ball never hit the rim. After review, the ball hit the rim, and the officials jumped it up at midcourt, with the Rockets winning it, but Hardens jumper at the buzzer was short, sending the game to overtime. "It was a long, intense game," Harden said. "I think in the first half we did a great job defending. They only had 33 points at the half, but in the second half, we let up. Gave them confidence early in the second half when they started making shots. We have to battle it out and fight it out." NOTES: Toronto forward Steve Novak missed Mondays game with back spasms. . Happ tries to win for the fifth time in six starts tonight when the Toronto Blue Jays continue a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins. Happ bounced back from an ugly loss to Kansas City to win in Detroit on Thursday, as he held the Tigers to three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings to improve to 5-2 to go along with a 4.12 ERA. In two games (1 start) versus the Twins, Happ is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA. After getting shut out in back-to-back games Toronto seemed to get back on track in Mondays opener, as Kevin Pillar singled home pinch-runner Erik Kratz in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Blue Jays to a 5-4 win. The Twins erased a 4-2 deficit in the top of the ninth, but Matt Guerrier (0-1) walked the leadoff batter, Dioner Navarro, who was replaced by Kratz. After Anthony Gose struck out on a failed bunt attempt, Casey Fien took over for Guerrier. Jose Reyes then lined a single to right field -- his third hit of the game -- and Pillar followed with a blooper to right to score Kratz and end the Blue Jays two-game skid. Edwin Encarnacion blasted a three-run homer for AL East-leading Toronto, which was coming off conseccutive 5-0 losses to St.dddddddddddd Louis over the weekend. Danny Santana and Brian Dozier clubbed back-to-back homers off Toronto starter R.A. Dickey to begin the game, but the knuckleballer settled down to pitch into the sixth inning. "The more aggressive I became, the better result I started having," Dickey said. Kurt Suzuki had three hits in Minnesotas fourth loss in five games. Toronto could stay in the win column on Tuesday, as it goes up against Twins righty Kevin Correia, who is a miserable 2-7 with a 6.11 ERA. Correia couldnt hold a four-run lead on Thursday against Milwaukee and fell for the fourth time in five decisions, as he allowed five runs and 10 hits in five innings. As bad as hes been, though, the Twins dont plan on moving him from the rotation anytime soon. "Kevins one of our starters," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Hes paid good money to do that, and hes still gonna get paid no matter what, so hes one of our starters. We need him to be more consistent." Correia is 1-3 with a 6.48 ERA in six games (4 starts) against Toronto. Minnesota won two of three when these teams squared off in April. CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The New Orleans Saints will have to wait another week for a chance to clinch a playoff spot. It will be their last chance. The Saints needed a win over the Panthers to wrap up the NFC South and a first-round bye. Or, at the very least, an Arizona loss to clinch a playoff spot. They got neither. Instead, the Saints headed back to the Big Easy knowing they will need to beat Tampa Bay next week to qualify for the post-season following a 17-13 loss at Carolina on Sunday. They can also qualify if Arizona loses or San Francisco loses twice. "Right now just trying to take this, because its obviously tough with so much on the line for us personally," Saints tight end Jimmy Graham said. "... Obviously we have to play better and we just have to finish. When you are up like that you want to win those tight ones. When you want to get into the playoffs you cant lose those." Drew Brees called the loss "painful," but said the key is to take from the positives. "Its all out there in front of us," Brees said. "Obviously, we need some help in order to win the division and be the two seed, but the fact of the matter is all we can worry about is what is ahead of us." Carolina (11-4) can wrap up the NFC South and a first-round bye in the playoffs with a win next Sunday at Atlanta. The Saints would win the division if they beat the Buccaneers and Carolina loses to the Falcons. The manner in which the Saints lost was particularly tough. Cam Newton, who had struggled all afternoon, threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Domenik Hixon with 23 seconds left to get the Panthers their first playoff berth since 2008 before more than 70,000 rain-drenched fans. Newton had been limited to 116 yards passing in the games 59 minutes. But the defence, dominant all day, gave him one last chance to win by forcing the Saints to go three-and-out. Newton took over at the Carolina 35 trailing 13-10 with 55 seconds left, no timeouts, a sore ankle and his best receiver, Steve Smith, on the sideline with a knee injury. He dug in and completed a 37-yard pass to Ted Ginn Jr. to quickly get the Panthers in field goal range. Then he connected with Greg Olsen for 14 yard. After Newton spiked the ball, Hixon made a diving catch in the left side of the end zone, cradling the ball in his chest after beating cornerback Corey White. The catch set off a huge celebration that left the stadium shaking. "I was 99 per cent sure it was a catch," Hixon said with a grin. The seldom-used Hixon came into the game with just three catches for 21 yards on the season. "Cam was very resilient," coach Ron Rivera said. "He struggled all day and he knows that. But he came through when we needed him." Carolinas defence kept the team in the game while the offence struggled, intercepting Brees twice and sacking him six times to avenge a 31-13 loss two weeks ago. Middle linebacker Luke Kuechly had 24 tackles — tying an NFL record, according to STATS — and an interception while building his case for Defensive Player of the Year, and Greg Hardy had three sacks going up against rookie left tackle Terron Armstead. "Theyre a good pass-rushing team," Brees said. "They did a good job of applying the pressure at times. They did a good job of covering some things downfield when we were trying to push the ball downfield. Maybe the result of that ended up being having to hold the ball a little bit longer and take sacks." New Orleans took the lead with 6:37 left after Brees drove his team 97 yards in 11 plays, connecting on a 5-yard pass to Graham on a jump ball in the end zone. Graham caught three passes for 62 yards, including a 46-yard reception, on the series. NOTES: Smith injured a knee ligament and he will need an MRI on Monday. MIAMI -- Cleveland Browns and former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess was arrested Friday on charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer at an airport, the latest in a series of personal problems for the NFL player. According to a Broward Sheriffs Office arrest report, Bess was approached by Deputy Thomas OBrien inside the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport terminal because he was "acting irrationally, dancing, singing with his pants repeatedly falling down." "I inquired if he was all right and received no response," OBrien said in the report, adding later that Bess "appeared to be looking through me" while they talked. Bess, 28, then picked up a cup of hot coffee from a counter and squeezed it, "which caused the cup to break with the liquid going all over my uniform," the deputy wrote. Bess then took up a "fighting stance," and OBrien said he hit the player on the leg with a baton to no effect. "Bess proceeded to take off his shirt and once again took up a fighting stance refusing my repeated orders to get on the ground," OBrien said, adding that Bess was finally taken into custody when backup officers arrived. Sheriffs office records show that Bess is charged with simple assault on an officer, resisting arrest without violeence and disorderly conduct.dddddddddddd It was not immediately clear whether Bess had a lawyer. Browns spokesman Zak Gilbert said the team was aware of the arrest and was gathering information. Bess was released Friday morning on $100 bail. The three charges are all misdemeanours. He did not comment about the substance of the charges to waiting television news crews. The Browns signed Bess last year to a three-year, $11.5 million contract after acquiring him from the Dolphins. This season Bess had career lows with 42 catches for 362 yards. The arrest comes one day after Bess posted a photo on his Twitter page of a small package containing what appears to be marijuana. The photo was later deleted. Last month, a photo posted on Bess Instagram account showed him lighting a cigar or marijuana joint next to a photo of late reggae star Bob Marley, a Rastafarian flag around his shoulders. On Dec. 19, the Browns placed Bess on the reserve/non-football illness list for what were described as personal reasons. He missed the final two games of the season. Bess spent five seasons with the Dolphins. His best year was in 2010, when he caught 79 passes for 820 yards and five touchdowns. On Thursday, a judge said Varlamov could be released if he posted $5,000 bond and be allowed to travel with the team but he was ordered to stay away from his girlfriend, among other restrictions.Government officials in Washington state, home to four Western Hockey League teams, have been investigating the working conditions of the teams mostly-teenaged players over the past year, TSN has learned. Matthew Erlich, a spokesman for Washingtons Department of Labor and Industry, told TSN that officials recently referred the case to the state attorney generals office and added that the labor department is waiting for a legal opinion from the attorney general before pursuing its investigation further. "This is a matter that focuses on child labor issues and potential wage-payment claims, both are important at labor and industries, where our top important goal is to ensure workplaces are safe," Erlich said. "Employees should also be paid for the work they do." Over the past few months, the debate over whether major junior hockey players should receive more money for playing has become a polarizing one. On one side, team owners say players receive modest reimbursements for their expenses, as well as a lucrative scholarship package that can be exercised so long as they dont go on to a career as a pro hockey player. Moreover, many teams in small markets are struggling to get by, the owners say. "Our teams in Washington and Michigan have been in contact with government officials and have explained that our players are student athletes and are participating in and contribute to their sport the same way as other amateur athletes," Canadian Hockey League commissioner David Branch told TSN. But officials with Unifor, Canadas largest private-sector union, paint a different picture. They say major junior hockey teams have become cash machines and that any problems that small market teams might have can easily be solved with revenue sharing. Unifor is pressing the Ontario provincial government to form task forces to scrutinize the working conditions in the Canadian Hockey League. Unifor president Jerry Dias hopes other governments follow suit. To that end, Dias met Tuesday with B.C. Premier Christy Clark, making his case for government action. "She was shocked," Dias said. "We explained that in the Western Hockey League, players are still making $50 a week, same as they did in the 1980s. Its just not right. These clubs are being run as for-profit businesses, and so little of the money finds its way to the players. Its basically slave labour." The stakes are high for CHL team owners. Dias said an average 40-hour work week addds up to about 2,000 hours a year.dddddddddddd If players in Ontario were paid the minimum wage of $11 per hour for half the year, it would work out to about $11,000 per player, or at least $220,000 a year for each team. Its unclear how much teams now pay for players, but in recent years, the OHL paid players $55 a week. The league recently introduced new guidelines where teams reimburse players for expenses instead of paying them a set weekly amount. Eight of the CHLs 60 teams are based in the U.S. The four teams in Washington are the Everett Silvertips, the Seattle Thunderbirds, the Spokane Chiefs and the Tri-City Americans. In the OHL, the Plymouth Whalers and Saginaw Spirit are in Michigan. If players on U.S.-based teams were declared by the government to be employees, instead of student athletes, as the CHL says they are, they might also have more rights under worker compensation laws. One CHL team owner said that he has been in touch with his local member of provincial parliament to caution that if the governments do change their policies on major junior hockey, it might have a ripple effect on sports across the country. "If we have to pay minimum wage, then other junior leagues, Junior B and Junior C leagues, will have to do the same thing," said the owner, who asked for anonymity because he said CHL team owners have agreed that Branch will speak publicly for the group about the issue. "Maybe it will apply to Canadian universities that charge admission for sports games. It could have a huge effect." But that might not be completely true. Theres a difference between a Junior B hockey player or Canadian university player and a player in major junior - teams in major junior hold a draft and control for years the rights of a player. The players dont choose where to play. "It should not come as a surprise that team owners are active in their communities and some may be in contact with elected officials at all levels to express their views on range of issues," Branch said. "Any change to the status of CHL hockey players would undoubtedly impact all other amateur athletes in our country, regardless of what sport they participate in," he said. "For all of these sports there are multiple complicated questions regarding expenses and the status of student athletes and other amateur athletes, all of which have the potential to impact on numerous sports programs in Ontario and throughout Canada." With all eyes on the Grey Cup in Regina, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue their search for a new head coach and it appears some names are beginning to surface. According to the Edmonton Sun, Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterbacks coach Khari Jones is the favourite to be hired for the position after the Grey Cup. The Blue Bombers must wait until after Sundays game to ask permission to speak to Jones but that may not be their only phone call. The Sun also reports that Hamilton Tiger-Cats head U.S. scout Danny McManus is also on the Blue Bombers radar. The report indicates that McManus may be in the running to become the teams assistant general manager. Currently, Kyle Walters is the Blue Bombers acting genereal manager but the interim tag may be removed in the near future, paving the way for new hires. Walters and McManus were teammates with the Tiger-Cats and Jones and McManus worked together on the Hamilton staff in recent years. Meanwhile, the Winnipeg Free Press reports the Blue Bombers have asked permission to speak to Toronto Argonauts special-teams co-ordinator Mike OShea about the position. When asked about the report, Argonauts general manager Jim Barker told the Free Press, "Its not my place to divulge that." Wholesale Air Jordan 13 . And Canadians have bought in, consuming the games on radio and television, mounting flags to their cars and following the news from Brazil with great anticipation throughout. Theres only been one thing missing for fans in this country – Canada. No matter how big a soccer fan you are, theres just no doubt the tournament would take on a different kind of appeal if Canada had a stake in the game. The diversity of teams being followed across the country over the past month is a reflection of the mosaic that is Canada, which is fine. But wouldnt it be a heck of a lot more fun if we all had a common rallying point, from one coast to another? Our struggles in mens soccer are well documented, with just one World Cup appearance in 1986, despite the fact that participation levels for soccer players in Canada surpassed hockey during the late stages of the last century. The national mens team is currently tied with Bahrain for 110th in the world. Fortunately, the state of things in the womens game couldnt be more different. Which is why there will be a much different dynamic surrounding the 2015 FIFA Womens World Cup which will take place next summer in Canada. For while this will be a tournament about hosting the world in a global game at venues in Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal, Moncton, Winnipeg and Edmonton next June and July, it will also be about showcasing and getting behind Canadians in the sport of soccer. Team sports tend to get overshadowed at the Olympics. But there is no doubt the most compelling story of the 2012 Summer Games in London was Canada winning bronze in womens soccer. The Canadian women losing in dramatic -- and controversial -- fashion against the United States, and subsequently defeating France to win a medal were two of the most memorable international sporting moments in recent Canadian history. Throw in the fact Canada possesses a world-class star player in Christine Sinclair and you have the kind of dynamics behind which an entire country can rally. Canada currently ranks seventh in womenss soccer worldwide, ahead of such traditional soccer nations as England, Italy and the Netherlands, countries our men couldnt touch on their best days.ddddddddddddSo the optimism about what Canada might accomplish is based on more than just the 2012 Olympic result and the fact that the tournament will be played here. At the top of the heap in womens soccer is the United States which, besides being the tournament favourite, also represents Canadas greatest rival. What will it be like when Canada and the U.S. play next summer? What kind of television audience will it draw? Well consider the factors that could make this one of the marquee events on the Canadian sporting calendar next season. First, the proximity of the U.S.to Canada means the U.S. will have a strong contingent of supporters along with them. Then there is the recent history, the bitterness of the Canadians and the raw feelings over the manner in which they were defeated by the U.S in London. Throw in the fact that the Canadian team is comprised almost exclusively of players who got their training in the U.S. and you can understand why the familiarity of this rivalry makes it so intense. But the real payoff to having the Womens World Cup is what it may mean to the sport of womens soccer in Canada in general. Weve seen the effect that the womens national hockey team has had on the growth of the sport among young girls and women. By its very nature, soccer is a more accessible sport than hockey, which means the potential to seed future generations of womens soccer players is immense. Its one thing to present the worlds game to Canadians and tell them to pick a country to get behind. Its something completely different, and far, far more compelling to tell them they can get behind their own. Soccer isnt a new game in Canada, and from widespread participation to the emergence of Major League Soccer in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal to the technology that allows fans to follow it around the globe, its become a significant part of the sporting fabric of Canada. But safe to say we have never experienced the sport like we will next summer. DUNEDIN, Fla. -- John Gibbons asked for strike-throwers and Drew Hutchison obliged Friday. The 23-year-old right-hander, continuing to make a strong case to become Torontos fourth starter, threw 4 2/3 strong innings in the Blue Jays 3-1 exhibition loss to the Boston Red Sox. Hutchison, who was tagged with the loss, gave up one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. He retired the first eight Red Sox he faced and threw 71 pitches with 51 strikes. "An outstanding outing," said Jays catcher Dioner Navarro. "A great performance," echoed Gibbons, who nevertheless was coy on what might lie ahead for Hutchison. Pressed by reporters, Gibbons allowed: "Hes doing everything he needs to do." Hutchison returned from Tommy John surgery last fall, pitching in the Arizona Fall League. He seems on top of his game this spring. Hutchison showed his mettle in the fourth inning Friday, striking out Mike Napoli to end the inning after a lengthy at-bat that saw the Red Sox hitter foul off a number of pitches. The Jays pitcher hit 95 miles per hour during the confrontation. "Hes got more than I thought he did," said Gibbons. "And he can pop it up pretty good -- with command. Which makes the guys that are really good really good." This spring Hutchison has given up three runs and seven hits in 9 2/3 innings while striking out 16 and walking one. Opposing batters are hitting just .200 against him. Hutchison made 11 starts for the Jays in 2012 (going 5-3 with a 4.60 ERA) before injuring his arm while warming up in the bullpen for a game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Throwing strikes is his modus operandi. "Thats what he does. He was good when he was here the first time before he got hurt," said Gibbons. "Thats how he pitches. The key is just being healthy." The same can be said for J.A. Happ, another would-be starter who returned Friday from an ailing back. The six-foot-six left-hander pronounced himself happy with a three-inning performance in a minor-league game. He gave up one hit, walked one and struck out two. "It was good. Exciting," said Happ. "I felt normal out there which is really nice." Said Gibbons: "I heard he pitched really well." A gaggle of pitchers is trying to join R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle and Brandon Morrow in the Jays rotation. Barring a trade, Nos. 4 and 5 will come from Hutchison, Happ, Ricky Romero, Esmil Rogers, Todd Redmond, Kyle Drabek, Marcus Stroman and Sean Nolin. Of the three main contenders, Hutchison appears to have pitched his way into the rotation. Romero is turning heads with his improved performance this spring. But Happ has had an uneasy pre-season. In two starts, he has given up six runs in just 1 1/3 innings. The back issue has further muddied the waters. Gibbons, who had yet to speak to Happ following the minor-league outing, said the major issue was making sure Happs back was healthy. Happ, in speaking to reporters, said the back was fine. The lines of communication within the Jays on Happ seem a little blurry in general. The pitcher seemed unhappy with GM Alex Anthopoulos answer late last week on whether there were one or two spots open in the starting rotation. "There could be two," Anthopoulos said at the time." I think were going to take the best team north. Especially right now, we have J.A. (Happ) and the back, the performance, things like that, we have to get him on track, stay healthy. "Obviously R.A., Mark and Brandon. Again, we expect J.A. to be in the rotation but at the same time the backs flared up on him twice. I just dont know. Look, if guys perform well and they force our hand, well take the best team." Asked on Friday if he had something to prove in the wake of those words, Happ replied: "I dont have any comment on that. My comment is no comment. "That was probably disappointing to hear but theres nothing I want to say about it." Happ has campaigned to be a starter since arriving here via trade and the issue appears to have left a chip on his shoulder. Last spring he found himself on the outside of the rotation looking in, until Romero pitched his way out of it. Happ eventually went 5-7 with a 4.56 ERA in 18 starts last year in a season disrupted by a nasty setback. Hit in the head by a ball off the bat of Desmond Jennings in a May game with the Tampa Bay Rays, he was out for three months with a skull fracture and a sprained right knee from when he toppled to the ground. While the Red Sox didnt bring all of their starters Friday, their lineup did included Mike Carp, Napoli and Jonny Gomes in the meat of the order. Boston finally got to Hutchison in the fifth. Gomes singled and came home on Corey Browns double to deep centre. The relay throw by Ryan Goins was a little high, allowing Gomes to score. The Red Sox added two more in the eighth before Jonathan Diaz scored on a Kevin Pillar double in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-1. Boston starter Clay Buchholz was also impressive, holding the Jays scoreless on two hits in four innings. After giving up two singles to open the first inning, he retired 11 straight for the win. The 29-year-old right-hander went 9-0 with a 1.71 earned-run average ERA in his first 12 starts last season before going on the disabled list for more than three months with shoulder and neck problems. He returned in September, finishing with a 12-1 mark and 1.74 ERA. The loss was the third straight for Toronto, which slipped to 6-9. Boston improved to 7-8. ST. JOHNS, N.L. - Craig Cunningham scored a short-handed goal as the Providence Bruins edged the St. Johns IceCaps 3-2 in American Hockey League action Tuesday. The Bruins opened the scoring 27 seconds into the second period when Nick Johnson passed out front and Lindblad scored a low one-time slapshot. The IceCaps equalized when Jerome Samson fired a point shot, which was tipped home by Lowry with lots of traffic in front of the net 4:33 into the second period on the power play. Cunningham scored with a high blocker backhand on a shorthanded breakaway at the 11:10 mark of the third period. The Bruins took a two-goal lead when Camara tapped the puck into a practically-empty net, as IceCaps goalie Michael Hutchinson was caught out of position 15:07 into the third. Bautista cleared the bases with a double in the seventh inning off Chicago reliever Neil Ramirez to help Toronto (75-69) win its third straight game. Kevin Pillar and Edwin Encarnacion had three hits apiece for the Blue Jays, who turned the game into a rout with a five-run eighth inning. Toronto outhit Chicago 14-11 and will go for the three-game sweep on Wednesday night. It was an uneven performance from Buehrle (12-9), who allowed two earned runs and 10 hits but managed to avoid giving up a big inning. Aaron Sanchez and Daniel Norris each worked an inning of relief. The Blue Jays entered play five games behind Seattle in the race for the final wild-card spot in the American League. Toronto has won eight of 10 to keep its faint playoff hopes alive. The Cubs, who have dropped five games in a row, left 11 runners on base. Buehrle fanned leadoff man Chris Coghlan on three pitches to kick off the game on a cool, comfortable summer evening. Javier Baez followed with a double, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jorge Soler. Chicago (64-81) loaded the bases in the second inning after Buehrle gave up three singles. The veteran left-hander got out of the jam when Coghlan grounded out. Buehrle kept putting runners on but the defence did a nice job bailing him out. Welington Castillo led off the fourth with a single before Mike Olt and Arismendy Alcantara hit back-to-back line drives that were speared by third baseman Danny Valencia. Chris Valaika moved Castillo to second base with another single but Matt Szczur popped up to Buehrle to end the threat. Encarnacion drove a ball off the top of the wall to open the Toronto half of the fourth but settled for a long single. Adam Lind drew a walk but Dioner Navarro couldnt advance the runners, swinging at a 3-0 pitch and popping up in the infield. Valencia nearly put the Jays on the board but his line drive was snagged by a fully stretched Valaika at first base. Valaika threw to second to easily double off Encarnacion. The Cubs put runners on again in the fifth and this time cashed in a run. Baez singled and cleanup hitter Luis Valbuena was hit by a pitch. Castillo drove in Baez with a two-out single before Olt struck out. The Blue Jays tried a more aggressive style against Chicago starter Jake Arrieta in the bottom half of the frame. Pillar led off with a single but was thrown out trying to steal. Ryan Goins then drove a ball into left-centtre field and hustled into second base just ahead of Coghlans throw.dddddddddddd Anthony Gose tried to bunt with two strikes but fouled a pitch for the second out. Goins moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored when Jose Reyes hit a flare that dropped in shallow centre field. Arrieta was wide with a pickoff attempt and the ball rolled into foul territory, allowing Reyes to scamper all the way to third. He was left stranded when Bautista flew out, with the Toronto slugger angrily slamming his bat to the turf as he left the batters box. The Cubs stranded two more runners in the sixth inning after Szczur and Coghlan reached on back-to-back two-out singles. Pitching coach Pete Walker came out to the mound and Buehrle responded by freezing Baez with a fastball for the strikeout. Pillar stroked a one-out single in the seventh to knock Arrieta out of the game. Ramirez (2-2) came on in relief and gave up a single to pinch-hitter Colby Rasmus and a walk to pinch-hitter Munenori Kawasaki. Ramirez fanned Reyes and worked a full count on Bautista before the Toronto slugger hit his 26th double of the season. The Blue Jays piled on in the eighth against right-hander Brian Schlitter. Lind led off with a triple and was replaced by pinch-runner Steve Tolleson, who scored on a Navarro single. Navarro moved to third on a Valencia double and Rasmus was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs. Kawasaki hit a two-run single to help put the game out of reach. Arrieta allowed seven hits, two earned runs and a walk while striking out five. Buehrle had three strikeouts and didnt walk a batter. STUTTGART, Germany -- Roberto Bautista Agut and Lukas Rosol reached the final of the Mercedes Cup with victories over the top two seeds in the semifinals on Saturday. Bautista Agut of Spain defeated defending champion and top seed Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-3, 6-4, then Czech player Rosol beat the second-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-6 (3), 6-2. No. 3 seed Bautista Agut won almost three quarters of his service points and saved five break points for victory in 1 hour, 14 minutes. The Spaniard was leading 4-1 in the first set when play was suspended for 40 minutes due to rain. BALTIMORE -- A reversed call got the uprising started. Then came a walk after the Detroit Tigers were down to their last strike. That forced Tommy Hunter to go up against Miguel Cabrera, perhaps the last person a struggling closer wants to face with the outcome hanging in the balance. Cabrera hit a hanging curveball over the centre-field wall for a three-run homer, and the Tigers rallied past the Baltimore Orioles 4-1 on Tuesday night. After being held scoreless on three hits over the first eight innings, the Tigers improved to 1-12 when trailing after eight innings. "You never know in baseball," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. "When the top of our order swings the bat, we can score some runs quickly." Hunter held a 1-0 lead before giving up a leadoff single to Alex Avila. Pinch-runner Rajai Davis was called out trying to steal, but Ausmus challenged the call and after looking at the replay, umpires called Davis safe at second. "The instant replay was probably the turning point, I guess," Ausmus said. Hunter (1-1) got two straight outs before working the count on Torii Hunter to 1-2. The at-bat ended in a walk. "You cant let arguably one of the best hitters in the game come to the plate," Tommy Hunter said. "Youve got to throw a strike right there and I missed." Two pitches later, Cabrera connected. "Its a chance that we win or were going to lose," Cabrera said. "You dont have to think too much of it. Youve got to go out there and try and see what happens." Victor Martinez followed Cabreras sixth home run with a shot to right that landed on Eutaw Street beyond the scoreboard in right field. Justin Miller (1-1) pitched one inning to earn his first big league win and Joe Nathan got three outs for his ninth save. Nathan has seven saves and a 0.00 ERA in his last eight outings. Adam Jones hit a first-inning homer for the Orioles, who have dropped three in a row following a five-game winning streak. Jones has five home runs, four in the last seven games. Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez gave up three hits, walked two and struck out seven in seven innings. After going 0-4 with a 6.59 ERA in April, the right-hander is 2-0 with a 0.46 ERA in May. Jimenez, who signed a four-year, $50 million contract as a free agent in February, permitted only one runner past first base. All three hits against him were singles, and on each occasion the runner was erased trying to steal. Darren ODay worked a perfect eighth, but Hunter couldnt preserve the lead. He left the mound to jeers from fans who minutes earlier were standing in anticipation of the final out. Hunter has 11 saves, but his job as closer could be in jeopardy. "Im not going to get in to handicapping, this means that and that means this," manager Buck Showalter said. "Well constantly see what gives us the best option to pitch nine innings, and be competitive and continue to be in first place. And thats what well do." Said Hunter: "Its my job today. Well see." Detroit starter Drew Smyly allowed five hits over six innings and matched a season high with seven strikeouts. In his previous three outings against the Orioles, all in relief, Smyly gave up two hits and struck out eight in eight shutout innings. Detroit trailed 1-0 in the seventh when Hunter led off with a single and Cabrera walked. After Jimenez bounced a curveball, rookie catcher Caleb Joseph quickly found the handle on the loose ball and threw out Hunter trying to take third. Martinez bounced into a 4-6-3 double play. Baltimore catchers were 4 for 29 in throwing out would-be stealers before Joseph went 3 for 4. The rookie also got his first major league hit, a fourth-inning single. NOTES: RHP Kevin Gausman will be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to start Wednesday for the Orioles. The move was designed to give starters Wei-Yin Chen and Miguel Gonzalez an extra day of rest. Gonzalez will be available in the bullpen for Wednesdays game. Baltimore also announced it optioned RHP Preston Guilmet to Norfolk after the game. Guilmet made two scoreless appearances totalling 1 2/3 innings after being recalled before Mondays game. ... Ausmus said RHP Anibal Sanchez (finger laceration) will come off the DL to start Sunday against Boston. ... Detroits Rick Porcello, who left Mondays game with a tightness in his side, remains on schedule for his next start Saturday. ... Showalter said starter Chris Tillman had some groin soreness after his start Sunday, but the right-hander appears to have recovered. On Friday in the Kraft Nabisco Championship, her putting touch carried her to the top of the leaderboard in the first major championship of the year. The 19-year-old Thompson, already a three-time winner on the tour, shot a bogey-free 8-under 64 at Mission Hills for a share of the lead with Se Ri Pak. "I worked extremely hard in the off-season on my short game and just trying to get my game a lot more consistent," Thompson said. She had only 25 putts after taking 35 in a first-round 73. "I just had a little bit of speed issues yesterday," Thompson said. "I didnt really commit to my lines and I came up short a lot. I just went out today and picked my line and sped up my tempo a little bit and went up to it and said, Im going to knock it in." After experimenting with a stance close to the ball to get her eyes more over the putting line, shes standing farther away in a more natural position. "Even as a little kid I stood far away from the ball and took the putter inside. I just went right back to that," Thompson said. "I moved farther away and just take one look at the hole and just knock it in. Hopefully." Pak birdied the final hole for a 70 to match Thompson at 7-under 137. The 36-year-old South Korean player won the last of her five major titles in 2006 and has 25 LPGA Tour victories. "Everything has just been really solid," Pak said. "I kept it fairways, greens, always the goal every hole. I had a lot of opportunities, but putting is not as good as yesterday. Still, just really smooth, solid round. Im really happy about the way I finished." Michelle Wie was a stroke back after a 71. "Im really excited," Wie said. "Its fun being near the top of the leaderboard. But try not to look forward too much. Its a long way til Sunday." Thompson birdied eight of the last 13 holes after opening with five pars. "I was just trying to stay in the moment and focus on each shot, not really think about what I was shooting," Thompson said. "I had the same confidence over every shot, just committing to my line and just being confident." She made a 20-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the par-3 17th -- her eiighth hole -- and two-putted for birdie after reaching the par-5 18th in two.dddddddddddd Thompson holed a breaking 30-foot birdie putt on the par-4 first, made a 4-footer on the par-4 third and ran in a 20-foot putt on the par-4 fourth after slashing out from under a tree in the left rough. She added an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-4 seventh and closed with a 10-footer on the par-5 ninth after hitting into the greenside bunker in two. "This is my favourite tournament of the year," Thompson said. "Its so beautiful, like really nice weather, and the fans are amazing. Im really comfortable with the golf course. I get to hit a lot of drivers, so I just aim up the right side and hit my little draw." Wie opened with a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-4 10th, and dropped a stroke on the par 13th after driving behind a tree in the right rough. She had a three-putt par on 18 -- missing a 3-footer -- after reaching the water-guarded green in two. "It felt good to start off with a birdie," Wie said. "After that, really just couldnt get anything going. ... But it felt good. Par is a good score out here." On the par-5 second, she made a 25-foot birdie putt after hitting a snap hook off the tee. Instead of going out of bounds, the ball hit a tree and ricocheted into the fairway. "It was a pretty lucky shot," Wie said. "I thought it was for sure OB." First-round leader Shanshan Feng bogeyed the final two holes for a 73 to drop into a tie for fourth with Cristie Kerr at 5 under. Kerr had a 70. Thompson, Pak and Wie played in calm morning conditions, while the breeze picked up as Feng and Kerr finished their afternoon rounds on the overcast day. "The wind kind of picked up, so it was actually tougher playing compared to yesterday," Feng said. "I think I actually did pretty well. I did make two bogeys coming in, but I was still concentrating, and it just happens. Sometimes you make good strokes and they dont fall on this course. Im still positive." Anna Nordqvist, the winner in Thailand in February and Carlsbad last week, was tied for sixth at 4 under after a 69. Stacy Lewis, the 2011 champion, had a 70 to join 16-year-old Lydia Ko and Hall of Famer Karrie Webb at 1 under. Ko and Webb, a two-time winner this year, also shot 70. Defending champion Inbee Park was even par after a 70.
